View Full Version : '75 Honda XL125 vs Yamaha AG100?

I'm looking at an old XL100 with an SL125 barrel on it. Looks a bit rough but seems mechanically sound. I want it for a bit of fun and to get my licence on. It will mostly see road use and the off-road abilities aren't important to me. Love the 70's styling.
Now, I see a tidier AG100 for similar money ($700-800). Of course, there's 2 stroke vs 4 stroke but I wonder how well the AG might go on the road compared to the XL? What is the gearing like with that extra-low first gear. Any opinions?
Thanks in anticipation, Bruce

The XL wins for style points.

Yep, I'm thinking the same thing. I don't think the AG will do the same thing for my sorry Steve McQueen fantasy.

Make sure you get an open face helmet and some flying goggles.

Sounds like a article from a Two Wheels from the 70's.................
I have got one here with a test of the "New" TY250a (just like I own)
I will have a look in my old mags and see what they said in the day
As much as I like my Yamaha 2T's and a AG100 is a reliable farm bike and will go forever I would still go with the Honda

Hey Bruce
I think Fred Dagg would have had an AG100. But then, I'm not from up your way.

Thanks guys...the Honda has the votes. Itsnotarace; you might tell from my handle that I don't mind a bit of Fredd Dagg...but he's not a motorcycle hero of mine...even up here

Yeah, I'm an AG fancier from way back, but the 100cc edition is puuuuurty slow. The 175cc version, on the other hand.... is also quite gutless. Get the XL.

Get an open faced helmet with no peak, a red, purple and pink ski jacket and a pair of yellow plastic leggings.
Very stylish...

Hey that was me in 1976 - but on an XL175. The helmet was yellow and it started out with a peak - my flatmate loaned it to his mate that was the last I saw of it

FFS buy a modern cheapie. You wanna ride or fix the bugga. Get your license then get a project bike. You wanna be fixing the bugga on the southern motorway in the rain.....it always rains in Auckland.
