Half an hour or so ago I was on my way home for lunch. I was speeding down a short hill at the bottom of which I make a right hand turn. Speed is a relative concept in this instance you understand, I was on the moped.
When I was half way down the hill a woman in a big 4WD came out of the road to the right swung right across the road and headed toward me on my side of the road. I don't know what she was doing, but she definitely was not driving.
My headlight was on as was the blinker, but she wasn't even looking out the windscreen. A hi viz vest would've done jack shit, even a set of disco lights...
So I grabbed the brakes and threw the moped to the left at which point she decided to take a look where she was going and jerked the wheel to the left.
It was very close.
Of course Katman would say it was my fault.
And I'd say bollocks!
Be careful out there. Some of them actually are trying to kill you.

Glad it ended OK.
Last time I took my GF for a ride on the bike we had about 4 people pull out from intersections on us. Each time I was able to avoid them fairly easily, after we got home she asked if it is always that bad? I told her yes pretty much, it is unusual to go for a ride and not have someone fail to give way.
Gotta watch out for them, cause heaven knows they are not watching out for us!

But don't forget she needs that 4WD to do the school run each morning, and you can't expect her to look where she's going, that's what the bull bars are fitted for - so it's just your fault for being on two wheels and daring to get in her way :innocent:

Reminds me of a situation a few years back. I used to do a bit of motor vehicle accident investigation as part of a job I held. When I questioned a driver of a 4 wheel drive who had turned across the path of a motorcycle causing serious financial and physical loss her response was:
:innocent:"Motorbikes are dangerous, so it's not my fault"
"So your statement is that you have no liability to the motorcycle rider as his vehicle is dangerous so that makes it his fault that you failed to give way and turned directly across his path?"
:innocent:"Yes." Said completely seriously.
"We'll see you in court then I guess."

@Ferkletastic - Holy crap, some people are idiots. See above statement.

It would appear after recent events that you can add to that list:
He wasn't wearing a hi-vis vest so I didn't see him, ergo, his fault
Glad your still with us to ride another day Pritch and if any of us truly believe that 'some' of the drivers out there aren't trying to kill us, deliberately or by willful neglect then you'd best wise up fast.
Contrary to the opinion of some around here, we are not always the master of our own destiny, hard as we try, if someone drives a monster truck straight at you , you best hope your guardian angel is riding pillion, cause you're gonna need a bucket full of miracles.

I really think you should apologise to her next time you meet.:gob:

Congratulations for living another day. You can also hit the horn, over the last couple of years I have been training myself to use it all the time when I find drivers on my side of the road.
Fuckers on the wrong side of the road is one of my pet hates. I live in a small sea side village at the end of a windy road on banks peninsular, every fucking day I take the bike out I have to avoid some fucker driving on the wrong side of the road, most of the time it is fat bald old men in 4Wds taking racing lines. What I do now days is i hit the horn and keep it going until they have passed. I have also fitted a loud horn that I got from Screaming Eagle Catalog. Worth every cent.

No time to wave, or to use the horn. Anyhoo, the air horn on the bike gets attention but the horn on the moped is just embarrassing...
The driver was so far off-task she probably wouldn't have known if someone was up her. :buggerd:

Jeeze - I cant figure out why LEO's get disillusioned with people... Thats just a short step from proving how dangerous motorcycles are by running them off the road... I wonder how she would feel if a truck driver decided to show her just how dangerous her 4WD was...

I have the solution! All we need to do is add a few extra wheels to our bikes to help avoid falling on crap roads and a bit of additional built in ATGATG for protection against stupid SUV drivers.

Happens all the time, day in day out. Nothing unusual at all. To all those ignorant hairy-assed boys on this site who think close calls are never really their own fault, GET THIS: YOUR BROKEN SMASHED-UP BODY WON'T GIVE A FUCK IF IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT OR NOT. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD. Maybe, just maybe, all the wide-eyed and naive little brats around here who think they know it all are starting to see what it's all about out there?? Maybe, just maybe, the mouthy know-alls here are gonna learn not to ever trust any other fucker on the road. Ever. Maybe, just maybe, all their indignant "BUT, BUT,I WAS IN THE RIGHT" blame game mentality will wear off and all the hairy-assed brats on this site will start to fucken understand?

Easy on the P man! Maybe Pritch is warning others? Maybe it's good to have a website like this you can vent on rather than take any rage out on the road?
I'm with you (always your own responsibility - he said / she said who cares? - it's my body) - but I don't want to share the road with someone with your attitude. Likely to nut off.

Then of course you've got all the creepy simpering religious weirdos out there living in their little worlds of fantasy and make-believe who think God controls everything and Jesus is gonna look after everyone on the roads. It's "But, but, I prayed to Jesus this morning, so everything will be warm fuzzies and Jesus will be on my side" Why bother keeping a good eye out? " We can't take responsibility for riding like brainless morons because only God can control our actions.." Lets all hold hands and pray to Jesus to keep us all safe... pitiful pitiful pitiful...

Not that it will be of any consolation but twice in the last 3 days I have had vehicles pull out on me while I have been in the car, close enough for me to chuck the anchor out to avoid collecting them, I drive with my lights on, same as the bike & had what you would interpret as eye contact with the drivers.
Yesterday I was following a camper van which pulled onto a roundabout directly in front of a double trailer Mack truck, the really big ones! Much noise of tyres, air brakes & suspension. The camper van driver actually stopped to angrily eyeball up at the truck driver. This was my face :shit:
It's lethal out their people, some road users do not give a flying f^*k & some are just morons, plain & simple.
Every miss is a win in my book.

I wonder if some people (subconsciously?) misinterpret eye contact as "he's letting me in"?

That has crossed my mind a few times too or maybe they are just checking out if I look scary or not & make their decision based on my fearsomeness (or lack of).
I think most incidents boil down to people driving / riding habitually rather than paying attention to the here & now & paying attention to the here & now gives you those few feet you need to have a near miss.

Ditto on the bike but for some reason I have more hassle in the car:blink:
But I do live in the boonies & ride fairly quiet roads on the bike & use the car to get to work in town where all the numpties are.
I'm usually shattered after riding through Auckland which I only do once or twice a year because my concentration is so intense.
