Hi everyone, thanks for all your help and support so far :Punk:

I am sitting my practical test on saturday and there is one thing I need to buy before then.

Gloves.

Any recommendations of brands etc and possible shops to buy them from in Wellington?

I've got some technic chicane's (I think that's the name) for around $80 which a really nice gloves and allow you to feel still through them. I'm sure most bike shops down your way will have them or something similar .

I have some Orina Goretex gloves!.
BLOODY GOOD!
Leaving 7am each morning, its bloody cold, but could be much worse. But at that time, nothing much (other than heated grips) will keep your hands totally warm.
Proven waterproof, Comfy.
They are a little bulky, but not too bad.
I recomend them.
$89.95 will be around the price your looking at.

I just got some Nordic gloves to replace my ageing no-namers (damn things used to dye my hands black every time they got even slightly wet) and they are comfortable, warm and waterproof. Very nice for $75. (Got mine from Cycletreads)

Personally I go for something with a nice thin palm (though not so thing that it'll be worn in a year), to make sure that the gloves maintain plenty of feel. Better to get cold hands than to feel like you're riding a cloud...no feel through the bars ain't cool.

I don't think you'll get these under 100 bucks, but they're still awesome

They only look awesome....... could get rather hot during a slide...... you're better off geting a set of Spool gloves or something......remember to wear your sleeves OVER your gloves.....and for about 30 you can buy a set of inner gloves for those really freezing longer trips......

Motomail used to have a couple of pair of Spidi top-of-the-line kangaroo hide gloves that were around $600. I used to try them on each time I was up there. Never did buy them, but boy they felt good.

Jimdaworm: let us know what gloves you end up buying, and good luck with the test!

and once again my newness shows through. Why do you say sleeves over gloves? I would have thought gloves over sleeves would be better, by making the overlapping part face away from the wind you deny the wind a path up your arms.
As for the shiny gloves, I like this varient better.

Tis not the wind you are wanting to keep out, but the (rain) water.

Gloves over sleeves, rain runs down your arms and the glove mouth makes a nice funnel to take it into the inside of your gloves. Sleeves over gloves and the rain runs down your arms over the OUTSIDE of the gloves. Nice dry hands.

Fasten the wrist fastening thingies on your jacket and you won't get rain up the sleeve. Or wind. Of course there is a point to beware of. If you fasten your gear up really wind tight, then fart - well let's just say Michelin Man (not really, this is a p/t)

yep, water found their way into mine yesterday in wet windy conditions. I need to figure out how to get the sleeves over the gloves, because it won't at the moment, which will probably mean gloves, jacket.

Odd feeling having your gloves get wet from the top slowly. First the cuff and I think, ah just a drop of water. The the whole wrist: huh? something going on here. Palm: oh damn the water is getting in real good. Thumb: well, it'll be a minute and then all my fingers will be wet. All Fingers: yep, thought so...

I got some Orina Gortex ones :) They look good but only time will tell. They had 129.95 on them but I mentioned the fact I had been told they were around $100 and that I only had a hundred to spend and they said somthing about they were on special but not now but they would sell them to me for $100

Yup wot the wise man says......

Also the raised funnel like area around your wrists on gloves forms a bottle neck when your sleeves are over your gloves...... that keeps the rain water out and the wind out...

great pic, but how do you get said narrow sleeves over said gloves that are thick??

gotta find the easiest way tho, slowly feeling your glove fill up is not that fun.

Cuffs not adjustable ? And I prefer gauntlets where the glove comes well up your arm.

Hmm.... I thought most jackets come with adjustable cuffs....

Put your gloves on first before you put on your jacket and then slide them through the sleeves.

Yep, they are elastic, and have a velcro section, but even with that loose, it can't get over the wrists of the Nordic gloves. The gloves must be a bit thicker than usual.

Have to play a bit...

Got mine at Red Barons $89. Second pair. 1st pair lasted three winters.
Current pair kept pinkies dry for three hunded kms in driving rain. They were wet through by 400km from taking them off at every stop.
Hands were still warm 100 km later.
Nuff said.

If you have got leathers the chances are you can't put your gloves on first. What I do is if it is a reasonable amount of rain and I'm going further than round town I'll put all my gear on and put over trousers and a waterproof jacket ontop. Warning don't put too many clothes underneath as you will just cook, but it is a sure way to stay dry.
