View Full Version : Why bikers hate cage drivers

Riding my zxr out to my mates place, along a twisty road, heaps of dips, hills, and good corners. I know the road like the back of my hand, so wasnt exactly going slow, but always swung wide on the corners to give plenty of room for oncoming traffic. Reached a hill climb section, which has a fairly tight right hand bend downhill from the crest. Over the crest at 100ish kmh and theres a f**king grey terrano in MY lane, leaving nowhere to go. Bike left the road, into a small grassy ditch, and I was thown six feet in the air and landed HARD on the road. I blacked out on impact for a couple seconds, when I came too I was still tumbling head over heels down hill. Came to a stop at the bottom of the hill more than 50m from the crash sight.
Stood up and looked for the terrano, the WANKER DIDNT EVEN STOP! Looked myself over, my right index finger was twisted at an unsightly angle, badly broken. My jacket and helmet saved my arse for the most part, but the jacket had hitched up at some point during the tumble and I had cuts, bruises and general road rash all over my lower back. My jeans were ripped and my knee had a large gash, see the bone pretty clearly and my shoe was steadily filling with blood. Ripped a section off my tshirt and tightly bound my knee to stem the flow, then pulled my phone out to ring the cops. It was smashed. With no other cars or houses near, I walked back up the hill to my bike, lying on its side in the grassy ditch. Lifted it up for inspection, it came off pretty well really, cracked screen, front fairing, side fairing, and broken exhaust mount, but that was it.
Let it stand and cool down for a few minutes (it was bloody hot!) and waited for another car to come along. With no other traffic, I had to get on the bike, and roll start it down the hill. It fired to life pretty easily, and I limped the last 3k to my mates, where he drove me to ANE to get my knee stitched up.
So that was yesterday afternoon, im FUCKING SPEWING, I lost my job recently and couldnt afford to continue insurance payments, so I'll have to foot the bill myself. That cunt could have killed me, Bloody well hope the cops track him down and kick his arse, but thats pretty unlikely seeing I didnt get a rego, or see the driver, all happened much too fast.
Glad it wasnt worse!

My sympathy. Had a cager do similar on the Akatara's, but they at least left me a foot or so of seal, lucky I had practiced my lane splitting so avoided the crash.

Sorry to hear that. I assume you've given the Police as full a description of the vehicle as you can and the accident site?
You're alive and upright so that's great! It definitely could have been a lot worse!

What did you learn from this?
That's it's not a great idea to go over blind crests at 100ish kmh on a road you know like the back of your hand while you're not exactly going slow??
Nah that would be to much to expect

His safety margin needs to be bigger, there are always going to be other idiots on the road and unfortunately we've got no idea as to when we will come across them.

What did you learn from this?
I learnt...
1) ATGATT aint such a bad idea
2) Speed, even on roads you know extremely well, isn't exactly clever
3) If you are going to go fast, make sure your insurance is still there
4) Other road users may not stick to the rules of the road.
Hopefully the OP heals up fast.

I don't want to rub salt into your wounds and I'm certainly not saying it could never happen to me but....
you crested a hill (which presumably you couldn't see over) at a 100kph and couldn't stop in time to avoid this. I think you're lucky to have come out of this relatively undamaged and not hurt some innocent party in the process. No, the Terrano driver wasn't an innocent party, but there could as easily have been some party legitimately occupying that same road space.
All the best for a speedy recovery.

Hey b1g-fuLLa - Glad you lived to tell the tale.
You need to adjust your style so that this doesn't happen to you again.
ATGATT - means riding pants that are attached to your jacket that will prevent road-rash.
This story tells us why you hate some cagers, but not all. There are some good ones out there too.
Heal fast and good luck with the repairs.

14th February 2011, 14:30
Plus 1 for the ATGATT comment.
After Mrs Berg went down on a diesel slick dropped by a 4x4 turning in front of us we were both amazed at the lack of injury she suffered. Her gear protected her superbly with only minor bruises resulting.

Getting on the bike - you're a tougher man than me. I probably would have sat by the roadside whimpering.
Anyway - bloody good job it wasn't a head on. I know you said you are not employed - but thought of asking for some family / friends to shout you a track day or two? Of course you need to heal up, but if you want to clip it along - maybe a track would be a good place for it.
Just goes to show you always need to have an escape route and too expect the unexpected.
If we are honest with ourselves, I don't think every rider thinks another car will be going head on on each and every bend.
The good thing about roads you know well - is anticipating where drivers might be on the wrong side of the road trying to overtake etc... and be extra cautious in those places.
Heal up. Don't worry about the bike. Yeah - I know, money and it is your bike smashed up - but it can be fixed.

hope you heal up fast dude.
I agree with what everyone else has said about the 100ish ks over a creast of a blind hill. You never no what is on the other side yes the teranno was in your space but it could of been a kid on a bike or a dog to so while the teranno driver was in the wrong there are things to be learnt. I hope that they didn't relise that they had caused an accidant because not stopping after a motorcycle had just run off the road and down a bank is a cowardly thing to do.
Hope you can heal up so you can get a new job so you can fix the bike and get back out there.

