must be a 5.7 Chev powered unit, don't care if it's manual or auto, but it MUST have a leather interior. Up to 15k.

PM me if you have, or know of one avail.

That...and for the fact that it's cooler to sit on in summer, and that it doesn't soak up drinks that have been spilt on it!!

They're quite economical if you don't drive them hard too often. Plenty of 4 cylinder cars drink more fuel than these.

Thats why you also have a motorbike (or two), the best of both worlds.

Like anything, it all depends on how you drive it.

My manual 6 speed 5.7L nearly stalls at 100 km/hr in 6th gear (rpm is almost below idle). It's economical, far from gutless, the exhaust note is savage + It hauls arse fully loaded with people & a trailor load of crap.

This is by far the most economical, reliable & practical V8 i've owned (& i've had shit loads).

If i wanted fuel econmony i'd go buy a really fun car like a prius or a super economical 4wd people mover, then i'd slit my wrists.

5.7L Chev powered Commodore ute. Rach wants a manual, I'm old and lazy and want an Auto. MUST have a leather interior, and my first colour choices are Hot house Green, Hyper Yellow (but with a black interior, not the baby shit yellow a lot have), Black.

If you're not in a hurry, keep an eye on the Turners Auctions website. For late model vehicles (which are often ex-lease), you can't do better.

I bought a four-year-old BF Falcon through Turners last year - got it for $8K - around half the price of the car-yards.

Online, you can watch (and bid on) auctions live, anywhere in NZ.

Trouble is, it can take time to get the right car at the right price. Mine took over six months, which was a bit extreme.

The crewcab aside from diff problems are a good thing,if Ford did a XR8 doublecab I'd be in,at least you are a diehard holden fan, unlike those who like ford when winning and now holden, then ford.

My XR6 is as thirsty or thrifty as my foot, but my 2.2 accord was as fuel hungry round town as the coon, and my work 1990 L300auto gets 350km from tank of 40-45ltrs approx.Go from Napier to Gissy and uses tank and half due to hills etc.

Don't tell anyone...but I have seriously looked at a few XR6's.

Aye! The crew cab's tray ain't really long enough for the bikes, but I do like the idea of being able to take people in it like a car! Funny about the fuel economy thing eh. I had a super charged Jag for years...loved it to bits. Drive it hard and it was the thirsty bitch from hell. But driven quietly, it was really good. I drove it from Hahei to Wellington on 1 tank of fuel last year.

Each to their own and all that...but I'll never own a van. I appreciate the security aspect, and the practicality of them, but they're a cunt to drive. Utes you can drive like cars!

Crewcab is ideal if you need extra seating,as legroom is better than most, but deck area compromised for bikes.Mate has an SS for his work and crewcab 6 for home, and his view was crewcab,if they take passengers(they have no kids)and doesn't need a trailer, can chcuk bbq and kayaks on come holiday time.We travelled in the back from Arrowtown to Wanaka return and was comfy.

Gotta larf at all the comments about fuel useage on here...you'd think a bunch of bikers would understand that the more gas you are using the more fun you are having.

Pete, if the cardigan/socks and sandals types give you ya a hard time about gas useage just telling 'em you are doing your bit for the environment by exhausting (excuse the pun) fossil fuel supplies and thus accelerating the development of alternative energy systems....right before you boil the bags.

Frankly, I couldn't give a flying fuck about fuel usage. Despite typical kiwi's moaning about the price of it, we've still got it pretty good here. And I hate not being able to overtake long trucks etc at will.

My manual AU3XR8 with open pipes and sitting above 3K revs takes me to a place that fuel consumption doesn't matter. Only beef I have is that it's too low for some of the farm land I trailer the bikes to. Thought about a 4X4 but can't do it. A stroked pursuit ute maybe... I'll admit I did look at the Commodore X8? but they do look a bit sales rep ish. One thing tho' the 220 or 250 hand built windsors were streets ahead of the competition in 2002. Just make sure she doesn't have piston slap or drink excessive amounts of oil. This was a no cost option from Holden when they were new. Ring Holden and check the rego to see if any warranty work was carried out back in the day as A LOT of VT/VX/VU 5.7s were affected. Ohh and if you wanted a real ute you wouldn't be going for one with fag boi IRS and uni body construction. Must be a poser.

I've driven a V8 pickup truck with a live rear axle and separate body and chassis. It was terrible to drive, even at 100kmh it was quite unstable and would start to wander across the road slightly. At much higher speeds it was terrible to drive. Had nice 17" rims with good tyres as well.

About 300 of them came off lease in a period of 3 months, so you probably got lucky with your timing as they were just dumping them. I wouldn't consider $8K a rule for a BF Falcon, well done on the bargain.

Probably because Holden doesn't see the need for one.

There is no practical advantage of a Turbo 6 over a V8. Any power advantage that the turbo gives is well above any practical (or legal) road speeds. Under normal driving conditions the V8 will always be out front.

