View Full Version : Brand loyalty

Having a yarn with a mate at the boozer about bikes, and he is a die hard Japanese owner, and won't own anything other than a Jap bike, and prefers Yamaha or Suzuki but has owned all 4 brands but doubts he will ever own Euro or American, and reckons Harleys are crap and Euros are overpriced. I like all makes of bikes, but i'm pretty loyal to Triumph, and my next bike is probably a Rocket, but I'd own a Guzzi happily, an XR1200 Harley or possibly a BMW R1200 GS.
I also know people who will own anything and others who will own one brand only. I'm curious what the general consensus is.

Royal Enfield has always been my first choice. :woohoo:
I would love to own an Ural, Triumph, BSA, or Norton tho..

i have always wanted a gsxr thou and that is one of the big motovations behind getting my licence but i really like the triumph 675 daytona aswell. And i back suzuki in everything from motorcross, supercross to wsb. Ithink my loyalty will stay with suzuki and besides that we have a really good dealer in whakatane.

I'm with your mate on most aspects. The Japanese bikes have a great history for reliability, generally easier to get parts, and better priced (IMHO).

I do like honda and was thinking of getting another one, but that was until I saw the daytona 675!! so not particularly loyal, not in much of a position to be too choosy, the wallet will be a big influence on my next bike

Suzuki is my preferred manufacturer, that comes from being a 7yr old looking up to his big brothers who both rode GSX400's and RM's back in the day. Then GSXR's became my flavour after getting to go to school everyday in 3rd and 4th form on the back of my brother's friends GSXR750.
But if something else came along I wouldn't dismiss it just because it's missing those magical few letters.

It is a hard question, this brand loyalty. I love Triumphs :drool:and would own one over anything else, but, as ac3 has already said the price is a major consideration, on a low budget I have to get the best I can afford, regardless of what it says on the tank:(:weep:.
trailblazer you are right dealerships are also important when looking at a bike, but being from Waitakere that is not an issue, we don't have a single dealer left!!!!!

I'm a slut, I'll ride any floozy that's fun and cheap enough but I often dream about italian supermodels.

Right now there are brands that are better suited to me than others and some I don't like. But brands change over time and so do I (generally getting older and fatter) so I don't like ruling anything in or out as hard and fast.

Over the last month my Ducati has shared garage space with a Yamaha R1, A GSXR, and a Honda Fireblade, they look absolutely awesome together!
The only thing missing is an MV Agusta F4 312RR!!

Brand loyalty is for those who have no foresight.
I have owned a Suzuki/Yamaha/Triumph/Honda...my next bike will either be a Buell/XR1200 or a Speed triple, and personally, I dont care which one I end up with.

Yes!.....yes you would
I have owned japs, english and fixed american lol
For me...guzzi is just practical, and not at all unreliable or costly to own & run.
I use "PhatGirl" for daily transport all year round.....and she just keeps on ticking...and thumping...and knocking.... lol
As for brand loyalty....Love me Guzzi, but there are so many great bikes out there that suit everyones personal tastes and needs.
Love what you have....lust after what you want.

funny how (for bikes) no one has picked the "loyal to one brand" option at the top(yet anyway), but for cars you seem to get that whole Holden/Ford thing where they are so fucking loyal, they wouldn't be seen dead in the opposition (unless maybe it was a Ford Hearse )

Bollox! loyalty to brand shows you stand for something and not insipidally following fashion or the latest fad.
I'm loyal to Norton's and two strokes.(and would trade the gixxer in seconds for either one of em)

When I first started this life consuming hobby I would have argued that Yamaha was the shiz and anyone that rode anything else was deluded at best, stupid at worst. Harley riders should be shot and BMW riders were rich and sad.
Right, having established that I was a major idiot when I was young, I am now proud to say I will ride anything I fancy and can see merit in just about any brand of bike.
Nothing is out of the equation and I have owned 4 Harleys and 3 BMW's and all Jap makes. I still have some favourites but I'm up for trying anything. :scooter:

11 suzuki's, 3 honda's and 1 yamaha. Wouldn't rule out a kwack if they ever produce a decent 1000cc+ v twin sports bike.
As others have said, will only ever consider jap bikes purely for reliability, parts availability and price.

I hear you. One of the reasons I am loyal to Triumph is because they're a privately owned company, not a massive global consortium, or a division of VW, Daewoo Heavy industries or Sony. They are 100% owned by the man who founded the company in the mid 80s. I understand that he's less interested in all out profit (he's made a brazillian dollars from Triumph already) than in producing bikes that are kind of special and invoke passion.
When they built a power cruiser, it was a 2.3l triple. Their mid range sports bike is a 675 triple and they don't have an ILF litre superbike. And for all the fact that they're different and quirky, they're also superbly designed bikes that are at least as good, and often better, than the competition, and at least as reliable as the Jap bikes. Actually, most bikes are as reliable as jap bikes these days.
And I like Guzzi because I had a brilliant relationship with a Le Mans over several years and many kms, and like Triumphs, they're different. I like things that are a little different and have never been any good at fitting in. I had a great run and some awesome times on the UJMs I owned back in the 80s and early 90s, but they were functional and efficient machines, whereas most of my Trumpies and my Guzzi were bikes that inspired passion.

No he hasn't. He's a property developer. He started with a Brazilian dollars. Triumph is a profitable sideline, but profitable in a way that allows reinvestment in the company and thoughtful development of the product line, not massive pay outs to shareholders.

Yes and no. He started as a plasterer and became a successful property developer, and wasn't even all that interested in bikes when he started Triumph. He was very wealthy, but invested most of his fortune in rebuilding Triumph. Over the last couple of years he has lost money on his property and his business holdings have been propped up by Triumph sales, which were up 29% in 2009 (not sure what they were last year).

I like Ike (Harleys). Don't get Victory. Would love a BMW GS1200 someday. Would not ever get another new Triumph after Truimph NZ ripped me off (WANKERS) but they are great bikes. I am actually a bit of a snob and won't own a Jap vehicle. I would love a 1940ish WLA Army Harley or a WW2 BSA.

Everything is disposable. Only dogs are loyal. And that shit song by Dave Dobbyn.
My first three bikes were Kawasaki's and I thought that was my brand, then Yamaha, then Honda and after that Suzuki. Next will be a Triumph. It's only metal. If you are totally brand loyal there is a good chance you will miss out on something you might have enjoyed.
So I voted for the first one.
