View Full Version : How many real bikers out there?
SpankMe
20th June 2005, 16:37
I would like to know how many full time bikers are in NZ. Riders like myself who have never, ever driven a cage and never will. It almost feels like a lifestyle choice in this cage driving world.
So if you have never been behind the wheel of a car and never wish too, let us know by voting option 1. :2thumbsup
If you have driven a cage in the past, but currently only ride a bike and never wish to drive a cage again, vote option 2. :niceone:
If you currently only ride a bike but will buy a cage someday, vote option 3
Everyone else vote option 4. :bleh:

I don't feel that I fall into any of those categories. EVERY time I go to work I use the bike and quite often on my days off, depending on what I am doing. I certainly use a car as well. Is there a category for that?

Cage is necessary when you have to transport old folk, great big hunksa wood and stuff.

From age 18 to 34, I'd've been able to tick "1".
My boss got downright adamant about me getting a cage licence so I could be exploited further - at my own expense too, I might add. I had to pay my own money to make myself more useful to the company - I already had a perfectly serviceable bike licence which was all I needed. Boss wouldn't accept my stance that if they wanted me to have a car licence, they could pay for it.
Envy you, SM - wish I could get away with not having a car licence but sadly, tis not the case.
As you've deliberately biased the poll, I can't tick "Cars are death-trap coffins on wheels and I hate 'em but I have to use 'em occasionally."

Not enough choices there mate. A real biker is one who, on a rainy, cold morning, will reverse the Merc out of the garage so that he can get the bike out. Car or bike is not often a matter of choice. Family or business commitments usually decide which path you take. Personally, if I ever actually enjoy driving a car I'll have serious doubts about my sanity. (or senility). My longest drive in a car over the last ten years has been 5 miles, taking the wifes car for a WOF. No one would ride a bike if he or she didn't enjoy it. and that's the difference. Cars are for convenience. Bikes are for pleasure.

That leaves me with a problem, cos I like working on cars too. I turned a carbed silvia into an injected turbo, just to see if I could, and now I got a fairmont, which is injected already, but I plan to put two turbos on it, and remove two of the doors.
I have to be a try hard then, and will proceed to vote myself that way. :oi-grr:

I have sacrificed just about everything for bikes... but given the oppertunity, I'd drive anything from small cars to 18 wheelers to ships or fly planes or what ever really. It's not really a mater of 2 wheels or 4 (aka cage).
I have the most fun on 2 wheels, yes but I do like variation, just for fun and sometimes the dreaded practicality.

To bad to ride ? In Auckland ? Is that a confidence thing , or a "can't turn up at werk looking messy" thing . or ? (not taking the micky, just wondering)
Don't get black ice or tornados in Auckland. At most a bit of rain , some windy days.

Usually it's the wind... I don't mind rain... and don't really give a shit if I'm messy for work... I'm the first person to get to work, and I'm alone for about an hour before anyone shows up... so plenty of time to tidy up...
But yeah the wind freaks me out... possibly a confidence thing, before I started biking (before I even had a bike) I was bussing to work, and it was a windy day, looking out the window of the bus as we were going over the harbour bridge... saw a kawasaki and started drooling, next minute the bus shook from the wind and the biker was down sliding one way... the bike the other... That freaked me out... and I've riden once in heavy wind on the motorway and nearly blown into the barrier, cars weren't even passing me in the lane next to me because the wind was throwing me around...
But I'm getting more and more confident and still riding when it's windy... on the rare occasion when I think it's too windy to ride home I just leave my bike at work (24 hour security, security gates and cameras... safer at work then at home lol)

Yeah, it's a confidence thing. Doubt the wind actually blew the Kawa rider off. Never heard of that happening. Probably he made the classic mistake, got scared when the gust hit him and overreacted into it , maybe even braked.
I've ridden the Harbour Bridge in all weathers, including some very high winds. One time the old Bridge Authority was actually stopping bikes and taking them across in their Austin Gypsies. They couldn't get the Velo aboard though (and I didn't want them messing it up) so I rode over. Wasn't too bad.
If you do a search theres some thread's here about riding in high winds. Trick is to relax, and keep speed and revs up. High winds, keep it on the redline. And relax. Big mistake is tensing up, trying to force the bike to go straight.
You'll be fine once you've got a bit more confidence and experience . (Bigger heavier bike helps too . Time you had problems on the motorway, was it the 150 ?)

