Since Big Dave has started a Dog Thread, I think we should have a Cat Thread as well, yes? For those not caninely inclined y'know...
Here ya go. Mog No 1. Known as Peckitty Penekitty - which is a corruption of Princess Penelope. She got me - I didn't get her. She took over my flat about ten years ago and has stayed with me ever since.

We had three elderly cats until recently. We're down to two now; the female we had to have put down (illness) was a complete whore. Even the kids used to call her a slut! She too loved men and would embarrass us completely by being all over male visitors like a rash. Tbh, she was quite an affectionate girl but men in particular seemed to attract her attention.
This same cat would sit on the back of the sofa and "groom" me by taking mouthfuls of my hair and dragging her teeth through it!
Will put up a piccy of her when im at my laptop.

A cat thread? Cool.
I was trying to sleep one night in a hotel in Chengdu, China. However, a couple of cats meowed all night somewhere behind my room and I had a hell of a night.
The next morning I got up and walked around the back of the hotel and found a restaraunt for brekky. Kitten was on the menu so I had a fresh one on my table within 20 minutes.
Yummy! Tastes a bit like rabbit and a bit like chicken (white meat)
I slept quite well the next night
true story probably clouded by the constant retelling........
Of course, if anyone ate my cat I'd kill em!

I'm a cat rescuer - on monday I was following a car when I saw a kitten drop down and tumble onto the road,it must have climbed up into the engine bay to sleep. It rolled, got up and ran to the otherside of the road,so I picked it up and took it to my daughter, she does kitten fostering for the SPCA.All limbs, claws and teeth seemed to be working, but there was a bit of blood on it's nose. She was due to take her kittens back,so took this one too....it was feral, but only about 6 weeks old, hopefully some fostering care will turn it around.
Dusty turned up just before Xmas in 2009...she was known to us as she lived 2 doors up.They moved, but dusty didn't,and has been a good friend of mine since. Her favourite place is on my computer desk, like right now...she can sit right in front of me and get all my attention.
The next guy turned up late last year, about a year old tom cat...and I suspect in similar circumstances, his family moved.People don't moved far in a small town of rental accommodation, and cats return home.He fell in love with Dusty, and wants to be where ever she is...and she seems to tolerate him to within a metre. He was also desperate for human attention....so I did the humane thing and had him neutered. If she is Dusty, then he is smokey...so he's called Smokey Joe.The wildness seems to have gone in the few months he's been taken in,he has filled out and looking real healthy.
Being an ex tom,he's a tough guy and full of muscle...he's not soft and floppy like most cats.He has a good tactic for dealing with tom cats - he stands tall and gets really into their face, nose to nose.To take a swipe at him they have to move back, then it's all over.He used to be covered in scars...now he never loses.230968230969

i really like cats but that urge needs to be resisted
cats are viscous killers and for the sake of our natives; we need to kill them all
if i was pretensident, i'd hand out free 22's to deal to them with

Lost Kaless (fixed) to moving him. He had moved well in the past, but at ten he was stuck in his ways. He didn't get on with the other cats in that house and went bush never to be seen again. Now I will have no pets until I can prove to myself that I can give them a stable home (still renting). I get annoyed with people that get kittens & pups but dump them when they get older:angry: I am strongly for fixing all dogs and cats that are not for breeding as I have seen too many unwanted pets. Also, as much as I like cats (many a wild kitten became my family's pet when I was a kid), wild cats are hell on native birds. Tom Cats are the worst, Lost Slyvester (fixed) to a wild Tom. So on the family farm unmarked Toms, unless know to be a Neighbour's pet. are assumed to be wild and are shot if they stick around hassling the fixed farm cats. It's a dirty job I hate doing, so please fix ya cats and look after them..

Neuter and release works to keep stray cat population stable.I have a trap, and get them neutered on various schemes.Don't release near native bush of course.Sparrows are expendable....so are mice and rats.

the only thing my cat has ever attacked is me (introduced pom), a few mice (introduced origin unclear) and a 30kg German Shorthaired Pointer (introduced German).
humans have wiped out the moa, practically the kiwi and god knows how many other species, only to have us try and solve the problem with 1080 and do more harm than good...
If you want to go after anything with a 22 there's a few politicians around doing a lot more harm than our wee mates :)

In our capitalist culture, I propose an economic solution: cat meat for export alongside fur and the same for stoats, weasels and dogs.

