Cary
23rd January 2011, 12:07
A good time to visit the Coromandal, Summer campers, kids & campervans have gone and the roads are ours

This is an adventure ride but road riders are more than welcome.

Will be meeting at Kopu Pub parking area at 10am on Saturday morning, and riding up thru Tapu-Coroglen Rd, 309 Rd. Lunch at Coro township then wandering up to Fletchers Bay.

Good easy ride for all.

I will be going up Friday with the ute and supplies then meeting at Kopu Saturday.

There will be a BBQ supplied for $20pp which will include bacon n eggs for brecky.

If you prefer you can bring your own and use bbq.

I will be taking the necessary refreshments, if you want anything other than Tui let me know. Will throw a couple bottles of plonk in for the ladys and DR riders.........

(TUI, $1/bottle, $1.50 if you want some of that flash foreign stuff) will bring mixers.

As I may not have my hepler this year someone will have to lead on Sundays ride as i'll be packing up and driving the ute home.

Those who sign up for ride I will assume you are going to want dinner/brecky. PM me if otherwise please.

Is the Naki anniversary weekend so maybe you guys could make a long weekend of it.

Bring a tent etc & $10 for DOC camping fee.

This looks very good Cary, if it is half as good as the one you organised in 2008 it will be a ripper!

We are very interested, will talk more with Leanne and let you know. If Leanne is on the back it is unlikely that I will do the trip over to the West Coast and back like last time.

Thank you

The Coro gravel is all easy, nothing to fear. this is more for the social ride with easy gravel and great views. (not saying the pace is slow tho :blip:)

As it's a basic route it will be ride your own pace and regroup at several places to count heads.

If you filled up in Coromandel Nic, I am sure you will be fine, you can get over 250Km to reserve right? I am sure Andy can top you up if required, he is bringing in a tanker....(you bringing the 640A mate?) :)
Leave Rotorua with a full tank, then top up Thames and then top the top up Coro, just in case.....That's about what all do, sometimes miss out the Thames bit depending on tank volume...

Leanne and I are still keen on this ride, but have to sort a few things out first before committing.

If we do it we will take the "chicken route" and just head up the East Coast of the Coromandel and not the gravel over to the west coast and back.

But we will let you know if plenty of time Cary, imagine getting up there and running short of coke for Captain Morgan Rum!

Really only one way if you want to get there quickish, head to Coro town then keep the water on your left and stop when the road does and your there  (follow signposts to Colville then Port Jackson will get you there)

Yep thats the plan think i left about 8 last time to make it back to Kopu by 10. Use the trip down to clear the gravel.......:devil2:

p.s. Not that I don't want company but if some do make it up Fri and don't want to do the return trip Sat morning the kayak and rod will be there if you wanna catch us some fish for dinner......... (or like me, attempt it!)

Are you serious?
Boy have YOU been missing out.

Well if you want to mimic the route of the ride, it's not a confusing one.
Left at Kopu, right at Tapu (tapu-coroglen road), left at the end next to the pub, up the coast till you get to the 309 road (left turn) which takes you back across to the west coast again, then head for colville from there, upwards and onwards!

Haven't been through for a while but there were some hell thunderstorms over the weekend so expect some damage. Damage from the storms a few weeks back is also still apparent in places on the main roads around here so the Motu probably still has a few missing bits & slips. All good fun.

So many things to get sorted, (moving house etc), so little time/finances.

Re that mountain bike race, does it involve any road closures?

Roads remain open - got this from the Colville Connection website :)

Parts of these rides are on public roads WHICH ARE OPEN TO TRAFFIC. Traffic should be minimal, but KEEP LEFT and under control at all times on the roads.
Spectators' vehicles on the course have the potential to be a major hazard to riders. PLEASE, NO SPECTATORS' VEHICLES ON THE COURSE.
Rubbish

Looking forward to it:woohoo:....the riding and the camp (if I must ) - not the hoards of lycra-clad mountainbikers

Can I please make a special order for a couple of bottles of coke?
I have just finished packing and just have room for a bottle of bourbon. And even better if you could manage some ice, because that means we can enjoy a few of them they way they are supposed to be.

Good weekend that

Thanks to all those that came along.

Andy for the bbq, tents, plates etc etc was great to have you and the kids along.

Thanks to Colin for taking the cooking duties on Sat to allow me to prep everything else, a great help.

Have learn't a couple of lessons for next time, fry pan for the eggs & MORE BEER!!

Sorry about the brief report but am off to Kawhia for a week now and have to unpack from the CCCC then repack for a week in Kawhia as well as pick the ute up from the repair shop.......

As to the return trip home Sunday, I stopped at the stone wharf for a fish and caught four 32+cm snapper before my(new Penn) reel decided to dissassemble and went to the bottom....... Game over but enough for dinner.

Then I thought i had a flat in the ute about 20k south of Coro town, stopped to check, no all up, yep shoulda looked closer, (but when was the last time you checked you wheel nuts?) however a k up the road my left rear wheel came off!!

I was just before a bridge so had to pull over after that, found the tyre in a stream bed, and after a lesson from Gunnyrob got on to AA straight away.

Then Andy drove up, he assessed it, went looking for parts, unbelieveably we found every last one! After a little assembly by Andy off we went(very short version).

AA got cancelled and a stop to stop a squeek it was off home.

THANK YOU MATE

Basically all the nuts came off(inc mag lock nut) The last time I took that tyre off was when I did a tyre rotation 11 000ks ago so I don't know if it was from that(!) or what happened.......

Luckily not too much was ground away but he did leave a nice long groove in the seal and over the bridge  That bloody brake drum was hot!! And geez that spring took some finding!.
Luckily Cary had spare wheel nuts. (Who the hell Cary's :) spare wheel nuts eh?)
So to recap - Wheel in the stream, brake drum on the far end of the bridge, found 2 wheel nuts 20-30 metres further up the road and a trail of small misc brake shoe retaing parts within 5 mtrs of each other and luckily all were still salvageable even the brake shoe that was ground away a little. Managed to use the Hiace jack under the towbar and raise the ute enough for Cary to get his jack under the axle and Bob was your mothers brother.
If Cary didn't have bad luck he'd have none at all. Did I mention my hourly rate??