Yeah I thought like this when I was 20 as well. Sometime later the brain cell found some others :Punk: . I've this Kool HSV with that awesome V8 rumble, it sure don't handle like ma CBR but it sure flys down the road. But then again I'm not the "real biker" type, I just like to hoon around scaring little old ladies. Yeah s'pose it comes from growing up in West Auckland. I'm nearly 50 and have owned a bike most of my life so reading this thread was funny and puts a grin on ma face.
Enough of the I I I and I (oops) hope all you real biker types were out there riding in that rain on Saturday morning
Cages have other reasons for being there than just to run some of us over. Like creating traffic jams for those poor buggers who have to get to work, and so on.
Oh and the CBR doesn't have any coffee cup holders either.

Yeah I suppose I shouldn't say the biker fell off due to wind... at the time I just assumed that seeing as no-one else was involved, it looked like he/she has just fallen off... I assume it was due to the wind...
Yeah when I was nearly blown into the barrier was on the 150. My partner rides it now and doesn't complain about the wind... I've noticed I don't get blown around as much on the 250 :) But still get freaked out sometimes :)

Being 21, and lazy, I've only got the bike license anyway, but I know once you have a family etc, a car will be needed, so option 3 for me.
But for the moment, its bikes only, rain or shine. Coming from bicycles, I'm used to rain anyway, and the bike and I are close to 300kg, so I just lean into wind.

I hate cars, truly deeply despise them... But as I'm a mechanic its quite normal to, I own a litte pile of rust and clunks that has a passing resemblance to a car but ride every day and if I need to drive I still have to ride to work to pick up the death trap. Most people dont like me driving... I think it may be the way I try to lean the car around corners and squeeze it through gaps of a metre or so wide... Its hard to tell with all the screaming and climbing out of windows which one is the problem though, if any one wants to sit next to me to help with this dilema I would be quite amazed, er, I mean gratefull

SpankMe you need more options mate.
I get to ride my bike 95% of the time.
So therefore I take the car out for 5% of the time:
Taking my wee grandaughter out... as she is too small for the bike - plus my daughter wont let her on the bike.
I also take the car when I have to pick something up that I cant actually fit onto the back of the bike.
If it is absolutely hosing down and I have to attend a function.
Oh and I also have my HT license as well.
So I wont vote at all....
You need an option for those that have families and need the car for that reason and the bike for pleasure and the love of riding when ever they can.

My bike is the only form of transport that I own. Sometimes I'll get a lift from someone else though, maybe only once a month though and it's usually because I need a lift after 10pm or if we've got the van for youth group then we fit 10 in it. However since I wasn't driving technically I didn't drive. So yay, option 1 for me.

No, Don't take that attitude. Treat as the bit of humour it was meant to be. Like many others I've indicated I'm a sometime biker. The fact that I need my 4x4 for reasons other than straight transport, or that while my kids were growing up I couldn't fit them all on a bike are completely irrelevent. There you have it !, I'm a first degree dirty cager !.
I don't believe. I'm always thinking motor cycles , I dream motorcycles, I use motorcycles as my number 1 leasure / pleasure activity etc, etc, Shit , went to a motor show on the weekend , walked past all the Ferraris , Aston Martins , Por cheeze's , Gt40 fords, Lotus's and Vaxhaull Manaro's , Past the Bently coupes , past the BMW Williams F1 car and straight to the Ducati stand , and followed by the Honda motorcycle stand.
But, according to this poll I'm just dirty cage driver. F@ck , better get rid of the Ducati thing and get myself a nice tasty cage with comfy seats and built in motorcycle bars on it . Not worthy of being a motorcyclists anymore. Now , where's that nice cagers BBS !
My wife would laugh at this poll . She was option 1 for a number of years, helped out on many motorcylist learners courses , races buckets , but don't tell anyone , she actually drives a cage from time to time. Perhaps Spankme would like to tell her that's she's not a motorcyclists.
Good windup Spankme !.

Option 4 is a bit harsh. Some of us drive cages out of necessity at times but our preferred form of transportation is a bike.
The poll is also a bit hard on those of us who realised our dream later in life. But what the hey?

The only thing I've ridden has been bikes; I've never ridden a horse, goat, camel, or donkey. While it's been a sacrifice to be able to ride bikes, as they're basically a toy, I don't miss not riding anything else, as I have no desire to do so.

You have led a sheltered life. I have ridden a horse, a donkey, and a camel. The horse had lousy brakes, the donkey's acceleration was pisspoor and the camel had the worst cornering I've ever experienced. All three were very unreliable. The horse could do good wheelies, but

I don't reckon them. They all whiff, and they don't got no handlebars.
At least some goats have handlebars, but the seat's a bit uncomfortable. And they still whiff.

