Very cool pup you have there! I don't own a dog, living in an apartment it's hard. But I would eventually like a British Bulldog. Always found them funny as fuck.

Ya ain't seeing my 'puppies' ya perv...:o

The kids have been on to us for ages to get a puppy since losing our old faithful boy but we've resisted so far (people not being home during the day to look after it and all that...) Every time I see ads on tv though with gorgeous labby pups I feel myself weakening though. Must stay out of this thread as my will power might start evaporating when I look at others' muts, hounds and dog-babies.

... died about 12 years ago (run over by a car).
He was a fox-terrier / King Charles spaniel cross, was very friendly and good with kids, had a lovely gentle nature, and loved to chase things and to swim.
I didn't have the heart to get another dog after he died in my arms.
The kids named him - called him Didley, which was funny because shortly after we got him, one of them got a book fom the library about a gang of rascally robber dogs, whose leader was called Didley!

The 85 year old dear next door finally lost her ancient retriever yesterday and she's a bit tearful. I saw her ride off on her treadley for her afternoon constitutional as I got home, and apparently she had a wee cry on several of the neighbours on the way.

Later that evening there's a knock on the door, it's a guy, late teens. "I heard that old lady next door to you... her dog died today. I went up the road and I've collected some money for her. I don’t know her and I'm a bit embarrassed, can you give her this?” It was $150.

The daughter tried to take him next door but he got all shy. Was off to Orks on Monday, to Uni, had to go home.

Bloody women around here have been bawling all day.

I agree that you have to have the right environment. I mainly work from home and the mutt sleeps under my chair till walk time.

I wanted a dog but was worried because I work all day. My dog was going to be destroyed as she couldn't produce puppies for the breeder, so luckily I was given her for nothing (just the cost of spaying).
I saved her from certain death, and the life she led before, being in a pen all day with no love and affection was very sad.
Now she is spoilt and a loved member of the family!

I hope he does take it easy. My pup landed on a tree branch, opening up a 5in gash along her ribs. Slowed her down for at least 30 seconds.
She threw her breakfast up on my bed this morning:( so I'm a tad concerned about what she has been eating & a tad irate about my bedding. On the plus side, clean sheet night tonight. Woo Hoo:clap:

Awesome cross... call them Sibords I believe? Have 4 of them in my local dog club - all top obedience and agility dogs, and beautiful.

My trainer Karen Sadler bred a husky with a white german shepherd like mine for a TV commercial to get a wolf look a like. He is AWESOME... Old boy now, but an exceptional dog indeed. This is him below - "smiling" for camera

That is awesome! I want that!!!!

I know Karen well, used to live with her at one time in fact. One of my current dogs is bred by her, and my little grey girl was descended from her lines as well. The Sibe-Bords you are familiar with will all be related to my ratbags. You will see my little grey girl on Karen's website :)

Small world indeed. The pups and dogs I was refering to in my club were all bred by her too. Simply awesome dogs - and damn beautiful too! And she is a truely fantastic trainer. I have not been to her for the past year or so as I have been fighting to get my dogs back from the ex partner, but will be starting back with my white shepherd in her class next term at dog school. See if I can save some of the training in his head that i worked so hard on for 4 years.

I am going to stir up a hornets nest here.

I have just watched a doco about pedigree dogs (esp in england), and if there are any dog owners on here that have to have a certified blood line in their dogs i would like to impress upon you the very real need for you to realise the very great and real danger our dogs face due to inbreeding.

I will find a clip for you to watch in a minute.

Clip found part one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=3O0l0f50AAk

Feel free to explore the other 5 parts of the documentary.

We love our dogs, please don't make them suffer unnecessarily because of our vanity

@katie, I am so happy you have your white shep, and i bet he/she is the best dog in the world (just like mine). In most countries if dogs are being bred for a pedigree a white shep, or a ridgeback without a ridge (1 in 8) would be euthanised.

Arr I've rambled enough, i'll go get the clip.

edit: I say enough of inbreeding our best friends to death. If my boy was still intact he'd be a a great mate for a shepherd girl. We would probably call the offspring a 'Shuntaway' :)

(sorry i didn't mean to hijack yer thread BD, but i am passionate about this)

I enjoy the training as much as he does. It's just nice to have a dog that's under control.

Got any tips? My dog is very stubborn. She knows I am pack leader and will do what I want, but to hell with any other family members! Their problem I guess! Just as well she has a very laid back nature.

Treats.

I used to have German Shepherds and other big dogs. Back in the 80's training was all about discipline and choker chains and being hard.

The treats and rewards based ways of today are so much better and more effective.

Liver treats - nom-nom-nom

Dog really concentrates to get them.

+1 Reward the dog. Shmackos are like doggy crack too for some reason.

A good rule is to make sure that you always release your dog from a command, tell it to sit, lie down, heel etc & do not let it move until you say so. Be 100% consistent. Just remember, though, if your leaving for work, to release the dog from command, poor wee bugger could end up sitting for hours....

Ha! Looks cheeky. Retired to my scratcher last night too find one of the mesh curtains torn in half & strewn all over the bedroom. No idea how the dog managed to rip it without pulling down the curtain rail. Makes a change from decimating toilet rolls I guess.

Yeah - Police Dogs get a ball to play with briefly as their reward.

Doogle's chew toy is part of our training too - hide and seek. It's also what the retriever in him brings to me for attention.

The best bet is to find something she likes chewing better and make it readily available and encourage it. Rope chew-toys worked for us.
I still can't leave socks in my shoes though.
