I was commuting to work on the Guzzi last week (can't remember what day). Take the usual Kelburn turn off the motorway (before the tunnel).. when I heard the Guzzi start making a harsh rattley noise as I stopped at the lights...Looked down at LHS cylinder and then RHS cylinder...nothing amiss..few revs at the lights..still a bloosy nasty arse rattle...
Hmm,..somethings gone inside the cases.
Anyway, take off quietly onto the Terrace, and enter Boulcott Street, still rattley...
THEN,..as I slow down I smell 2 stroke smoke.....
 ..a bloody noisy 1960's Vespa was following right up my backside and that was the "extra noise"....
How did I not see him..

I had a similar experience on the GS500 whilst riding past the hospital. I wondered what on earth was wrong with the bike, until I realised that the rescue helicopter was landing!

I've had a very similar moment on my VFR400R - turned out someone was letting off fireworks!

I heard a weird sound yesterday sounded like a weird banging, but I figured out it was the bike in front of me backfiring, the pipes were pointed down and the noise was echoing off the road.
Had me a little bit worried too for a while.
As for the scooter - scary that it was so up your bum that you couldn't see it! You would have felt it though if you stopped suddenly.

On Boxing day coming back from dropping people off at Christchurch airport, the cage started wobbling something chronic - "shit, a front tyre's gone" methinks. Nope, earthquake

happened to me a few years ago, stopped at the lights during a toy run, couldnt work out what the racket was until i realised there was a ducati behind me
