View Full Version : Screw Youies. Has their time come to be banned?

I commute on a motorcycle, and apart from cars coming out of side streets looking like they are not even going to slow down is the U TURN.
I remember when there were signs down Queen Steet saying No U Turn.
Older cars had poor turning circles so the three point turn was more common. This was tought as part of you licence.
Now with cars having power steering and good steering locks motorists feel they can do a u turn anywhere.
- miss your turn....do a youie.
-outside the dairy by a pedestrian crossing just past a roundabout.....do a youie.
- At the traffic lights and your Tom Tom says " turn left 100 metres back"...do a youie.
And no Mr Katman :violin:...you can't predict it as the if even the fecking drivers don't know what they are doing next.
Probably more of an Auckland issue as here you can get your licence from a fortune cookie.:innocent:

ride around tauranga for a month, then you will not complain about the drivers where u live.
In saying that I still have no problems with other road users, I'm just used to the bad drivers and ride accordingly.
I do find myself agreeing with Katman frequently, and I have to laugh when bikers get all mad about people doin dumb shit in their vehicles.
Get used to it or let the hate consume you while you wait for the next unidentified hazard take you out.... rant over.

I dont think 3 pt turns is the answer, they start out like a u turn, which is the bit that roots you
Maybe the answer is indicating before starting the u turn

Unfortunately IMO this problem is largely down to the inept road Police policy makers:
The Police claim to want to make the roads safer. Pedantically handing out $150 fines for something not relevant to the road safety of other road users, rather than to dangerous drivers failing to indicate appropriately or doing illegal U-turns is indicative of the “let’s go after the easy meat as it makes out stats look good with out us having to do any work” policy.
IMO – A key contributor to the one death a week stats for motorcycle deaths is the road policing policy makers. IMO - The general standards of road usage are far lower than they should be.
After all a crime is a crime, so let’s make ourselves look as good as possible and screw the safety of others.
Weekly revenue forecast meetings must be heaps of fun.
Not wholly the fault of Police Officers – they just do their jobs as directed.

Yes you could do a Pitmans course.:innocent:
That looks like fun

Yes you could do a Pitman's course.:innocent:
I would rather go with the up skilling option.
There is always more I can do to keep myself safe. To say there isn't is to place my entire future in the hands of some invisible (possibly) unproven force that supposedly wants me to crash at some stage
When the Insurance man told me my bike falling over and landing on a mates bike was an "Act of God" I told him, "don't make me do a Billy Connelly on you. I think God has better things to do with his time than kick over bikes"
So, Pitman's, Prayer or Up skill?
Hell of a lot easier for me to up skill than to try and change the world. (thats Gods job :innocent: allegedly  )
But then that would mean I would have to change my attitude, bugger where do I learn Pitman's? :corn:

Apparently incorrect indication at roundabouts is not on the driving test checklist. So someone can do it wrong during their test and still pass!

You can pass the test without even being tested - I didn't get past the warm up stage (10 minutes) and he passed me, for my full bike license.

Banning U turns is not the answer. You are obviously only looking at the issue from a city point of view. Imagine mising the turn in to Haast petrol station when heading north. You would have to go all the way to Fox Glacier before you could find a block to ride around, if you have the fuel to get there.
Even here in Central Otago, miss the turn off at Cromwell to go to Queenstown and you have to go all the way to Tarras.
There are already rules in place to make U-turns safe. Just enforce them rather than concentrate on speed for the tickets.

This morning I watched a big 4WD Toyota pull an illegal U right in front of a police car. Right across a solid line close to a pedestrian crossing. Did the policeman do anything. Not a chance:angry:

I was watching an interesting doco on how purely religious and low skilled people tend to have on average 5-6 kids per family. While the people at the tops of their fields tend to maybe have 1 or 2. And in quite a lot of cases none. Therefore smart genetics obviously shall be out of the equation soon enough
Apparently humans have lost quite a lot of brain matter compared to early homo-sapiens. We can rely on eachother and aren't required to think as much. Even more so with computers now, man people are gonna fail epically. :bye:

That's the trouble. Most people think they are "above average" as drivers/riders and everybody else are idiots...
...so the status quo remains.

This is already very evident in this country. Add the fact that most of our best young brains go overseas, exacerbating the problem.

I promise I won't go overseas when I finish uni... cough... cough.
Who knows though loads end up coming back after a decade or two. So as soon as that flow starts returning, NZ might end up a much better place.
But I mean look at America... general populus isn't that promising. But they import so many PhD students. I think the figure was around 40% of people that have doctorates in America weren't born there! That country will go down the toilet soon enough. :woohoo:

Oh no I'm not saying that those who go through university are intelligent. Especially NZ universities, not to mention thoughs that take BA's.
But you'd think most "intelligent" people would tend towards education in some form or another. Not quite as easy to differentiate when everyone goes to uni these days

When you said you didn't get any "grasp upon reality" did you mean culturally, or physically?
I'm studying physics/calculus so physical reality is easily defined to me. Culturally not so much, that's mainly because I refuse to do some cultural degree aka a BA! :nya:

It is not so much the need to ban the U-turn, there needs to be a total attitude shift in all road users. We have woeful and inadequate training for learner drivers/riders. It needs to be drummed into gen pop right at the start to be responsible for our own safety and considerate to other road users.
Good luck with considerate, given the way that some parents are raising their kids is all I can say!

The whole of Society needs a rethink and a kick up the Khyber imho, we have gone soft and PC mad, we have spiraling crime rates, confused schooling, and we are lacking social/relational skills, and each generation is getting worse (that is a statistical generalisation, not every youth is a knuckle dragging yob)
Me thinks a socially responsible rethink is needed......... nah never happen politicians are to scared of upseting liberal minority groups (unless they ride:innocent:)... rant over I have to go and save the world from itself

I've ridden/driven in lots of countries mainly in Europe and NZ's driving would be up there....er down there.. with Turkey and Portugal.
Seems to decline the futher south you go.....
For example:
the Autobahn has 3 lanes, the slow lane for slow vehicles and trucks, the centre lane for faster vehicles, the outer lane for overtaking only.
Trucks do no use this lane.
However we dont' have that here....see the Southern motorway on any day....trucks and noddys in the outside lane....even when the the other two are empty.....apparently you don't have to keep to the left here..... unless the sign says " keep left unless overtaking"

Oh I don't know... the US census and research into USA doctoral recipents.
"27 out the 87 (more than 30%) American Nobel Prize winners in Medicine and Physiology between 1901 and 2005 were born outside the US"
"In 1985, foreign-born Phds represented almost 33% of the engineering post-doctorate researchers in US universities."
"33% of all U.S. Ph.D.s in science and engineering are now awarded to foreign born graduate students (2004)"
"45% of Ph.D. physicists working in the United States are foreign born (2004)."
"55% of Ph.D. students in engineering in the United States are foreign born (2004)."

"Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of Ph.D. scientists and engineers employed in the United States who were born abroad has increased from 24% to 37%"
Hmmm, I am talking a bunch of utter shit. You really think American education is that great? In some states they teach creationism in the science classroom for goodness sakes!
Been there so I can truthfully talk about it?! Even if I went there I wouldn't be able to research all the doctors in the country... Needless to say why the heck would I want to go there in the first place.
 Americans.
