I was riding along past Kaiaua on Saturday morning, when I came across a buch of cyclists, there would of been about forty in total.

Now, I all ways try to give them plenty of room as I past. There was a slight problem on saturday, they were riding 6 x abreast. Four in my lane, and two over the centre line and in the other lane. Yes it was a long strait, and they would of had plenty of time to move over in case a car did eventuate.

Thing was I couldnt get past, with out running the risk of hitting one, or hugging the ditch. I tooted and eventually they moved in to one lane, still had to cross the centre line to get past them though.

After all the media attention about cyclists of late , you would think they would do there best to at least stay only two a breast, or single file. They bleat on, on how we have to share the road etc, bloody plonkers.....any way thats my rant over....as you were.

Out of the 1.2 million cyclists in NZ it stands to reason that there will be some who just dont give a shit....ever!.... motorcyclists/car drivers are not exempt form this natural human phenomenon to 'not give a shit'. Six wide is fucken rediculous.
Raising you visor and giving them a mouthful would have been a watse of breath.

I cycle, although not in a riding group and I'm sure that the majority of these "pack cyclists" don't have a bicycle as their main form of transport. What I want to know is given most of them drive a car or motorcycle, how come that they completely take leave of their senses when they're in a pack with respect to safe riding?

Great thread Roger - it's a big problem on the Coro Peninsula with organised cycle rides, made even worse by the narrow, twisty roads.

I've had a similar experience out the back of Featherston, except when I tooted to signal I was coming through, several bikes decided that it was the right time to overtake and pulled out in front of me.......muppets.

Couldnt agree more, they seem to have a pack mentality, as if F### you we own the road. Really annoyed me on saturday. I mean come on 6 across......

I do bunch ride and there are some bunches that I don't go with due to the size / idiot quotient...I'm sure some of these weekend warriors have a fantasy Tour de France highlights reel going in their heads or something.

On a similar note though, I was totally carved up by a Subaru Legacy wagon with bike racks on the roof the other day...probably one of the same idiots.

I used to road race treadlies and it was the most brutally demanding sport I've ever experienced. If you're under pressure in the bunch you're whole world shrinks down to staying in the draft of the guy in front and sufferring to the nth degree. There's no spare brain cells available to take care of anything else. So approach with caution

Rode home from Taupo yesterday...heaps of cars etc carrying pushies. Must have been some event over the w/e? Anyway, of all the vehicles we came up behind, many pulled over (and got a thumbs-up for their consideration!!) but not a single one of said treadley carriers did.
In fact, one we met just before the start of a passing lane. Mid-size truck, treadley fucker, and us. Plenty of vehicles heading the other way too, so a quick ignore of the yellows was not in order. Do you think treadley fucker could have let us go before doing their own passing? Took half the length of the passing lane too. That one got a different digit held up....

Dunno... I see it a bit differently. I can pass in more places than they can (not counting traffic going the other way) whereas its much harder for cars... so to a certain degree, I don't mind them using the lane to pass?

That said, do it at 80-90kph, and yeah... :angry2:

I would have said "fuck it!" and gone up between them. Or right on the yellows. Maybe. But not loaded up with gear and pillion.
They were doing maybe 90kph, the only reason they actually passed the truck was it slowed down on the hill...

Here's a funny contradiction to the other thread:

From: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/4653116/Community-service-for-cyclists-deaths

"King had been driving on the Morrinsville-Walton Rd at about 9am when she collided with a group of cyclists travelling in the opposite direction.

The riders were travelling in a group of 10."

Wonder what else happened there.

The government should make it illegal for cyclists to ride 2 or more abreast. ....
It is already illegal to ride more than 2 abreast, and it is illegal to ride 2 abreast if that causes an obstruction to other traffic. So no law change needed, just enforcement of the current law to the same extent that speeding laws are enforced.

What I do in a old MG I own is..... as I come up behind them I push the brake pedal hard and the car locks up a rear inside wheel. The plonkers move dam quick when they hear a car skidding behind them.

I have posted these pics before, but I had to wait for miles behind these morons..... The ute has ABS so I can't lock up a single wheel.

Blocking the road going up hill, blocking the road going down hill. Blocking the road on the wrong side of the road (Darwin Award). I just left these fuckwits do their own thing, they were just too stupid to survive. They are only worth 100 hours comunity service now days.

