ok simple. I want to do a simple thing here.
how long have you been riding.
how many crashes have you had.
im doing an average count so please dont take over the thread with stuff I have to sift through.

Ideally: started riding at 25. now 45. had 3 crashes.
something like that because of course age has much to do with it

Im being lenient on the term crash:
anything that does does damage to yourself or your bike or gear while in motion.

Ideal post (and mine:)
I started riding when I was 21, im now 22, ive had 1 crash (5.5 months)
that aint counting the engine seizure of mine because i didnt 'crash' as-per-say

if you dont want to post, then dont, thats fine

lost count after the first big 3 or 4 thats when I was 16 ...then Nope Ive lost count ..to many years as a dispach rider ..I can remember the bigger ones and the funny ones ....going over the handlebars on a Maluguti ( sp) in greece ... or dragging everything on the deck ..pegs knees ..seeing a snowman in the road and deciding ..while still cranked over to go through it ..... it had frozen to Ice ,,,
Sliding under a lorry , on a CX500 , picked me self up ..looked down ,,red stuff everywhere ,,,sat down thinking I might need attention ..only to remember I had a bottle of wine ....in me bag...

Do I count MX crashes ???

Slowed down a bit in me old age ...now I just perform the odd hand stand after the 20 foot Table at our local track ...

Started riding when 15, now 57. Had 14 years away from bikes in the middle.

4 road crashes, all at low speed.

1 drag bike crash at over 120 mph (when I was young and could bounce without breaking stuff)

Started riding when I was 16, now 46. Had three low speed low sides (twice on black ice, and once on the dreaded painted manhole cover in the wet), and one crash when I was hit by a car on the motorway.

Not too bad for 30 years, but I would have preferred to have avoided the pain of the last one.

I've been riding 35 years and don't really know how many prangs I've had, they were all in the early days mainly - but we could round it out metric and say 10 - but it's possibly more than that, and that's not with all the low speed ones,I've dumped plenty of times at low speed, doing donuts and fast U turns, falling in gravel etc. Also uncoutable off road prangs - some of these were far more radical than just falling over on the road, and personaly I'd rather take out some of the road prangs and put in the dirt ones as being far more impressive.

I've had some really close calls, learned more lessons from nearly having a big one than having a small one...

Started riding at fifteen, off twice on ice, once mud. Not even a broken fingernail. Did break a mirror though. Did few years road racing in the 60s, again without accident. Now 65 so may be pushing my luck a bit posting this.

ok simple. I want to do a simple thing here.
Too simple. You'll end up with meaningless stats.

What's a 'crash'? Does that include off-road crashes? Does it include falling over while stationary? How significant an 'incident' does it have to be to be called a crash - injury vs. non-injury?

F'rinstance - I started riding at 15ish. I had numerous 'incidents' in the first year or so, of which two would count as crashes. Then I learned stuff.

I am now somewhere in the vicinity of 103. I had no crashes between the ages of 17 and four years ago, but when I started commuting in D'Auckland, I had four crashes on one bike, solely because it was jinxed and/or lazy, and because D'Auckland drivers are feckin eejits. All were other people's fault, apart from the "lowside on a squashed softdrink can while tipping in to the corner" incident. However, all were preventable. I'd un-learned stuff??

I fell off my next bike onto my head, but dunno that I'd count that as a crash, as the bike had more or less stopped moving (locked up front wheel) when that happened. There was little damage to the bike or myself. The mild concussion I got after the accident probably caused the brain fade that caused the accident. I can't think of any other possible reason for it.

I started riding at 15, then have had more crashes than I can remember (seriously). I'd say, I must have had at least 10 high speed ones or somewhere around there. It's been less than a decade since I started riding.

results so far

using my wacky maths and stuff. on AVERAGE. excluding the random posts and unclear posts.
the each person (on AVERAGE (caps for EMPHASIS)) has a crash every 5.755882 years

but also. you have riders who go 39 years without a crash. and some who go 1 year with 6 crashes.

