I have a 3.0 turbo diesel Super Custom. I would like to hear about other people's mileage for Hiaces as I seem to average 12l/100km.

Not many replies yet eh? :)
12L/100km :shit: My falcon towing the trailer probably doesn't use much more than that.

450km with 3ltr turbo 1KZ-TE long wheel base per tank honking along fully loaded. About 500 following the engine revs with accelerator.
High top roofs or jumbo vans use a noticeable amount more.
Long lived engines though.

I just re-read the original question and yeah I get approx 480-500km per tank fully loaded honking along on the Open road.

Tell me about it  Hence why I'm so interested in what others get

2.8 non turbo diesel LWB - av 9.9 litres/100 km over 10,000kms running air con all the time with foot to the floor a lot of the time. (it's hilly out here) - haven't run a tank dry but seems to be about 550-600 km between refills.

Hi there mate,
3.0 diesel non turbo... steady cruising not over 100kmh I will get nearly 640km out of a tank. I think it worked out to 10L/100km. Pretty good to run! As much as a small car or large motorcycle.
Just wind back the km's for ruc and they are brilliant.

I don't have a hiace but for comparison my Hyundai H100 LWB 2.5 diesel gets between 9.5 to 10L/100km pretty consistently. It seems to be closer to 9.5 on the long trips and goes out to 10 (or maybe 10.2) if I am driving around town etc. Stupid 50L tank means at max I can only get 520k per tank, although I havent run out yet.

Is it easy to wind back the odometer or is it better to disconnect the speedo cable and use a GPS as a speedo?

Just disconnect the speedo and just use rpm tach instead. If you had a GPS that refreshed speed quickly that'd be a viable option though!
Winding back the odometer is a lot more effort but when you've got $$$ in ruc overdue it's the only way.

A mate of mine said years ago he had a diesel Landcruiser and the cop jumped in the truck and made him drive to check that the speedo was working. I haven't heard of that happening to anyone else, though.
The cops must all know that people with old diesels unplug the speedo cable.

Never heard of that one!
Fucking hell they break all the time though, that's a bit harsh I would have thought. I wonder then if the bastard would go into the engine bay to investigate the cause?
What did your mate get fined?

I have heard of that happening on more than one occasion. My old flatmate had the cop tell him to drive up the road 500m and come back to check the odo clicked over. I believe the fine is $2500. Foolish to leave the speedo cable unplugged. One fine would be around 40000km of ruc

I've heard of the old "hook up a drill to the speedo cable to wind it back", but that's an old wives tale isn't it? I've heard that you'll have to run the drill for many hours just to lose a couple of kms.

Yeah it works but is very slow. You can only run the speedo backwards as similar speeds that you drive (maybe up to 150kph) so 6-7 hours per 1000km.

So it'll probably burn out the drill motor pretty quickly.

I've heard you can take the plastic gauge cluster cover off and then put a very small flathead screwdriver inbetween the digits on the odometer to wind them back, but is it really that easy?

Then you run into problems with the timing belt if you don't keep a record of your k's travelled in the manual.
5k between oil changes adds up so does the RUC with its admin charge then rego is higher, purchase price is higher.
They are an ugly shape to the wind so pushing it with a petrol engine is probably more expensive (?)

Yeah, but diesels are a lot nicer to drive than petrols. I don't see myself going back to a petrol anytime soon even if the running costs are identical.

done it, yes its easy. never tried the drill and wonder if it actually works. only thing is you can usually tell if its been done if you look closely cause the digits become a little crooked. good luck.

The analog speedos are all pretty much the same on different brands of vehicles, aren't they?

One day NZ might come into line with the rest of the world, re diesel pricing, You'd think it would be easy enough to put the road tax into the purchase price for up to 2.5 ton vehicles......
Diesel over here is about the same price as 91 give or take 5 cents....

you kidding me right? it's way cheaper. you can run a big diesel hiace for the same price as a small 1.5l petrol car if you are handy with the odometer.

I don't have any expericence with Hiaces, but as for winding back the speedo etc, my Peugeot 406 tdi is good for 5l/100km or 1200km to 60 litres of diesel (! lol), but add ruc and she not that much cheaper to run than my Falcon... instead of fucking around with the speedo I'm about to buy a second hand instrument cluster with a lower mileage showing (not hard as its done 390k), and will swap it out for WOF time. So can still keep track of mileage and speed but will take years to get to the RUC limit. Like fuck I'm paying the same tax as a 2.5 t Nissan Patrol or Isuzu light truck, govt can go and get fckd.

Yeap that's right mate.
Nice vehicle to be getting 5/100km diesel. Isn't it a real hassle to change out the dash for wof? Why don't you just use rpm for speed instead and disconnect it?