Yeah, in my limited experience the people that have a hate on either Holden or Ford, own neither.

Or else they own a clapped out 20 year old model of one or the other and wank on about how it is better than the latest model of the other.

I've had both over the years from old shitters to brand spankers and they've all been pretty good.

350hp and no weight over the back wheels plus no traction control = be careful in the wet. Cops are everywhere :bleh:

hi guys,
i had a 5.7 2001 ss aussie import ute, tigger gold with bars on back, went real nice, drove great!
thurst round town, once i put headers on her she used a 1/3d less gass
and pulled 500rpms harder on 96.sold it for 16 k to dealer with 80kms was tidy with new 245s
was good stilling on 200 clicks with crf450 x2 on back! get your eye in for a moto lol!
and i never got passed bu jap cars on open road!
come to think of it,dont think and bikes passed me ether.
i had a 96 statesman 304 v8 too, wat a great grunter that was, the pull in the 5 ltr was better than the 5.7.

Contrary to popular belief I'm not a hoon on the road! And I have driven worse utes!

But thanks for your concern!

I wouldn't expect you'd be passed often sitting at 200 clicks :chase:

But holden utes are big, heavy, gutless pieces of shit... that on top burn a stupendous amount of fuel.

Not so with a Gsxr1000 vs gn250

I have never heard anyone call a 5.7L V8 gutless before. Usually that's reserved for 1.5L shopping carts. I'd like to know what your drive when you can't take the bike?

Aye. The LS1 can very easily be remapped to do 400hp. Not too shabby for a stinky old ute.

It's the weight that makes them gutless... put a 1000hp engine in a tank and all of a sudden it's pretty gutless isn't it?

All that fuel $ flying out the exhaust and what... 0- 100 in 8? Not impressive.

Sorry but the world starts and ends with $1.50 jap imports.

I gotta agree with racefactory here, clearly what you really want to use to cart around your bikes is a skyline.. you can fit a flatbed to those, right? :p

Skyline? Now you're just being ridiculous. It's that Ariel Atom that you want to fit a rear tray to :bleh:

AllanB
27th January 2011, 14:27
Have you noticed that almost every Skyline in Christchurch is driven by a pencil headed kid whose arms are obviously too weak to control the wheel and the car is generally a smacked up bucket.

A shame to see these crappers sliding around round-a-bouts bouncing off stupidly lowered suspension as they once had a great racing heritage. The only thing most of these cars can lay claim to now is using the back seats to getting a few scrubbers up the-the-duff and on the state benefit for the next 15 years.

Ford Holden, XR6 V6. When I was looking around 7 months ago I did not have a brand preference and would happily have taken a mint example of either. Just happened to end up with a XR6 as the cars price, condition etc ticked all the boxes. When replacement time comes I'd definitely get another XR6 though!

Camshaft
27th January 2011, 15:03
Probably because Holden doesn't see the need for one.

There is no practical advantage of a Turbo 6 over a V8. Any power advantage that the turbo gives is well above any practical (or legal) road speeds. Under normal driving conditions the V8 will always be out front.

just like litre sports bikes, there capabilities arent meant for the bounds of the legal realm, my father has owned both an xr8 and an xr6 turbo and infact said for the road the 6 was much quicker and more fun to drive whereas the 8 had top end power.

Excellent choice and a damn good price TBH. Always use 95/98 in it, 91 makes the knock sensors go spastic, have seen them on 91 pulling 165rwkw  compared to 180-190rwkw for decent gas. The ring wear problem to my knowledge was sorted by the end of VT2 model, and was only occurring in the manual versions, 1250rpm overtaking was too much stress :bleh:
Get some headers, exhaust, cold box and MAFless tune into it and enjoy a huge amount of grunt (and sideways)

Want to swap for a Hilux....

Aye. The LS1 can very easily be remapped to do 400hp. Not too shabby for a stinky old ute.The LS1 was detuned (made richer) to detune it it at 220Kw, from 240Kw standard, and GM Australia caved in 5kw per model year increment as something to sell.

So when was the last time you drove one? They run a low/flat 14 from factory, mid to low 13s with a MAFless tune, exhaust and cold box. They weigh barely any more than an R34 GT-R (I'm assuming, that would be the kind of comparison you are making) yet have the same power and more torque from factory.
Go away.

dam aussies!
headers make a real dif,i used factory hsv headers off trade me, 4 into 1 type, recon the work better than those silly crome after market things.

if i was to get a nother,it would have to be a manaul this time,
didnt realy think the cold box did much,as the stock box works well, unless you go maf less

Here's my ute.One owner (me) 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab 4wd auto. 5.7 (350ci) Hemi 345hp.
You can comfortably fit 4 adults, slightly less comfortably (for the 3 in the back anyway)5 adults, a bike or 2 on the back and tow a trailer full of crap and still get nearly 7 k's per liter. Unloaded it will easily get 12 k's per liter (about 9l per 100k) at 100 kph.
Put your boot in it and you can just about see the gas needle drop.
