I'm running a farm at the moment while the owners on holiday. Rode to work thismorning, let the dog out of the run at the house, and he ran off down the gravel road to the milking shed to wait, as he always does. Back on the bike, riding about 40kph down to the shed, and suddenly the dog jumps out in front of me barking, barely 2m in front. Did my best to stay upright, slow down, and miss the bloody mutt but it all turned to custard.

Front wheel came out in spectacular speedy fashion, and bike dropped on the right hand side, pinning my leg under in as it slid, and dragging me along with it on the gravel. Took most of the brunt on my shoulder and face, already had a fucked shoulder and neck from being in a car rollover a while back (4 rolls!) so im pretty sore. lucky I still had the helmet on, but the visor was up so I got a facefull of gravel.

Got up again, straight away, hit the kill switch, and stood the bike up. Left it sitting there to let the oil travel back to where it should be, picked the gravel out of my eyes and mouth, and walked to the shed.

So the bikes a it banged up, broken indicators, r/h side fairing is broken around the bolts and scratched to shit, and a bent brake lever. Came out pretty well really for a 40k drop, but still fucked me right off.

Yes, the dog got a hiding.

Probably enough damage for an insurance company to write it off if you feel so inclined. Good on ya for wearing ya helmet and lucky you did so!

Still, can't say I wouldn't have partially blamed the dog. Mate used to have a mutt that chased the front wheel of any two wheeler.... dumb ass mutt.

Well done on wearing the helmet, I often go get the mail on the bike down the gravel driveway with no helmet (slowly).

Dude, I barely touched the front brake at all. I wasnt to clear about how close the dog really was when it jumped out. If you'd seen it you'd understand, a dog 2m (LITERALLY) in front of your front wheel, on gravel, at 40kph. Id like to see someone save that, it'd be a spectacle. Happened fucking fast, bloody mutt jumped onto the track out of the paddock chasing my front wheel. All i was thinking was, I REALLY dont want to kill this dog, seeing the farmer loves it and paydays on monday!!

And yes, sorry, i DO blame the dog. I guess I could have been more wary about where it was, but at 4.30am, all you see is what your headlights light up. This mutt chases the quad barking, rarks up the cows, and has on more than one occasion tried chewing on my front tyre while im milking (have learnt to park bike in view of the shed). Usually when I let it out it runs to the shed and waits, first time its jumped in front of my fuking bike when im riding. I like dogs, I have two myself, but I FUCKING HATE that dog.

Nuff said.

P.s Thanks very much for your offer bungbung, but as my bike has aftermarket indicators it would look pretty out of place. Will try get a replacement, which is pretty unlikely really so I'll probably have to get a whole set.

HEEELLLLL NO. Hell no. Im pretty darn fond of this bike, and having just replaced the engine in it I want to get the most of it. Besides, I have a mate thats a plastic welder, and another thats a painter, so I'll get my baby fixed up better than new. I was planning on a re-paint anyway (kwakas should be green, not bright orange!!).

Just searched thru my box of parts and found a spare brake lever :bleh:

Could have gone slower....

Don't get me wrong - I sympathise, and I have had to learn by doing (crashing) in the past too - but hopefully lesson learned for next time.... 40km/h in the dark on gravel when there is a dog you already know likes to chase the bike MAY have been a bit fast. Doesn't help you right now, but if filed away in the grey matter it might help you in future.

It's a dog they do things like that. Have the same happen to me everytime i take the bike to the farm, does it to the cars to but no so much of a problem. That makes it:
Your fault not the dogs.
Best thing to do is not react the dog will move. I've been trying to get the barsard at the farm for almost five years now one day he'll stuff up and that might hurt me but it will be worth it

You should have been able to stop from 40kph within 2 meters without any trouble on a ZXR250a with USD forks.

Yes, the dog got a hiding.

When I worked at (then known as) Electricorp in Twizel I saw an incident report one day for some 'lost plant'. Someone had taken a socket set or some such home for the weekend and the guys dog had run away with a piece of it. The relevant part that made me laugh read:

Cause of loss?: Dog ran away with it and probably buried it
Action taken to recover plant?: Kicked dog

But before you get up in arms ... a while later the same guy kicked his dog again but must have been careless as he finished up breaking his own leg in the process. Having had my own lab-retriever run full tilt into my leg one day I can understand how it could happen.

Bloody Tyre biters! Our farm dogs would have got run over if they wanted to try somthing like that. I don't slow down for them!