What I wanna know is: What's a biker and why would I care if I was one?
Until three or four years ago, I never rode on the street, apart from transport sections. This was despite buying my first bike in 1977. In the 27 years since, I've raced at National Level, been pit crew at several MotoGP's, served on my local club as El Presidente, been a District Steward and generally had a fantastic time with various forms of motorcycle sport.
So if someone I've never met doesn't consider that I qualify for a title I've never quite understood, I think I'll get over it....

But there’s always plenty more that are willing pillions that enjoy riding. Ha ha ha. This post has really exposed our feelings for not being Hard core bikers.
I just clicked option 4, before I'd even read any posts. I found the whole "holier than thou" / "more staunch than youse fullas" thing smacked of a chip on someone's shoulder or summat.
I've ridden for a long time now, too long to have to justify the whys and wherefores of it.
I'm not as hard core as the two Filthy Few gang members I saw in the 70s, who both had their left legs in plaster (altercation with a ute) on a Triumph. The pillion carried the crutches.
I'm not as hard core as OneArmedBandit. :niceone:
I'm not a 'real biker' because I enjoy driving good cars on winding roads. (But I do admit to driving crap cars on winding roads and wishing I had my bike). And sometimes I honestly prefer driving to riding. Life's too short to do things because you should, rather than because you want to.
I commuted by bike every day in Christchurch, including two days when it was snowing, apart from the odd times I had to take the car to drop kids off. And the one time when I took the bike only as far as the first intersection, and decided black ice wasn't a good idea, especially when one couldn't even walk on it, and the 4WD was slippin' and slidin' everywhere. If I was hard core, I would've gone and put some screws in the tyres, hardened up and rode.
I know I'm not hard core like SpankMe, especially after reading this:

Back in grandad's heyday, there would be at least five crammed on and in his bike and sidecar - grandad, grandma, mum, my uncle and at least 1 of my aunts. They rode everywhere - all over the King Country on gravel roads - when grandad was working in the sawmills.
You'd probably not get away with quite as many, these days.
Wish I did own a decent bike with side-car - it'd mean that we could take the boys on the Toy Runs and other events now instead of waiting for them to get "big enough".
As to getting stirred up about this poll, I have my own sense of identity and don't give a hoot whether others would classify me as a "real biker" or not. I know that I prefer bikes to cars for a large number of reasons, and I also know that cars have their uses; I've been called insane by others as I've set off on journeys on a variety of different bikes under various conditions; I've ridden in adverse weather from metal-bits-get-brittle-and-snap-off cold to torrential rain and gale force winds (when getting hit by branches or, worse, power lines was a real risk); I rode my TS125 everywhere with my right arm in a cast and I've stood in solitude by my bike at around 2am in the middle of nowhere having a quiet cigarette - miles had gone by and more miles to come before I reach my destination - revelling in the feeling of being alone and free, apart from all humankind. It's what I feel and care about inside that matters to me.
I don't judge who is a "real biker" as we all have our own needs and those needs vary from person to person; time to time. If a person is taking on the traffic on two wheels, they have my respect - be they on a scooter or a Harley. If a person is taking on the traffic on two wheels in the freezing cold or pissing rain, then they have even more of my respect - but I would not deem someone who doesn't "not a true biker" or a "wannabe" - I do not know them, I do not know what reason or combination of reasons they may have for laying-up the bike for winter. I'll let others decide what labels they wish to apply to themselves, if any.

She couldn't understand why I would spend so much on cages, as these were only something to get you from A to B. Well, times changed, I ended up getting bike, and she a car. yep... been a cage driver for quite a few years, but since owning a bike (under a month) am totally converted
drove my car (that I used to love) yesterday and just can't get past having to WAIT IN TRAFFIC... one instance waiting twice for the same set of lights - definitely considering selling it in once off my L-licence to get a 600cc
if only there was a "former cage driver, but have seen the light and never want to voluntarily drive a cage again (unless absolutely necessary*)" option to select
* Note: one benefit of my car is that I can fit my ice hockey gear and sticks when heading off to play every week... can just imagine trying to lug that shit to the game on my bike!
I guess i fall i category 4. Though i would imagine i ride more km's then most in the other categories. But thats fine, your all so much more biker then me. I ride roughly 630Km per working week or about 20,000Km per year. But i also have 5 kids and they are dam hard to fit on a bike. And as to fitting 2 weeks of shopping on a bike.... Well i could try but I'm not that stupid. So i will PROUDLY say that i am practical in cat 4 and not insanely fanatic in cat 1.

And my favourite recreation - other than flying - is to ride
"Live To Ride - Ride To Work"
I would like to know how many full time bikers are in NZ.
:bleh:
Well,if it almost feels like a lifestyle choice then you aint a "biker" either mate.

Yea. I think that people who own bikes as well as a cage should be as mucha bike as a person who dosnt owna cage. Here is why. Bikes are exspencive, i can put 2 or 3 tyres on the cage for the cost of one tyer that the bike needs, i dont need to have a helmet in the cage etc i can still go fast in a cage yet i still own two bikes?
I have three bikes and a car. I use the right tool for the job and don't have to beg my car owning mates for favours. But you are still my idol spank  You're so much better than any fool who has driven a car. Maybe new name? Skidspank? :Pokey:

I drive a Toyota Hilux, New Zealand's most popular light-truck. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Although it doesn't come close to riding, I love it to pieces.
I was glad I learned to drive in a car, otherwise I would have paid with my body instead of a bumper, making those mistakes that learners inevitably do...

yep... been a cage driver for quite a few years, but since owning a bike (under a month) am totally converted
drove my car (that I used to love) yesterday and just can't get past having to WAIT IN TRAFFIC... one instance waiting twice for the same set of lights - definitely considering selling it in once off my L-licence to get a 600cc
if only there was a "former cage driver, but have seen the light and never want to voluntarily drive a cage again (unless absolutely necessary*)" option to select
* Note: one benefit of my car is that I can fit my ice hockey gear and sticks when heading off to play every week... can just imagine trying to lug that shit to the game on my bike!
Thats the only reason i have a car is for lugging big shit around...well when i have a car....
So plan is a van next...so when i need to do cage stuff i can, but doubles as a race van for taking bike too and from ruapuna.:devil2:

52 years old this year. Got my licence at the tender age of 15. Never got around to getting a licence for a cage. This isnt to say I havent driven. A number of times I have been known to get behind the wheel and take a spin but I just dont feel the pull towards two extra wheels.
When I am old and decrepid ( say 55 years old) I may gor for the 4 wheel cage but only if my balance and coordination have been shot to hell.

Wow! There are actually some losers motorcycle riders out there that can't afford, or don't know how to drive a car and have no car licence..???
No wonder some people here have such a "us and them" mentality.

Woops, I chose option 2, but reading the first post I'm actually option 1 hehe.
Never owned a car, never driven a car, only ridden motorcycles and that's the way it will stay, rain, hail or shine.
/Edit to reply to above post: It's just a choice, I just personally like to ride bikes no matter the conditions, have no need for a car and if, in some outrageous emergency I need to be in one, my other half has her car, I've got no problem with car drivers. I just personally like to ride bikes, a lot :D I only see challenges to not having a car license, not obstacles. Gotta make life interestin' !

Iagree with ZADOK, I ain't voting either, i ride 95% of days, but still have to get in the truck to make money to buy more toys...........and .........last year the missus worked out i've done over 850,000 k's in 30+ years......so surely i can call myself a real biker.
Not like the dork i work with that has a seven year old 'Busa with less than 24,000 k's on the clock and no car.........he rides a friggin PUSH bike to work.......what a TWAT.

Though a teenager without a car is as bad as a teenager without a cellphone (I know cause I haven't got one of them either). You get pushed into getting a car by peers and parents, plus the lack of storage space on a bike doesn't help.

I have 3 cars and a bike. The bike sees the light of day 5 days a week rain hail or shine, 1 car goes to the supermarket each weekend, and the other 2 cars sit quietly in the garage waiting for some love and attention.

I have both a bike and a car but noone can tell me I'm not a real commited biker when Ive Just spent the last two hours riding around Auckland picking stuff up in the pouring rain (the wind picked up a bit for a while also). therefore I choose option 5, A real biker who also owns a car for when he needs to carry around more than one sexy lady at a time! LOL
I have 10 motorcycles and half a dozen cars....I have a 3 car garage that can't fit a car because it's full of motorcycle stuff.I don't take my bike to the shop for someone to fix it.If that's not being a real biker I don't know what is.Certainly not someone who can't fix their only means of transport without help,or someone who has to get other people to shift things for them because they won't fit on a bike.A real biker is self reliant, totally immersed in it,not some wimp who doesn't get their hands dirty.

