It is going to be a big year for the locust

About deafening at times.

Imagine paying good money to go to an exclusive lodge/spa/retreat and being bombarded with some of the loudest sounds imaginable. No peace

Cant wait for the crickets :dodge:

Sometimes they overlap :shit:

They peak in NZ in two year's time. 17 year cycle. It's called a circadian rhythm.

I thought that was when one was a drummer.

It's just another sign that the end of the world is nigh.
Locusts, earthquakes, floods, fire, blizzards, birds falling out of the sky, Liz Hurley shagging Shane Warne...it has all been predicted!
Flee...flee I say!!!!!!

Yeah they can get really loud,i don't mind the crickets, they are a rather calming sound, kinda like rain on the roof, although if there are too many of them, might get annoying.

James Deuce

They've been measured at 108dB in the Belmont Forest Park when at peak numbers. I once counted (approx) 3500 on one wall of my house when we first moved in and it wasn't the full length wall.

Can't hear them. Well, I can, but it's the same frequency / cadence as my tinnitus. Can't tell the difference.

Nice! In other news my tinnitus disappeared with my last head injury. :niceone:

Bugger,so it must be like having one of those things in your head 24/7? :shit:

Mate they have been driving me nuts for the last week or so, they are so bloody loud. Tried closing all the widows and doors, but then it gets too hot. Tried shaking the trees but then the bastards bombard me.

They were really bad 2 years ago too.

Weird. Maybe the cochlear cells took it to be a sign to straighten up and fly right. Haven't heard of too many remissions.

Ocean1

Bugger,so it must be like having one of those things in your head 24/7? :shit:

Yeah, but like any other sense you only percieve changes in the signal. So 99% of the time I don't "hear" it. It does, however detract from my ability to hear other things exactly as if it was real background noise.

James Deuce
11th February 2011, 20:20
Ruptured an eardrum and did in the crystals behind the inner ear in the last one, plus they think my tinnitus was caused by a previous head injury not hearing damage. I did a hearing test last year and my hearing is perfect except for a tiny mid-range drop, which is amazing considering years in bands, playing drums, and riding bikes.

Silver lining eh? Gota take 'em as you find 'em.

Exactly, plus I'm fitter now than I have been for years, plus my BPPV is almost gone except when I'm really knackered.

Bugger,so it must be like having one of those things in your head 24/7? :shit:

Yup, the sound in the first vid is very close to what I have all the time only at a low background level. I find it easier to get to sleep with background noise. Still nights are murder.

James Deuce

Not. Hit yourself in the head, hard, until it stops.

My ex wife once suggested something very close to that.

Supposedly they only start up their racket when the temperature reaches 18 degrees.

Certainly does. No messing around with subtle flies. Whack on a cicada fly, splat it down in a run and wait for the fun.

My house is on the edge of a gully. The bedroom I inhabit is on the gully side and is one floor above ground level. I leave the balcony door open all summer to stop the place melting down in the heat.

So I wake up every morning to the cicada chorus. Loud as hell. Especially this year. There must be ten gazillion of the little buggers down there. But I love 'em. Waking to that is a pleasure for me.

Mind you, one potential buyer of my house said she wouldn't buy it because there were "too many cicadas"... Stupid cow. I told the agent to tell her to fuck off then...

Each to their own no doubt.

Their is a stand of old pine trees just down the road from my house which are always chocka with the little critters. This year has been exceptional to the point where the dog will not walk past. Since the monsoon it is a lot quieter. To warm for troutys up here but I bet the snapper in the bay have taken advantage.

Fella at Full Throttle in Puke told me his forecourt was covered in crickets this morning- he'd vacuumed up 2 full loads from inside his premises as well... Loads of the fekkers round here as well.
Just been the long way round (:scooter:) for some baccie as well, and there were loads of bugs clattering into me lid- time to get the scraper out!

'Scuse my higgerance, but what's the difference between a cricket and a cicada? If any.

Laava

A cricket is a Honda CBR600RF and a Cicada is a Yamaha Venture Royale, comparatively speaking.

I have tons of little black crickets in the grass hopping all over the place and "trimming the lawn and paddock grass".

The cicadas are usually larger winged beasts that cling to branches and gnaw them to bits while making their rather loud noises. They do quite a bit of damage to smaller trees.

Having said that I would not trade living rural for anything. I love it out here.

Yeah, I live at KKK too and I wouldn't go back to the N shore for Quids.
Can't stand bloody crickets coming under my garage door and into the house though.
Drives me nuts with the little varmints churping while I try and watch tv.

Same here. They get in everywhere! I don't know what is worse, the chirping or the sound of my Burmese cats torturing their captives. Beats the sound of traffic and suburban or city noise any day, although I do love the sound of bikes heading up SH16 in the distance.... mmmmm

I am heading out for a ride today. Perfect day for it and the beauty of shift work!
