....my wife's cbx550 has recently developed a fucking annoying habit of starting ok...running for a few minutes and stopping dead...then wont start again... has been known to start after a short wait...she has had a moment on the highway where it stopped while riding , then fired up again, before coming to a stop...vacuum, fuel blockage, ????...electrical??....where to start looking??...

If bike has a Prime position on the fuel tap - select that. If the stopping after a few minutes problem goes away, there's your answer.
The vacuum hose is not working (well).
Whatever it is, I'm thinking you're describing a fuel problem

...the tap has..on..reserve...off. Wouldn't drain thru till we sucked on the vacuum hose ...draining now no problem...recently had diaphragms out to check carbs...ran well enough after the carb check...problem only came about long miles after that... dont have vacuum gauges...suppose its time to get some...

my CBX had the pulsar coil die in it & it stopped dead when hot, just thought if the petrol is a dead end.

I had a similar problem on mine when I knocked the vacuum hose off with my thumb while turning the fuel tap. The bike started fine but died about 5 minutes later. I reconnected it and sat on the side of the motorway for about 30minutes until it would start again. All was good after that.

Ride it until it stops - turn fuel off. Check float bowl for gas... If you dont turn it off and there is fuel it could be some crud floating over the outlet.

...after getting the fuel to flow freely when draining tank, I buggered off for a minute and it had stopped...gave the vacuum hose a suck, got it flowing again...stopped a few minutes later...now the fuel tap is minus the diaphragm ...found two o-rings that worked fine either side of the ex-diaphragm plate...all back together and seems to be working fine...she just has to remember to turn the tap off when its not being ridden...when searching for info on net for this vacuum type tap, discovered that reversing the diaphragm so as to disable it was a common fix for a fuel starving trait on the NC30...thanks for input...

If you're intereseted World's End Motorcycles (wemoto) in the UK sells a fair few parts for the CBX550. I've bought a few things from them now and found them to be relatively cheap (compared to NZ prices when I can get the part) and reliable - delivery to NZ is only about five working days.
They have a fuel tap repair kit that might be what you need:
