G'day all, so today was my first official day from leaving my block and going to show my NEW 7 day old bike off to my inlaws. I pull into the drive and the bike just died.
Head light not turning on and the engine stalled. When trying to restart it just wouldn't click over, the headlight still not coming on. The dash board still lit!?!?!?!?
I called the AA assuming it was my battery. He jumped it it started and the headlight came on, within 3 mins of idle running it just cut out again and the headlight off again while the keys are on. He said take it back to the dealer let them sort it out. He didn't seem to interested in the fact it was a bike and was unsure how to locate the battery in the first place!
He's parked in the garage now at mums until the morning. ANY IDEAS!?!?!
Ugh what a crap end to my first most awesome day of riding. I went round and round the block for the last week, venture out and pfffffffffffffffffffff. At home now and Gutted.

I'm thinking you need a new battery. Can you get it tested?
If the battery is OK, it's either the Reg/Rec or the stator. If you got it off a dealer last week, give em a call in the morning :scooter:

if they cant get it going AA normally take it on the back of a truck to get to the bike shop of your choice

Don't get too pissed off. These things happen in life. Remember you had a lovely ride. It's not your problem it's your dealers. Phone them up, if they are any good they will come out and sort out the problem (you should have called them before the AA) If they give you any rubbish name and shame on here

It happened 9.20pm this evening i assumed calling the dealer tonight would be a waste of time, and the AA roadside came with my insurance thought may aswell use it. :) I will call first thing in the morning. Man such an awesome day, panmure roundabout whewwwww my first fear conquered today i will take this positive and hopefully learn something new in regards to my bikes mechanics.

Both my old 250s did not charge properly if you rode around in too high a gear for the speed your were doin and idle around town sucks the juice out. Had to keep revs up just a little as I was shifting at revs I would shift in car.
Can tell if its reg/rec/stator if the head lamp glows brighter when you give gas a blip.
Good luck anyhows.

That is a bummer! You just want your new bike to work.
Never mind. It's bound to be something simple to fix.

Hang in there, bikes are machines, and from time to time, something will go wrong, just get your dealer to sort it out for you, then go for a nice long ride..:)

On the headlight thing...some bikes, the headlight is always on, but only when the engine is running. This is a design feature so that the starter motor gets all the available current.
You may have a dodgy battery, but there is something else going on that is causing the engine to die. Unless you have simply stalled it?

Exactly the same thing happened when my M50, brand new, died after two weeks. Called the dealers who came out. The mechanic told me it was a dud battery. Not covered under warranty. Had to pay for them to come and pick it up and for the new battery. I was fuming

Fuck that! a brand new bike that dies after two weeks: my arse would I be paying for a new battery. No warranty bollocks!! Consumer Guarantees Act, fitness for purpose etc etc. If the dealer won't replace it, a) find a new dealer then b) Disputes Tribunal. Cost you $20 (or $50).

Pretty hard to kill a GPX. Especially one thats only a few years old! It would have to be a very dead battery to not even let the bike idle. I had a dead battery but the bike would still work with a push or jump start just wouldn't hold charge.
If it has gas then a change of battery should see it running sweet.
What juzz said about not revving it enough wouldn't really apply here as they charge the battery at 4000+ and you can't ride them under 6000 (well not happily).

Have an 07 gpx 250 myself at the mo. Headlight doesn't turn on until the bike is running. Fuel problem maybe? At least its from a dealer so you have someone to go back to!:-)

Were there any warning lights on before it died?
I had a similar thing happen with the CR only a couple of weeks ago, while I was riding it to work I noticed the battery light and the cat convertor lights were on and thought to myself that I would hook it up to the battery doctor when I got home that arvo...
Yeah right!
That arvo, when I went to start it, the headlight and dash lights were all good but it just went clickedy click click. It was the stator, turns out it was a recall item so cost me nothing but in your case I think (as already suggested) that you should be covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act.
Also, I was given a loaner bike to get home... so if you need one then ASK for one and don't take no for an answer unless they really truely don't have one available/suitable...
Hope it gets sorted for you pronto so you can get back to enjoying your ride :sunny:

Fuck that!

You were fobbed off. ask them to provide any evidence that this is the case. They won't be able to. Sharp practice at its most tedious.

Hmmm not much more to add except, least u got it from a dealer and thus have a shite show of getting it sorted within reasonable time frame. Like others have mentioned, its prob an easily fixable mechanical problem but don't let the dealer weasel out of their consumers obligations-harass their azzez if need be. i do wish ya luck in sorting it so that ya can get out there and ride.

Go back to the dealer and get your money back.
My sons ZX6R only had a week left in the 2 year warranty when the battery packed it in, the battery was replaced free of charge.
Told them to claim it either on the bikes warranty or the batteries

Good idea but that was two years ago !! The same dealer, when putting on new rear tyre, forgot to do the nut thing up that keeps the back brakes working. Didn't know until riding down a twisty road and suddenly had no rear brakes. The nut had worked its way completely to the end of the rod thing. Obviously I steer clear of that place now. Another bike shop, when replacing a tyre on a different bike put the tyre on back to front so when I went for a warrant it failed until it was turned with the tread the right way. There are two things I now know to check. !!!!

That's worthy of name and shame...and I'm in the industry and normally against it untill it's been sorted out!