Well according to this poll I’m also a biker wannabe. I haven’t been called this before, so you can go and kiss my shiny leather clad butt. You can actually call me what you like as long as it isn’t “late for dinner”.
I like all my vehicles, my knees and hands ache now with arthritis so I am not much of a cold weather rider, but saying that I have made to the last 19 Brass Monkeys. Take for instance Saturday last weekend, it was snowing here and I chose to fire up my old trusty v8 landrover and drove over Dyers pass into Christchurch for supplies. I could have taken the bike but chose not to, it was just too cold and far too dangerous. Does being prudent make me a biker wannabe?
I also have an interest in performance cars, and my sports bike now has 4 wheels, air conditioning and a CD player. Does this make me a biker wannabe, well I actually don’t care. It does however make me an old fart in a sports car.
While I was a student the only vehicle I has was a 250cc motorcycle, it was easy to park cheap to run. I put up with the inconvenience because it worked. Having said that I did not have a choice, the bike was all I had so I had to use it. Does necessity make me a real biker?
I now have a choice when and where I ride, I guess I am lucky in that regard. I ride because I want to, I ride because I can and I ride because it is good for the soul. Does this make me a biker wannabe? Possibly but actually I don’t care I’ve gone out riding…
I have 10 motorcycles and half a dozen cars....I have a 3 car garage that can't fit a car because it's full of motorcycle stuff...
Fark. You got more bikes than me. I've been outbiked .How did that happen.
Still , on the good side that gives me an an angle to overcome Mrs Ixion's objections to another bike. "But that only makes nine, dear (even by your count). And Mr Motu has 10, so clearly nine is not excessive at all". Woot. Trademe, here I come.
Hm, not sure though if she'd be convinced. I think she thinks you are a bad influence. Especially since she found out about the frogs.

Ask Motu how many of his actually run....
Good point. Except he might ask the same
Hey, Mr Motu, have you got that Ducati running yet?
..... Especially since she found out about the frogs.

Unloaded the Suzi GT250 this morning - the barn space is getting smaller......the car and van already live outside and it's starting to look bleak for the Allis Chalmers ...........

irelevancies....irrelevancies..............it's the having!
A mate in Waitara has about 45 (at last count) '50's and '60s Hondas, and I'm sure 4 or 5 are actually restored and running................
Anyway - who revived this thread - I'm such a hard biker I can't be buggered looking........

I'm a racer, I use a car to tow my motorcycle trailers with all my bikes on to the track.
I also ONLY drive my car on the road if I have to, eg going to pick people up, or if I have a whole lot of stuff in the back etc.
I go shopping on my scooter usually, and I only ride a scooter, motorbike, or pushbike to work.
I guess that makes me a car driving wannabe.
Fark. You got more bikes than me. I've been outbiked .How did that happen.
Well, they aren't all mine, one is my wife's,one the son in laws, and bikes for my kids....I paid for them, but they belong to them (off road only). And as Oscar points out....they don't all go.But bikes that don't go are bikes that need work, and I'd be kinda lost if I had a shed full of bikes that only needed a polish....where's the fun in that? The bike under the sheet is a Guzzi, not a Ducati...it'll have to go as part of my next clean out.

um counting bikes in a garage?
err
a local gentleman
bought this farm recently,
to move away from the prying eyes of the big city.
In the past month he has dumped 6 tonnes of parts that are US.
The shed?
Well want your eyes to fall out?
Mine did
Two, industrial sized chook barns full!!!!!
I went to get a clutch pack...err...took my choice from more than 10 XS1100's!
Where? I cannot tell, but he has over 100 RIDEABLE bikes on reg hold according to his records.
This is not a wind up, as he is a retired wrecker from somewhere, these are the ones that got away......He is retired now, and spends his days rebuilding bikes. They appear on the market when he needs more cash.
The farm is a working farm, but you would not guess its secret
Now THAT is what I call a biker
Oh and he drives a truck!

A Stornello 160....I've had it from new.But stopped riding it nearly 20 years ago,and it's been lying around since...and looks like it.And that reminds me the owners manual is sitting in front of me...I have to scan it and send it to Pete Kelly.
I'd be up for a blat.
Ah, Moto-Cuzzy, Ducrappi, all a sama Eytalian , FOREIGN like. Not proper pukka Briddish. Doesn't matter what the badge says, the electrics will crap
out. I drive an Alfa , I KNOW about Guiseppi's electrics. It's their revenge for Monte Cassino.
Have you got that Yamahappy engine showhorned into theh Triumph frame yet?
A Stornello 160....I've had it from new....
Hey ? You had a NEW bike? You bloated capitalist plutocrat , you :devil2: . I never had a new bike in my life .
I thought you wuz a fellow bottom feeder, how come you wuz feeding at the top of the food chain? :motu: And why'd y' pick THAT bike for a new one!

