http://spaceweather.com/ this posting fresh on the net from NASA.
seems we can expect CMEs -Coronal Mass Ejections to hit earth within days!
that means, goodbye to all your data stored in chips or hard drives at the least!
maybe even dramatic weather worldwide and the odd earthquake or 7 and eruptions too.

sorry was meant to be this one-http://science.nasa.gov/educators/ He is the head of deparment. this info is from his own website, check in the morning for confirmation from NASA- if your PC still works.
I just dug up this collabarative report from another source which gives background into CMEs and their effects
http://www.starstryder.com/2007/06/04/countdown-to-solar-maximum-coronal-mass-ejections/
written four years ago about these times -it outlines the effects and liklyhood of CMEs.
Anyway... no more posts from me tonight - Im off to empty my EFTPOS account and max out my credit account!

3-day Solar-Geophysical Forecast issued Jan 29 22:00 UTC
Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels with a slight chance for C-class events for the next three days (30 January - 01 February).

Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be at predominantly quiet levels for the next two days (30-31 January). Quiet to unsettled levels are expected late on day three (01 February) as a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream moves into a geoeffective position.

Meh, not just yet CW, I hope:)... Funny, just finished watching a prog on Discovery Channel on 2012 theories :)... anyhoo, i've been watching the solarcycle24 (http://www.solarcycle24.com/) site for the last few years and seen some pretty spectacular displays... but the latest has to be one of the best...

28/01/2011 (The Day before Jantars link)

"Solar Update - Numerous Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have taken place off the Suns western limb. Click HERE (http://www.solarcycle24.com/archive/jan28.mpeg) to download a LASCO movie of the events. Unfortunatly none of these explosions appear to be earth directed. Sooner or later, we will get lucky and be in the path of an incoming CME that will produce Aurora at lower latitudes for our enjoyment. One of these explosions was caused by an M1.4 Solar Flare (http://www.spaceweather.com/flareexpl.html) around departing Sunspot 1149.

A new sunspot has rotated into view on the southeastern limb and should be numbered 1150 on Friday"

I love it when they get disappointed that nothing is Earth directed ... The big ball is gettin angry, but I wish it would wait til I've had my fishing trip on Friday and my mother in law has left the country :).

The sun goes through these cycles every eleven years or so... they say scientists expect this next solar maximum to be the strongest of modern times, however they don't give any reason as to why. What makes this cycle any different from the one we have been coming out of for the last 10 years, or from the one in ‘89? or any other in the Earths 3.8 billion year history?

More scare mongering or money making scemes to say protect your self with our product??? all part of the 2012 scare mongering bull shit.

Umm, No. The next solar maximum is expected to the lowest in modern times. At least as low as the Dalton minimum, and maybe even as low as the Maunder. NASA are predicting a maximum SSN of 64 and others predictions are for a peak as low as 50.

As are all preditictions, but some have more skill than others. Solar studies are fortunately not a new branch of astrophysics, but it is one we are still learning about.

Dr Theodore Landscheit http://bourabai.narod.ru/landscheidt/ is currently the world's most eminent solar physicist, and some years ago I had the honour of being part of an open Peer review of one of his early papers. He was the first to predict the current minimum and it appears that it is likely to be named after him. He made the prediction prior to the end of the previous solar cycle, while NASA are still updating their prediction monthly.

The solar one is happening right on schedule, but the terrestial one isn't due for quite some time yet.

The earths magnetic reversals have been sparodic and inconsistant in the past. So inconsistant that it has varied from 5 times in less than a century to 42 million years between reversals. Currently it is around 750,000 years since the last reversal. The exact time or period of the next reversal cannot yet be predicted, but we do know that it will be at a time of low magnetic field strength that we aren't yet seeing.

There be "life" and water on Mars already

here's a link that sort of explains it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPLjnqS8UeY&feature=related). I couldn't find the stuff i'd read (must add bookmark ), but it was a guy from Liverpool University... anyhoo, I found it while looking for reasons behind the "recent" birds, fish and crab deaths and he was "saying" something about the magnetic field diminishing and ripping open over the equator... It was about a month ago, so I could be wrong with some of those details...

here comes another one....

copied from spaceweather.com

HIGH SOLAR ACTIVITY: Solar Cycle 24 is heating up. No fewer than three sunspots (1164, 1165, and 1166) are crackling with M-class solar flares, and each of them has a delta-class magnetic field capable of producing even more powerful X-flares. Scroll past the double flybys for information about a CME now heading our way...

INCOMING CME: The magnetic canopy of sunspot 1166 erupted on March 7th around 1400 UT, producing an M2-class solar flare and a bright coronal mass ejection (CME). Click on the image to launch a movie of the expanding plasma cloud:

The CME was not squarely directed at Earth. Nevertheless, the cloud will probably deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field on March 9th or 10th, possibly sparking polar geomagnetic storms. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

I've been watching the solar flux over the last few days... Anyhoo, from www.solarcycle24.com (http://www.solarcycle24.com/)

M1.5 Flare / No Sunspots Needed: An M1.5 Solar Flare took place at 03:58 UTC Tuesday and was centered around the spotless plage region located in the south eastern quadrant of the visible solar disk.

M-Class Flares and two CME's - Several M-Class flares took place on Monday around Sunspots 1164, 1165 and 1166. Two Coronal Mass Ejections (CME's) did take place however both do not appear to be fully earth directed. These expanding clouds could deliver a minor blow to earths geomagnetic field within the next 72 hours. The largest flare thus far was an M3.7 which took place at 20:12 UTC Monday.

Solar Update - As reported above, several M-Class flares (7) took place during the day on Monday. Sunspot 1165 which is located in the southern hemisphere is in the process of rotating onto the western limb and will soon be out of direct earth view. Sunspot 1164 which is in the northern hemisphere will also rotate onto the western limb soon after 1165. The chances for strong solar flares will decrease somewhat once these regions are out of view, however there will remain the possibility for further flares around Sunspot 1166. Just to the east of 1166, Sunspot 1169 did show some minor growth during the day on Monday.

Solar Flux Update: Not to sound like a broken record, but the Solar Flux reading on Monday is 153 (No pun intended). This is yet again another high for Cycle 24. The last time the solar flux was as this level, was July of 2004. Please note that this flux reading is an estimate due to the Flare activity in progress The high-sensitivity channels on the measurement device were completely overloaded by the long duration flare and produced a SFI reading of 938.6 at 20:00z.
