If you had a spare 5k floating around and you wanted to spend it on a bike what would you get?

Post it with a trademe link if possible..... ;-)

For the purpose of my own personal interest, choose any style of bike - but it must be a road registered (or be able to) bike, no dirt only bikes.

Its interesting whats available atm

If I was looking for an only bike .. then this ... GSX1200

Good all-rounder - long distance, short distance, carry gear etc etc ..

there's a shit load of Firestorm 1000's and an occasional TL1000 out there for that $$, but I'd be in for an Aprilia RS250, an NC30, or a tidy SV650.

On the bigger bikes, there's an 05 Bird for sale for $3500 (auction) at the moment, and plenty of 12/1300cc big bore nakeds for around $5k. A '99 Cb1300 for $4500 is a pretty good deal!

From the current TM crop my pick would be this one.

One day it will be worth 10 times that amount.

I'd consider this myself if I was fortunate enough to be in a position to own more than one bike.

You could always get my GSX1200, it is a bloody awesome bike. I've decided to replace it with two bikes, a full-dress tourer and something small for commuting, but if I could only run one bike I would keep the GSX.

I could probably get you my old superbike for that money. Haldanes built, Mr Clee's Dyno says it's got 182 ponies at the rear tread and more torque than a train.

Swanky suspension front and rear, both just been rebuilt.

Fuckin MEAN street fighter for someone with nads the size of watermelons! Or get some road fairings, or race it.

For that kind of money, I have to say that the VTR's are great value with no more aftermarket mods really required. It does everything quite competently (except its fuel consumption is not that great - but worth it). It will take you on the track, the back roads, touring (although that gets a little tiring for me).

It also has a great grin factor. The Honda reliability is there and servicing is relatively cheap. It also doens't look old, which is more than you can say for a lot of bikes that price.

Fuck no, it's a race bike man! It's been thrashed it's whole life, but I bet you wont find a road motor that's in any better nick. Things been stripped and serviced more times than most K6's have had tyres!

GSXR600 SRAD, 750 would be better, but I couldn't find one.
If $5000 is your budget, these are the shit, absolutely bullet-proof and pretty good all round for there day. They even crash very well.

Exactly what I have now - VFR 94-97. Still pretty quick especially out of corners with Ducs, lots of mid range, tours; drop the front 10mm for razor handling, cheap to run for what it gives back AND those gear driven cams never cease to spine tingle.

A real nice Blackbird is worth a little over $10k perhaps? I suspect the cost of fairings mainly wrote it off (top, both sides I think, thats several grand right there). Remembering also, they've been discontinued.
