New bike. First ride!

Okay, decided to learn on an easier bike. So got me a cute little Scorpio. :yes:

Sooooooo much easier. Flat footed, easy clutch, throttle not twitchy...yay.

Wheeled the wee thing down to the local carpark and put my first half a kilometre on it. Basically round the building the carpark is based around getting my balance and unlearning the newbie death grip. 40 mins of practice until I began to lose concentration and the traffic began to pick up.

Almost keeled over from dehydration and my poor helmet is back in the airing cupboard drying off. But, yay! :scooter:

That's an excellent choice. You'll build confidence quickly on a nimble light machine like the Scorpio.

You are doing the right thing. Small, short ventures out. You'll find as you learn balance, the slow speed stuff becomes easier. As your speed increases, the centrifugal force of the wheels spinning keeps the bike upright by itself, therefore it doesn't need you to hold the bars to keep it going

Re slow speed - it's something that needs constant practice to become good at it. I got a bit of a learn yesterday with the police training.... now that is slow riding! I'm heading back to the car park to practice the lean out technique more.

Yes, slow speed is kinda my thing at the moment. :laugh:

But still, a much better first ride. Don't mind the slow riding too much actually. But with a bigger, heavier bike it's probably more of an issue. Especially those police bikes with all the extras clipped on them. I remember seeing the original traffic cops doing a perfect slow speed display when I was a kid. True skill.

Scorpio's a great wee bike to learn on, and I still find her fun enough that I would be reluctant to let her go and move up to a bigger bike!

Hey, I saw your old KLX in the Yamaha shop today :) Small world. The guy there told me it was lowered and had a lady owner...Joined the dots. I'm shopping for a scorpio at the moment as a first road bike :) Think you'll return to dirt some day?

Yeah, I want to get into the dirt biking too. And the KLX is such a cool bike. :crybaby: I kinda miss looking at it. But not a learners bike, soooo.....

Maybe they won't sell it before I'm all trained up on the Scorpio and ready for the next challenge. :scooter:

I started on a XV250, (cruiser)... in a carpark, then on my road, then down the road from there, then the local area, now I venture everywhere on a 650. My point your doing the right thing, confidence is boosted by little spurts of learning.

Goodonyer! You couldn't get a better wee bike than the Scorpio. I think they are going to be a classic along the lines of the venerable GN250. I'll never forget my first rides on my Mum's BSA Bantam and I still love that bike! :love:

Yeah, it's a cute bike alright. One more overnight to a couple days riding freedom. Hope the weather is a bit cooler.

Great to hear you have a bike you're comfortable on! I am learning on a bike that I felt was too big at first, and although I'm used to it now, in fact it sometimes feels too small, I often wonder what my progress would have been if I had had a bike that was a more comfortable size to start with..
