hi guys. sorry to bother you again.

kawasaki kdx 200 around 1990 . aftermarket pipe and reeds.

had first run on murawai beach. after 10 km , engine died.
started few times but died same minute.

engine feels hotter than it should be , same time the radiator is not as hot. there is enough of coolant ....

spark plug was badly foiled. no spark.

in dark i could see little sparks going from middle to the ceramic side :(

installed new one , started easy but the spark is not as bright as i usually see on my jetski.

i have concern the previous owner fiddled with the card as he could not start the bike because the reeds were broken.

question number one - who would you recommend to set up the carb reasonably inexpensive?
question number two - does radiator have to be same temperature as the engine while running?
question number three - how bright does spark have to be? is there aftermatket replacement of the igniter?

Q.1 one of the guy on here may be happy to help out over a few beers yah never know.
Q.2 no idea is radiator keeps engine cool by spreading the head over a greater surface area the resulting effect in (with air flow helping ) is your coolant get chilled before re entering the motor to again soak up more heat round and round it goes.
Q.3 spark should be able to jump a reasonable gap if is a healthy spark as for aftermarket bit on a kdx no idea

Q.4 what the hell you riding on the beach for you run risk of tickets etc etc and gives riders a bad name not a good thing unless you have a road legal version KDX

1. two best places to take a KDX in Auckland would be Mr motorcycles (us) in pukekohe, or Spectrum on barry's point road, however read below before you do,

2. KDX's do not really run that hot, the radiators will not get very hot so do not worry about it,

3. if you can see the spark jump, it is ok, there is not an aftermarket CDI for E model KDX's around, and would not be worth the money anyway,

what fuel are you running, and what mix? we would recommend 40:1 with a decent syntheic two stroke oil, 91 should be ok, but 95 would be better, this model KDX was known for gumming up the power valves if cheap mineral 2 stroke oil was used, we run Elf, but any well known brand name will do a full synthetic,

what spark plug is it running, KDX's tend to run best on BR9ES in my experience,

a one off foul on a new 2 stroke is not uncomman, esp if the fuel had been sitting around for a while, if it does it again, or starts doing it often, then i would start looking into it,


and as per Barty, stay off the beaches, esp when there is a lot of poeple on them, it does us all no good,

i really did not know about restriction on beaches.......
my friend was ill so we were too late for sandpit and went to the beach few km past swimmers.
there were many dirtbikes/quads by the way. :(

how much is the carb setup in your place?
running 40:1 of 91 with valvoline marine oil :)
br9es for sparkplugs
fuel is fresh

the engine was much hotter than the radiator. could not hold bare hand next to it for more than 2 seconds.

will open water pump tomorrow - see if there is impeller still alive :))))
Is there any precautions i need to know about it?

would recommend something better than marine oil, these bikes run a older school drum type power valve set up that does not like mineral oil that leaves a film around,

Marine oil is set up for a much different range of conditions,

there is not magec carb set up, and it is difficult to properly set up a carb in a workshop because you can not put the engine under load, as i said, if it keeps doing it look further,

cheap and readily available oil that has served me well for years in bikes is castrol TTS or i think they call it something 2t now.- it retails for about $85 at supercheap for 4 litres, yes i know twice the price of the valvoline marine stuff as used in superjets etc.

The predjudices you are refering to - even if all the bikes that visited the beach were road legal dual purpose etc. you can guarantee there would be indignant citizens who think there is apparently not enough beaches in NZ for everyone and they should have first rights to it rather than those "devil incarnate" bikers.

If you have the dosh, I would say take it to a shop and get it sorted out properly straight up, and use the correct 2T oil.

I had an old bike, used to do bare minimum maintenance or less, and had a few problems during rides which frustrated myself and my friends no end. Got a good bike, do (and will continue to do) the maintenance by the book and it performs right every time.