I listened to a guy last year, on radio, who had done a study of cats and natives. He reckoned that cats stuck to rats and mice and that his local native bird population was better with cats than without. His thinking was that the rats (especially) and mice did more harm to native birds than the cats.
He was talking domestic cats - not feral cats BTW.

I lived next to native bush for years, and had a ginger cat who was a prolific hunter.Every morning the deck would be littered with rat parts.sometimes he came home with rabbits or ducklings....but never saw him with a native bird.

..but never saw him with a native bird. When I was a teen, "Inspector" was my "Gun Cat". She would come out Rabbit Hunting with me & pointed (yep like a hunting dog) the bunnies for me. She came back with a Fern Bird one day. A quite rear native bird, so I know pet cats do hunt native birds. Most of the cats I have had, have waited under the Japanese Cherry Tree hoping a drunk Tui will drop down & have tried to catch Fantails (they tended too be good a flyers for most pet cats). Don't be fool by ya Moggy, they can hunt well. Ya dogs aren't so innerscent ether. Don't let them wander unsupervised near farms or bush, especially at night. Dogs can find Kiwi very tasty & Farmers can shot dogs wandering on their Farms if they expect the dog has been worrying stock.

Our two Burmese.
Loads of character. These two aren;t really the best of mates, but they tolerate each other. Just lately one of them has started bringing rats into the house and eating, or leaving them part eaten in one particular spot in the spare upstairs bedroom. last saturday brought in a live one and left me to catch the bloody thing:facepalm:231041

Meet Meow Meow (i know, but kids named her)
http://www.majestic-quartz.com/images/meow-send.jpg
She gets mice, rabbits and rats, she once left us a line up of 5 rats on the lawn one morning!
She used to get birds, but realized that we did not like that, so now she just gets a bird if we piss her off...we don't piss her off often! Apparently, the amount of rats they kill and in essence birds eggs they save doing this more than off sets the birds they kill. Just something I read somewhere, not sure how factual it was.
We never meant to get a cat as we live in a totara forest, but she came at a time of great sorrow to us and my wife took it as a sign.

Here's Saffy the cat.
Now she is a lucky cat. Just before Christmas she went missing - turned up 2 days later looking very sorry for herself. She had a discolated rear lega nd a broken pelvis. $700 later, 4 weeks in a cage plus $170 on boarding at the vets when we went on holiday mid January and she is significantly better. Walks with a bit of a limp as I suspect the pelvis has set a bit wonky.
Consequently she did not get a christmas pressy under the tree! I got bugger all too as we were skint after that!

The recently deceased Baldrick. Found in a drain with the rest of the litter by my daughter when he was aged about 4 weeks. Cared for by the local cat lady until he was old enough to survive on the understanding that we keep him. Kept us amused for 13 odd years with his antics like trying to jump on the stereo ... and missing, trying to make a quick getaway through the cat door ... and missing. You get the picture? Not the most coordinated cat ever (although he could balance a can on his head quite well.).

This is what they do all of the day and all of the night - sit at the top of the drive and monitor traffic.Any cat that comes onto our property has to come up the drive - ''Wot chu want bro?''
This is as close as she lets him get.The grey cat is just over a year old,and desperate for her company,he follows her everywhere.Any closer and she snarls at him,but they do touch noses sometimes. He must have been looking for a mum,she isn't looking for a dependent...but she tolerates him better than I thought she would.

I present to you, Rocky!
He's a bit of a dick, but I love him all the same. He is extremely attached to a) my motorcycle and b) my motorcycle luggage. If he sees me putting on my jacket he'll usually hop on my bike and into my luggage to come along for the ride. I've taken him for a few rides but I'm just too paranoid to go any further than around the block, I don't want him to fall out or smell something and make a running leap into a billion barrel rolls.
The first pic is him sheepishly climbing out after I caught him in the act and scolded him to get out. Sorry for the iPhone pics...
