Ok have narrowed it down to KLX 300 or WR 250 but need to have electric start and not many KLXs are electric. My riding is going to be mostly trail and the lighter the better ( bike weight ). What are the comparisons between these two bikes, i have been off the bike scene for 18 years and the bikes have changed so much.

If you're choosing between these two bikes, the simple answer is the WR....

The KLX is a perfectly adequate trail bike, nice donk and will climb anything, but is heavy and feels like a bike that was developed in the 90's. The WR is a great bike, nice and light for an enduro bike, handles great, nice friendly engine (not the gruntiest, but you can still row it along at a fair lick).

Basically the KLX feels like it was build with one eye on the farm, the WR feels like it was built with one eye on the GNCC.

yes Wr is my first choice but for the money the KLX looks appealing if you can get the electric start. loads of guys have said that the klx is old tech but a very reliable bike. Would like to get the 07 WR 250 alloy frame but dont think the budget can strech that far might have to sell a few cars ha!!!

the klx300 never came out in electric start, the 250 did and there are a few poeple that have made them 300's

in all reality a WR250 is a much better bike, better suspension, more top end power,

the klx300 is old school, but a very sweet handling bike,

I've got two mates who ride klx300's ('07 I think). For the most part they seem to go fine for the casual trail riding we do, but they are an absolute prick to start if one of the guys has an off and the bike ends up on its side.
When you're already a bit stuffed from getting the bike back up it is totally draining to have to then kick it 20+ times!

yup, totaly true, i had an 05, good bike but if it goes on its side, ill be like, you go ahead ill catch up, even if you got a very early wr, i ended up with an alloy frame wr, she's awsome, but if you have a good leg and want a good cheap trail bike, you can live with and enjoy a klx.

Haha I find that with mine as well, Ive done the grey wire mod, which changers the ignition timing to a YZ, also openend up the air box and fitted a DMC AfterBurner Quiet4 muffler and pipe, Love it:woohoo:

i had one and i crashed it heaps and never had any trouble starting it .
a guy on here told me wide open throttle and they start every time.
and thats what i did and it worked every time.
and it ended upside down in creeks and some shithole places but that bike always started and never missed a beat.
the carb on them works on a road bikes carb i think from memory. vacumn lifts the slide so they dont have the poke to lift the front wheel unless you are already moving at a fair clip.
i put a bigger header pipe on as the 300 comes with the same size as the 250 ( not sure if they still do)
i put a jd jetting kit in it and changed the springs to suit and i found that bike to be a good time trail bike.
also put a bash plate on it and changed the plasticine type handle bars to something decent.

WR250 hands down :woohoo: the KLX does not even come close to the performance and handling of the WR, get an older one maybe, wouldnt worry about electric start, its only a 250.. too easy once you get the hang of it, plenty of aftermarket go - fast goodies for it also should you decide to fine tune it to suit.

would definitely go for the 250, rode a wr recently and thought it was really good.

You should add a switch so you can switch between the modes.

I don't think the 250EXCF is in the equation for the OP.

For myself? Yeah I've considered it. I'm either going to wait till late this year to get a 2012.. or if I can find an ex-demo 250EXCF I'll go with that for the time being. You ridden one?

need to turn the ignition off to do that cos its the CDI looks for an earth to determine which map to use, but you can switch them.

I missed this im 180cm and 85kg so not to big for the 250, mmmm 450 would be nice but think i will just ease myself back into the riding rather than arive full noise.:shit:
