Man those Japanese bikes just fail to bits don't they. Especially when squashed between two 1500+kg objects.

Now to wait for people to start debating whether the rider should have been where he was, not splitting, not leaving an escape path, not checking his mirrors enough, wearing jeans, what sort of jeans are they, do they have armour, whether they would've smashed the driver. Can't wait.

Ouch.

I'd be tempted to bend down and look under the car, saying (pick a random name) Sarah? Sarah?

But that would be nasty and unjustified.

Interesting to read his thread. The first reaction of many is to lawyer up. Makes you think that no matter how screwed up we think it is, our system seems to have its good points.

Shall I play the part of Katman this time? Yeah lets spoil his thunder...

"(Evil Dr Evil Laugh) What a moron it was clearly his fault. All his kids will be cursed with a great curse now because he didn't keep an eye on his mirrors.

...If he was riding a Katana it wouldn't even had got a scratch on it... etc. etc."

But seriously - I had the same thing happen to me years and years ago - fortunately mine was just a broken tail light, but the fright I got keeps me checking my mirrors every time I stop anywhere where a car rear end me. So yes, totally avoidable.

That guy was lucky, the one that almost got me hit the car I was behind kept accelerating after they hit, I was lucky I had a space to go to.
But I was dazzled by my own high vis vest in the mirrors for a second or two before spotting the car.

You know those conversations you have with people who don't ride and give advice on what they would do in a crash?
This is it!!!

I quite like the look of my pack rack, dunno why, just looks functional or something.

So I used to just leave it on all the time.

Then I saw something like this, and I wondered if that was so smart.

So now, when I'm not carrying my pack, the large bar is off and the little grab rail is in place instead.

7th February 2011, 19:41
:gob: Firstly, this video is pretty frickin amazing!!

Secondly, is there anyone who actually thinks the rider could have prevented this from happening eg watching their mirrors and using a preplanned escape route? I know that in the short time this happened, I'd still be looking at the back of the vehicle in front. I normally do worry about this sort of accident at intersections and AFTER stopping I check my mirrors and get ready to hightail it outta there until the vehicle behind me has stopped.

Not having a go at anyone - just thought the rider was amazingly lucky to not get mashed

Woah, I have taken to flashing my brake lights 3 or 4 times when I see cars coming up behind me at lights. Might not necessarily save me or my bike completely but helps remind me to keep an eye out behind (since I don't see too good out my one brown eye) while stationary.

Is a good idea, with the compulsory headlights now drivers are possibly less likely to notice the brake lights over the running (park) lights. My uncle has disconnected his rear running lights to make the brake ones stand out more, not too sure how he gets on at night though.

Lucky the old lady didn't get smashed  silly old woman.

davebullet
7th February 2011, 20:41
He could have slowed down slower. Lady driver might have caught his brake lights (would have been on longer) and also if you slam on the anchors quickly, the driver behind may not perceive how quickly they are stopping so don't brake hard enough.

Having said that he was stationary for a while and looking into the sun? Maybe she just wasn't paying attention.

Haha.... there ya go :scooter: So it was his fault as he shouldn't have stopped so quickly? Irrespective of how fast you stop, the person following has the duty to follow at a safe distance with enough space to stop if they have to. I don't think even insurance companies can try to argue this to get out of paying. As for the woman not paying attention...

Woah, I have taken to flashing my brake lights 3 or 4 times when I see cars coming up behind me at lights.

I read in a thread a while back that when braking to give a couple of blips first this wakes up the following road users to the fact you are braking.

I also love my hazards. when it all slows on the motorway flick those on and 50/50 vision front and rear (I don't like charging into lane splitting until I've figured out what is going on)

This is true, but I don't know how it'd be otherwise disputed... "He just suddenly jammed his bike in reverse and smashed into my stationary vehicle! Honest!!" :innocent:

Video would be good for other "incidents" though

Ok, so obviously the driver behind is at fault... and that's one screwed bike.

However, to keep himself safe, he obviously wasn't looking beyond the vehicle in front of him, planning the behaviour of traffic and adjusting his riding to compensate. As it was, he didn't stop very short of the vehicle in front.

If he had seen the traffic ahead, he could have slowed down sooner, or changed lanes (I hate being stuck in a slow/stopped lane, when others around are clear).

Just goes to show, it doesn;t take much of an impact to smash a bike up.

After all the hoohah on another thread about Hi Viz vests, v headlights, I wonder if a vest would've helpt him be seen? The headlight wont have made any difference, but his brake light should have alerted the woman. Highlights how simple and quick, it is to have your pride and joy written off.

Sometimes those soccer moms in their Remuera Tractors with tints make it really hard to see beyond them. I guess the answer then is to hang back a bit further but I guess you could also argue that lane splitting would have allowed the woman to plough into the car in front, rather than the biker :innocent:

I disagree... you do NEED to do them. As I say to newbies, it doesn't actually matter who is right or wrong. You can be 100% correct, but you'll still be the one in pain, in hospital or worse. It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you ;)

We don’t really know how this accident happened on the byway (it’s hard not to notice a motorcycle that you sat behind at a traffic light just seconds earlier), but we’re pretty sure of two things: 1) that Suzuki is a total loss, and 2) the rider’s face plant into the Mitsubishi SUV will buff right out. It’s amazing that his rear-end job didn’t result in a worse outcome for the motorcyclist (from what we can tell at least).