Coz I was bottom feeding! They were '74 models lying around in some house/car shark/wrecker in franklin - we bought 5 of them in a folding cash in hand waved under the nose deal....with trailers and pickup around the corner. That was in 1978,and I sometimes see one surface and track down the owner...just keeping an eye on my baby Starlings. It's a nice bike, the engine sort of a V twin turned around....and in it's day was way faster and handled way better than anything made in that other country with precision but no passion.
Ah, well, that's different. So long as you wuz ripping off the capitalist exploiters, like. Nothing wrong with the BIKES to be sure, except the electrics. But, of course, they wuz FOREIGN. Didn't even have proper nuts n bolts, real spanners didn't fit them. Never take the place of the Bantam.
(We seem to have very successfully hijacked this rather boring old thread) .
And you still haven't let on about the Trimaha . Have you found a jack big enough to force the frame members apart yet? Bet you haven't you've been spending all your time trying to figure out how to make BMW gearboxes change gear like proper transmissions haven't you. I have some of the magic Molyslip magic goo left. Doesn't really make any difference, but you can persuade y'self that the crunch-clonk is less noticeable (from 2 kilometres away) than it was before.

Yeah, crap thread about massaging someones ego because they don't know how to drive a car.
The Yamumph is a plaything for my mind in boring moments at this stage....I walk past a bike and mentally fit the forks or rear wheel into the parts I have, things like that.I want to look at Erik's spare Bandit.Need to clear the bike stand - the DT230 has been on it for a month and I've done 2 hours work to it...need to stop helping other people in their troubles and sort myself out instead. Then the Umphaha goes on.I think the R65 shifts really well, certainly better than my /5 or XLV750 did.The wife has completed her German set....a C220 to match her R65.
There is a nice D3 riding around here - with C10 forks and a Suzuki front wheel....good to know free thinkers are still out there.

Heheheh...brilliant - that needs highlighting.

I don't feel that I fall into any of those categories. EVERY time I go to work I use the bike and quite often on my days off, depending on what I am doing. I certainly use a car as well. Is there a category for that?
Add me to that as well.
I'm not allowed to transport my 16 month old daughter on the bike :(
Yeah, crap thread about massaging someones ego because they don't know how to drive a car.
This is a young person inexperience thread - add to "I'll never drive a car"
I'll never -
sell out
get a boring job
work 9-5
get married
slow down
stay in instead of go out
Joni might think about all the things she said as a young'un -
I'll -
never like boys
like x music
do (insert saucy thing here)
wear clothes like (mum etc)
Did you keep to them?
Trouble about Liefstyle choices (as Joni put it) - eventually LIFE tends to get in the way ...
Its pretty easy to say "I'll never" from the high horse.
Pretty hard to look back and find you kept to those choices. If you post here in 30 yrs and can say "and I never DID own a car" I'll give you top respect.
However, until then I find those people who keep riding even though life gets in the way - including needing to drive and own cars - get my respect as the real riders ...
If you post here in 30 yrs and can say "and I never DID own a car" I'll give you top respect.
Except I'll probably be dead of course ...

Aaaaaah, "labels", "pigeon-holes" and "stereotypes", ya gotta luv 'em.....not to mention the self-righteous judgemental types who seek to apply them.
It's ferkin' funny too how people take a holier than thou pride in putting themselves through certain completely avoidable hardships, like my grandmother who took a vicious pride in handwashing dishes, even when a dishwasher was available...or the old bugger up the street who used to battle away for hours every Thursday with an equally ancient push mower, even though he wasn't short of a quid.
Now that I think of it, is it pride...or is it fear?
Never driven a car? So you've never driven around with your hand on the silky skin of your girlfriends' thigh? Or gone through the pre-dawn ritual of checking your bike/trailer and heading off to your first race meeting, your mind ablaze with the possibilities of what you might have forgotten and what the day will bring. You've never driven home from the hospital with your amazing wife/life partner and fresh first-born child in the car, your whole universe seemingly within arms reach?
To me it's a fairly simple life choice, do you want to be a passenger...or a driver?