also i havent put in the ages thing yet

Started riding when I was 13. Now I'm 15 and I've lost count of the amount of cashes I've done. On the motocross track I come off about 5 times each ride just from going to hard and losing traction. I've only had like 15 crashes on the dirt that were potentially bone/neck breaking though. I've only had 4 crashes on the road bike, last one was a doozy

yes indeedy it is
Im gonna say off by 1 year or so, purely due to the incostencies. IE. my source data is only from people who posted. there proberly is alot of people who didnt post who have never crashed or have crashed so many times that they didnt want to post. also some people might not include the 5k drops and some did.
I had 24 sources. avg riding years was 16.28 years avg amount of crashes was 2.8 (im rounding cos i left the data at work)
therefore. every 16.28 years there is 2.8 crashes
1x2.8 = 2.8
2.8 / 2.8 = 1
16.28 / 2.8 = 5.6
1 crash every 5.6 years

im proberly out a decimal or two cos im basing that entirely on my memory... which is shocking

edit. I was only counting road crashes as best I could. and I did count low speed incidents where they were available

Yeah you probably want to look at the SD though to see if the number actually means anything. I doubt it is significant to a decimal place.

Also, it wuld have been good to have a "Years since last crash" value, because I think I see a pattern of several crashs in the early years of riding, (presumably, this is an experience, lack of road craft/defensiveness thing) then settling down to a relatively crash free life for quite long periods. With an occasional "once in 10 years" sort of crash, which is probably just down to the fickle hand of fate

if I had good enuf info I would have a timeline of the riders and the amount of crashes. but its pretty well know fact that riders will crash more in the first 5 years than the second 30 years. well. actually I made that up. but it sounds cool. as someone had as their sig a while back %87.53 of statistics are made up

I started riding in December 1970. Crashes as defined by injury and/or damage, but not counting any while racing or off road.

May 1971. July 1972. December 1974. July 1976. June 1980.

So 4 crashes that count in 34.5 years of riding.

OK mine's going to be a puck to work out.

In 1990 brought a 1980 GSX250 while in Backpacking in US. Rode it for less than 1month before dropping it on the 401 freeway in Toronto Canada.
When I return to NZ I got my Learners MC licience (1991) but did not get a bike.
Around 1996 got a GSXR250 for the wife (who had the full licience). Got the odd bit of riding in, but spent more time on that bike as the "Bike Bitch".
1999: I rode the GSXR250 from our place in Albany to Whangarei (she was in the "cage" pulling the Horse float). Started my nursing training in July that year adn used the GSXR as my student vehicle. Had my next bike accident later that year, but mangaed to get the bike repaired this time (got to love insurance).
November 2001: got rid of the Wife but keeped the bike. Took the 250 on my first SI Bike tour.
2002: Bike now my only form of transport. Get full licience and later that year trade-up to the VFR750.
Feb 2004: Last Bike accident I've had. I was loading the VFR on to the ute by riding it up a homemade ramp. Had not sercured the ramp well enough, and had the expected results because of this. brought "Roxanne" the CBR1000F with the insurance pay-out.
So far I have had no more Bike related accidents, but I can not say that this has been without the odd near-but-quite-accident happening.
Would be hard for me to work-out how many riding-hours I have had now or how many K's (done 15000miles in 1year on "Roxanne" alone) which would probably give you some really good bike accident stats.

Sorry.
Short version. Start riding @ 27 but for less than 1mounth had 1 accident during that time.

Start riding again @ 33. Had my next bike accident @ 36. Last Bike accident I've had @ 41.

I am now 42 and counting.

So a ruff guess I've done about 10yrs on a bike now and had 3 accidents, but no major injuries.

Started riding on the road when I was 12, now 27, 15years and no crashes. There are bonus's to living on a farm with all those country roads at your doorstep. Many, many crashes in the dirt.
Learning to ride in the dirt before riding on the road teaches so many skills. Look at how many leading superbike riders over the years have come from a motox history.
I've got a 4yr old boy that rides a QR50 and races motox....start them young. He'll be driving in less than a year....Subaru in Lo-Ratio....it'll be a while before he hits the road.

I started riding at 36, now 43. No road crashes - fell over with bike a couple of times when learning (forgot to put a foot down - duh!), but nothing at a speed higher than 5kph!

On dual purpose bikes I've had two minor offs - one when not giving the bike enough revs as I pulled away from the kerb fully laden, and the other in Black Forest Station - standing on the pegs to negotiate a really rocky section and the front wheel hit a larger rock on an angle and over I went. Scratched the plastic on the bike and I'm still having trouble with my elbow five years later.
