View Full Version : Bring in "tent city"

This is a common problem & still no-one has addressed it, this should NOT be a true statement, yet time & time again it is.
Two young men told a judge that they reoffended because their life is better behind bars.
Bring in 'tent city' make prison life shit, make people NEVER want to return!
A couple of pics from the already established 'tent city'

long time ago that where I first saw tent city  but the Stuff article is what brought this about, it is quite common for people in NZ to commit crimes purely for the reason of returning to their 3 star (albeit restricted) accommodation this really needs to be stopped & I quite like 'tent city' as the way to do it

I agree with you as my opinions regarding punishment for some crimes tend to be a little on the biblical side... However - its a pretty complicated problem. People in prison for a long time are really going to struggle to get going again so often, no matter how shitty it is, prison IS the only option.
On the other hand - some people should just be exterminated

A nice tent city on the Desert road would be perfect.
Toasty warm in summer and relaxingly cool in winter.
The new Auckland jail is a fucking hotel. Sky tv in each cell ffs!

Mum went there once... (seemed to enjoy it as well:blink:).

in my idea tent city would only be for "buffering" (for want of a better word) our legal system isn't always accurate or fair so we can't just go round executing punishments outright. If they are repeat offenders & thus without doubt criminals, punishments will be given out fitting the crime. PC people might not like my ideas on this neither (but then they probably think tent city is "too harsh" too)

ive always thought we should let somewhere like Cambodia look after our hardened repeat offenders.
pay them maybe $1000 (rough guess) per prisoner per year
benefits
save a fortune
people will not reoffend
help a 3rd world country
Cons
not PC

A way to help pay for the prisons would be to set up a Big Brother scenario. Just put cameras everywhere and televise it. It can have a dedicated channel even....
When there's shit on t.v, which is all the time you can flick over and see what N.Zs finest are up to. Every cell, every room a camera.

My idea was similar but put them on an island & film with massive $$$ pay-per-veiw subscriptions and there aint no rules on the island 'cept you gotta stay there!.
They want to go round killing/beating people will now they can legally 'till death (which probably wouldn't be far away).

Well fuck me.
The Prison system is a joke in NZ. And its even a bigger joke than I expected.
No wonder we have a problem with reoffenders.
Now I really think we should start killing them off. But we need to ease the idea into it.
I've got it, a lottery.
Every month 1 prisoner is randomly chosen and killed off. So they have have their good lives in prison, but the "lotto" will be like a dark cloud hanging over them.
Who's next? Who knows....

Nope the one in Arizona with the lowest re-offender rate & "America's Toughest Sheriff: Joe Arpaio"
"recidivism rate of about 16% at Tent City vs. the national average of 85%"

You mean the guy who's under investigation by the DOJ, FBI, and a federal grand jury for numerous civil rights violations, and misuse of power?.. The guy who has misspent up to $80million in taxpayer money on crap including investigating political rivals, a trip to Alaskan fishing resorts for his deputies, and trips to Disneyland?
He also ran a police department where about 75% of cases declared cleared without being resolved were done so without proper investigation, with a 15% arrest rate, including 3 rapes of underage girls for the reasons that "a suspect declined to come in for questioning", "a mother did not want to pursue the investigation", and in one case before DNA had even been processed.
And as far as his actual prisons, according to a 98 study that he commissioned, there was no significant difference in recidivism of prisoners between when he was in charge and when his predecessor was.
The guy has also been ordered by the 9th circuit court of appeals to fix the conditions in his jail, as inmates (including those who are pre-trial and haven't even been convicted of anything) have been fed moldy, rotten, and contaminated food, denied treatment for serious health conditions, and generally not accorded even basic human rights.
He's also cost his state at least $43 million in wrongful death and injury claims from those poor conditions.
Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy enough for prison conditions to be made a bit more basic, but emulating a scumbag like Joe Arpaio, and denying inmates basic human rights isn't the answer to reducing crime.
If you want to get a little more of an idea about how much of a crooked asshole this guy is, there's further reading here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maricopa_County_Sheriff%27s_Office_controversies#J oe_Arpaio) and here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio#Controversies).

NZ believes in rehabilitation of offenders. You rehabilitate by educating them.
The idea is that educating them makes them more mature (as they 'discover' that other people feel pain etc) and mature people don't kill. This is derived from a theory that says that murder is basically an adult's tantrum or revenge and that when they mature emotionally this "kill-kill-kill" reaction disappears.
The problem is that the pissed-off public wants retribution but someone who's being punished severely isn't going to be receptive to education.
Would you prefer criminals leaving jail punished or less likely to re-offend?
* Also, I think William Weld (a former governor of Massachusetts) was the one who was all about punishment-only prisons. Recidivism rates were so high that his successor had to reverse those policies.
** I read most of this is some sort of journal once, I'm no expert in this area

Fair enough, sorry for the rant, I've read of the guy before, and he really is a corrupt weasel who seems to have pretty much the opposite opinion of most justice systems, and believe it better that 99 innocent men are jailed or executed than one guilty man go free, and that those who break any law, no matter how minor, should no longer be afforded basic human rights.

I tend to agree, and I've also read several articles that link longer sentences and harsher treatment of prisoners with increased recidivism rates, but ultimately it seems the vast majority are more concerned with seeing criminals suffer than seeing them rehabilitated, with the added complication that a fairly large percentage of criminals will re-offend no matter what.

but how many of the these clowns who go through our prison system and come out the other end are actually rehabilitated human beings?
If you checked the Hastings prison link I posted, you can see that they have tennis courts, hopscotch boards:gob:, and fuck knows what other facilities!
My opinion is that prison is supposed to be a punishment for a crime. not a fuggin holiday ffs! the rehabilitation/ education can be done even when there are minimal comforts provided to them!
Rant over.
