jeeez there are some idiots selling bikes on trademe, some of you will know i was supposed to be buying a brand new vt250fg off there for cheap, well i just found out the seller had been lieing the whole time about the age of the engine, they originally said it had only done 300km, then i found out that it was actually that it had done 300km since it had been put in, and was in fact a second hand engine which god only knows how many km's it's done, they have also wound back the speedo to zero when the engine was put in, which is completely illegal, and i can't even see what the logic was in doing it since the engine WASN'T new!!! argh wasted so much time but at least i dug down deep enough to reveal this con artist! the listing id is Classified Number: 29588443 so steer clear, i know he has now changed what the ad says but the original ad said it was a brand new engine, and i think it's just to dodgy to be worth even looking at.
A VT250FG is a 1986 model I think, you really expect to find a brand new one?

I've come across this type of thing with TM,not as bad as this case but crap all the same. The bike I have now came with a warrant it shouldn't have but I put that down to the shop that issued it not the seller.
It also came with a problem I should of picked up myself and continues to give me hassles, but as I say I should have picked it up as it's a well known issue with them.
Pays to not be so keen it blinds you to the obvious. :brick:
Anybody see the XS on there now with a price of $5000 on it.
Now that guys kiding himself :weird:

I was going to bid on a '84 gsxr 400 with a rebuilt impulse motor which had only done 7000kays. I decided to go have a look which was a fair drive and was so glad I did. It turned out that it had been rebuilt sometime in the past by a previous owner (if you choose to believe) and had been in the bike for 7000kays. When I rode it it felt more like 70,000kays. Just goes to show - Try before you buy.

meh, I bought my bike damaged, as is, without trying or seeing it, and basically because I thought it felt OK... even after John said it was possible it could cost $9k in repairs.
Money spent doing it up etc, but other than that, it has been alright (touchwood) and brilliant for a learner. Cosmetically damaged, but the motor is in excellent nick.
So it is not always bad, but obviously I wouldn't recommend doing it my way, just felt that it worst came to the worst, it wasn't too big a hit in the pocket.
...argh wasted so much time but at least i dug down deep enough to reveal this con artist!Time worth spent learning a valuable lesson about TradeMe and such organisations I hope...never forget the phrase "Buyer Beware!"
I'm glad you didn't make a financial contribution to this con-mans sucker trust fund!

originally the ad said it had a 'brand new motor with only 300km' on the relist it said what it does now, i know it's stupid, but i thought well maybe possible that he got a new engine somewhere, and i actually asked the guy if it had been run in and he said no which led me to beleive i must have been brand new as it said. i was suposed to be driving the 800 odd k round trip to pick it up on friday so wasn't that lucky!

Lucky for him hes running a classified instead of an auction otherwise everybody would have seen my question "Why did the speedo get illegally wound back to zero?"

I've brought two bikes through Trade Me, and both times I got exactly what I was expecting.
I will confess though that one of the bikes belonged to the son of a friend and I knew the bike before hand.

Hmmm, when I get around to selling the CB750FC2 I guess I can advertise it as "One Nanna owner since new" and I wouldn't be lying  , as opposed to the GB thats had 9 :ride:.

Speaking of new engines in old vehicles, one of my salespeople is possibly trading a mid 80's Honda Accord at work that only 5000km ago had a brand new mid 80's engine put into it. Came off the shelf from Honda Japan.

I've bought two bikes of Trademe , sight unseen, and got what I expected and paid for.
But there's an awful lot that I wouldn't touch no matter what.
The seller is more important than the bike.

It is possible, as already mentioned (more so with cars probably) there have been a few engines that have been imported NEW from their country of manufacture...(I'm thinking of a new Fiat engine that came from Italy - still in its crate) However it does sound pretty dodgy with a 2nd hand engine and a re-wound speedo...could get you into trouble down the track?
Good luck finding what your looking for.

yeah admitedly my sr250 and even the old sj50 i used to have were both through trademe, both bought without seeing, just asked heaps of questions, both were good bikes, i guess the point i'm trying to make is ask heaps of questions and don't even assume the info in the ad is truthfull

Yeah it's been changed from the original listing. I was looking at it too but decided that it didn't sound quite right.

I sold one of my dirt bikes thru Trademe. the guy who bought it was rapt with it. He rang up a week after and said thanks. I made sure that my phone numbers where available and was more than happy for him to and other potential owners to look it over and ride it. The bike had been "on behalf" at a bike dealer previously but the dealer could not be bothered trying to get the price I wanted and only wanted me to discount it BUT still give them the cut we originally agreed on.
Trademe worked for me, but obviously sharks cruise in every ocean, you just have to be aware.

Yes there are alot of shitters for sale there on TM and even more shitters selling the crap on TM.
However I was given 3k to buy a bike. I thought I wanted another early 70s CB something. I came accross the bike I have now. The lady wanted considerable more than what I payed. As soon as she answered the phone, she carried on how broke she was and how she needed to sell the bike. I thought, oh well, don't know about this bike. So lets see how much she really wants $$$. I offered just over half of what she actually wanted for it, saying that it was all I had to spend (it was not). She said no and I said never mind, good luck and almost goodbye and she changed her mind. She even payed to get it sent up from the South Island :devil2:
Did realise that as I had only viewed a couple of pictures of the bike, it could be a total shitter :weird: and started to get a tad worried :puke:
Eventually it arrived on the back of a truck, in a crate. So rather than take it out of the crate, I started to pull it apart to inspect exactly how much of a shitter it really was. :wait:
It did not take long to confirm that yes this bike was in bloody good nick and I started to realise just how much I had ripped the seller off  However as the seller agreed to sell it at that price, I was not too grief stricken :devil2:
That was a good experience, however I have come accross plenty of bad ones including TM and I will most definitely NEVER be purchasing a ride there again.

What it on TM early last year? Imported into NZ in Dec 03 and only 12k on the clock? Looked like a damn good price at the last s/r it was at, if you got it for half that you did seriously rip her off. Lucky bastard.

Good lesson here, good on ya.
You should still be covered by the fair trading act (even though its an auction) because of misleading representation.
