What is the deal with using number 1 if you aren't winning anymore?
Say Lorenzo goes bad this year and hardly ever wins can he keep his 1??

i always understood it (dont know why) that 1,2,3 are for current champions. So you have your real race number that you revert back to.

Usually 1-10 are reserved. You have to earn those ones. But once you do you can use that number until the official end of the season, at which point you revert back to whatever number you want/get/had/whatever.
There's no rule saying you have to use them if you earn them either. Rossi usually uses 46 whether he's won the championship or not.

From my defective memory, Rossi, Hayden and Stoner all kept their numbers when they were champions, and there was no number 1 on the grid that year.
My personal view is that if you win, and you're riding next year to defend your championship, you should be mandated to use the number 1 plate.

Hayden and Stoner both used the number one mate.

Lorenzo apparently thought hard about it as the last few No.1 racers have not backed it up the following year eg Hayden and Stoner (KR Junior?, Criville? Doohan?...) But he got his new JL initials to look like 1 ...