That aside; by your own admission you were riding hard and fast! You may well think you know a road like the back of your hand, however, you never know what's on it or what's coming the other way.

What did you learn from this?
There's a reason the road code says you need to be able to stop in less than half the distance of clear road you can see ahead. (Yes 'of course' I always ride that way ... )

Glad you are Ok, sad about the job and the insurance but better luck next time aye.
Amazed at the responses in this thread.
Yes the car/SUV was where it shouldn't be.
But, while you didn't have all the escape routes sorted you at least managed the damage control well enough to come out alive.
Yes 100 KPH over a cresting corner isn't a good idea on the open road, why? well what happened?
Thats why.

prolly didnt even know he had caused an accident
:shit:Worrying both ways really, either he saw the bike and cared so little or was so scared he scarpered potentially leaving a rider to die, or s/he was approaching a crest on the wrong side of the road not looking... dunno which is worse actually...
Personally I do not hate "cagers" (I love them, fried or boiled), but seriously you cannot say all car drvers are the same, there are crazy ones, stupid ones and good ones, just like riders really... generalising just adds to "the biker image"

you may well know the road likle the back of your hand, but you NEVER know whats round the next corner or crest of the hill.
going hard and fast is for the racetrack, where the variables are far less, and therefore its safer to go fast.
lesson learned,get well soon:yes:

Fuckin harsh first lesson by any standards but at least there's nothing permanent.
Most people (not just car drivers) are coward arseholes and when push comes to shove, will only look out for no1.
I don't subscribe to ATGATT but when not wearing decent kit, it's best to ride like your grandmother is on the pillion seat.
It's part of biking I'm afraid. No point getting shitty about who's at fault as your car driving family/mates won't want to hear it and you can't argue a point after going SPLAT
You on that tango orange thingie wot screams up and down Stanley Avenue at 17000rpm??

Only if it is an unlaned road. As the OP says the cage was "in my lane" you have presume it was a laned road, in which case you have to travel at such a speed as to be able to stop within the distance of clear road. With the cager coming towards him even traveling legally he was fucked unless the cager also reacted, which OP's story says they didn't.
Was 100K over a hill on a creating corner appropriate? really depend on if he could have stopped in the clear road ahead. Does sound like the cager didn't give him that option.
BUT the main issue is the not stopping. No arguments there. The cager was wrong.

Agreed but I always remember a comment made during my Defensive Driving course some 30 years ago. "Yes the other guy might be at fault but there's no point in being 'dead right' "

+1 to that.
In an ideal world we would all be riding around with cameras on our bikes and helmets so assholes like this Terranosarus driver can't get away with this shit. I bet ACC will write this one up as a single bike looses control accident cause they don't have any evidence and CBF looking into it any further.

Sorry to hear about your crash, good to see you are on the mend.
The problem with 'cages' it that they are a tonne of steel moving along the roads at 80 Plus kmph, and at the same time used as places to phone from, chat, mobile stereos, makeup mirrors, dining rooms etc.
Driver focus is far less than a motorcycle.

my advice?, first, stop and ask yourself what you can learn from the whole thing. sometimes even if YO are doing everything right, you can still learn.
After you have figured out what you could have done differently, THEN go after the cunt. If he denies he was there, the cops won't bother pursuing it unless you are sure of the rego.

Glad to hear you survived - and well enough to vent on the internet.
Not sure whether you expected sympathy, tea and bikkies or just wanted to let us know what pricks some car drivers can be. Most of us know that. Just like some of us know motorcyclists can be pricks on the road too.
Have to say the fact that he didn't stop suggests that perhaps he didn't realise he'd caused you to run off the road and crash; but if so it would have to be one of the worse smidsy cases. If he (and I use "he" generically) did realise what he caused then he deserves to have the book thrown at him for not stopping to assist.
I wonder though how many drivers have fumed "f@cking motorcyclists, riding like idiots, carving up the lanes, on my side of the road...' etc. I know HE was on your side in this case but just another reason to ride like you don't know what's ahead over the rise or around the corner.
Hope you use your healing time to take stock and consider if your enjoyment on public roads in that manner is actually worth it for the 1% of the time it all turns to shite.
