Seems like there are pratts on both sides of that story. A few wankers are pissing Phipps off and he in turn is pissing off everybody (regardless of if they are good intentioned or not). This is not going to end well is my prediction.

Thanks for that. i was just thinking about ringing DOC to get the access code, I went up there last summer, and am just starting to think about a route for a trip south at the end of the month. I didn't realise DOC had pulled out of controlling the Access. It's a pity a few ruin things for the majority, and that there are so many gray areas about access to places like this.

I've had an encounter with Ted Phipps on my way to Lake Sumner and had to work hard to pacify the situation, he is renown to have a bit of a hot head but I don't blame him one bit. I have seen first hand what idiots do up there and all the bollocks he has to put up with, there is vandalism, theft, gates left open, people venturing off the tracks and ripping up land, rubbish and beer bottles left everywhere, even a burnt down hut. Like he said it is only 2% of the people that cause trouble, but the trouble they cause is significant. I love that area, have done many trips up there riding, fishing and hunting, it would be a massive shame to loose it permanently but as long as those 2% of vandals, thieves and idiots are out there, it jeopardises land access for genuine people like us.
Hopefully a more thorough access management system can be put in place to:
a) let genuine people in to enjoy the area
b) discover the thieves and vandals and prosecute the hell out of those pieces of shit

There have always been problems up there, I remember many years ago staying at the lake taylor hut before some dickhead burnt it down, and hiding from the rain at the no 4(?) hut on a tramping trip before some dickhead burnt that down too.
There are the same issues with people deviating from the track and ripping the place up from lake taylor to loch katrine, there are mumblings occasionally about limiting access there too.
Hopefully it will sort itself out......

Ted Phipps was a musterer in this area years ago and you can be sure that this leopard isn't going to change his spots!

He is difficult even to family, I used to hang out with Anna Phipps, daughter of Morris Phipps and although they are all family they all reckoned he was strange.
Didn't make it any easier to gain access for MTB, motorbike, shooting or 4x4.

Seems like the "silent" landowning partner needs to have a word in his ear. Might get the same response we all get!
Can't blame him for being a bit pissy about it all though. I'm sure if he was a bit more approachable and encouraged the good eggs to make contact the bad eggs would become obvious pretty quickly.

I've found Tedd approachable, (he was pretty good towards locals) even when Doc locked the gate still I got the combie off him & that includes xing the river all I had to do was ring & leave a msg that I was coming & if the river was to high to cross he let me know
but he hated those that went off track or left gates open, shot his stock etc... & he has put up with it for a long time, & his grandson was killed a few years ago since then hes been fairly grumpy

Does this make you a good egg  I hear your point in that he has reason to be grumpy. No denying that.

I did two tracks over the weekend, one of them was Lake Sumner to head up for a fish and camp up. I rang Ted Phipps to get permission and to see what the access cost was. He was fine till I mentioned I was on a motorbike, he said he'd had enough of people on motorbikes sneaking onto his land, cutting fences, leaving gates open so stock has to be re-herded, ripping up paddocks and leaving rubbish everywhere. To be fair, if it was my land I'd have the same viewpoint, that’s just rude inconsiderate bollocks. But, after I explained I am an adventure rider, just there to enjoy the place, have a fish, will stick to the track and wouldn't do any of that crap he was very accommodating. It is normally $40 for a 4X4 so we agreed on $20 for a bike. I dropped in to see him and dropped off the $20 plus a few beers and like most farmers you show respect to, he was very friendly, welcoming, and just a genuinely nice bloke.
I always make a point of contacting farmers and hooking them up with a few beers, makes a world of difference then next time you want to go for a ride in that area, plus they are more forthcoming about info of other places and give you contact details
Ted Phipps, a nice guy in my book, just understandably had a guts full of inconsiderate vandalizing pricks...

We have done the same thing over the years in the four wheeling circles, you turn into a human rather than a dirt biker or 4x4 hoon, fresh hot bread/the days newspaper/bottle of grog always opens gates again and again.
Shame that a few fucktards spoil it for the main.