About a month ago me and Mrs Woodman got in the car to go to town, and just down the road from home we noticed some elderly men in hivis vest sitting on chairs at a few intersections. We concluded that there must be some sort of event on round our place.(clever aye)
On the way back we had trouble getting to our steet and eventually found a way, but at the bottom of a hill a marshall (for want of a better name) noticed us in the car and came running over in a panic and told us to stop where we were because a bunch of cyclists was coming round the corner and down the hill. We waited a wee while and this big bunch came hairing round the corner and down the hill on the wrong side of the road followed by a motorcycle who beeped to the marshall as he passed, who then said we could proceed, which we did only to be almost tee boned by 2 cyclists at the intersection.
They are a bunch of arrogant pricks IMHO, firstly no one in the suburb knew that there was a race on. We were basically blocked in. Why could they not inform the residents?
Secondly,the marshalls were useless
Thirdly, how come they can have a race on an open road/ street network, and ride on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic. The port nelson motorcycle races had to change the track to a more dangerous option because of noise. Double standards here me thinks.

i could go on.

you have a point. There are some roads that are just dangerous for cyclists to ride on, so they should be banned from riding on them. The 2 abreast rule should be canned - there is no need to have a chat to your mates while you're riding.

I find a really good way to fuck them off is overtake and then slow right down. Going down hill it means they ,miss out on their thrill, but going uphill really does their heads in - if you slow down to a crawl and stop they lose all momentum and it's bloody hard to get back on 2 wheels on a steep hill. They also hate it when I ride beside them in first gear - drowns out their conversation.

BTW I am also a cyclist, but ride solo and around town only.

Im not god mate and cannot be bothered even thinking about it to be honest.

All I know is they are dangerous to them selves and a Total pain to the drivers/riders to be riding the way most do, and trying to police them and the 2 abreast rule is near on impossible as there is to much scum out there for the police to deal with now ( Not on the roads, P drugs granny bashers etc)

I don't think you're a prick at all, but I would say this (my only serious contribution to this topic by the way, all piss taking aside): all this talk of "BAN THEM" and "run them off the road" and "they're a menace" comes from an attitude that drivers and motorcycle riders are inherently superior to other road users. That fragmentation, that slicing ever thinner mentality is what gets us the ACC funding levy fuckup - from "we're all in this together, its a public good so requires public funding" to "oh, well I only drive 500 k's a year in my nana car to the shops and back so I shouldnt have to pay".

My point is that the underlying divide and conquer mentality is incorrect. We, the citizens of this country, pay for our roads (and so much else of our infrastructure), so we all get to use it. If you want to drive your car, ride your bike, or ride your motorbike, thats all good, thats what its for. As soon as one user group starts singling out another, where does that leave us all? Up shit creek. It is exactly the same argument that car drivers and the LTSA propaganda ministry otherwise known as the AA use "Motorcycles shouldnt be allowed on our roads: they go too fast and when they crash they cost so much money, plus they might be enjoying themselves and we can't be having that in NewfuckingZealistan"

See what I'm saying? Playing the blame game is wrong, and pointless because it will come and bite you in the ass.

My recipe for fixing things:

Make a driver's licence harder to get (like in Chermany) and easier to lose (zero BAC, two strikes and you're out)

tax ACC where you are guaranteed to pay more if you use more: that's right, at the petrol pump.

Reverse the onus of proof: in Holland, if a car hits a cyclist, it is automatically presumed to be the car driver's fault, unless they can establish otherwise.

Abolish speed limits. All of them.

Enforce our existing rules regarding Careless, Reckless and Dangerous driving. Thats right folks, the myth that "speed kills" is laid to rest. What kills? Fuckwitism, not driving for the conditions, being pissed or stoned or distracted. That can happen at 49 or 99, or 51 or 101.

De amalgamate the Pleece and traffic pleece (not so sure about that because I dislike creating more bureaucracy)

Abolish infingement notices, and instant fines: every ticket gets you a Court appearance, and every one has the possibility of "do not pass go, do not collect $200, hand your licence to the bailiff and walk home". My view of infringement notices and instant fines is that they are regarded like reverse Lotto tickets: every time you ride, you play lotto, but sometimes you get a losing ticket. But only sometimes. and the odds are good enough that you think "fuck it, Ima go for it".

Here endeth the lesson. Sorry thats a bit of a rant.

My 2cents...

I like cyclists.....they generally follow the rules as well as the rest of us.
But every now and then you do get a pack of them all spandexed up and thinking they own the road (port hills!...their everywhere but left!).....but thats their call, as it is MY call to snicker evilly...drop a gear and watch the "scatter" effect that a big block V-Twin with termignonis can initiate....hilarious!
No speeding involved (its a guzzi..."Mostly" all talk lol) or endangering anyone, just a bit o fun and clear roads ensured.

Court appearances costs US the TAX payers more money

Yea they may own cars etc and a house, ( They are already recieving the same as us for there buck) so how does this help pay for the police actions you speak about?)
