I have a question about vinyl. As you look down at the LP as it spins, is the LH channel read directly from the outside of the groove? I have a permanent imbalance of playback level, biased to the left and wondering if I have not enough anti skate?

Sorry to fuck up your friday with a serious question!

The easy way to sort that would be to vary the anti-skate and see if it makes a difference - but I'm sure you would have tried that anyway.

Back in the day when I was seriously into this stuff, the only time I ever had such a problem, it was amplifier related. Tried me mate's amp and it was all good. Could never sort my old amp so bought another one - of better quality. Problem solved. Albeit at considerable cost...

speaking to an engineer here at work his advice was, "if your turntable is correctly setup and balanced, then the problem is either in the amp or the cartridge. If you swap the left right leads for the cartridge and the balance problem stays the same, then the fault is in the amp, if it swaps channels then the fault is with the cartridge."

also found this interesting http://www.turntablebasics.com/advice.html apparently the answer is yes anti-skate can mess with your balance

No worries, I expect my Friday to be unaffected by this question.

Back in the gloomy days of history, I used a graphic equaliser to balance the output from vinyl, though I have been known to add weight to the cartride to "grind" a more even track :dodge:
