You know what would be really cool- a teams race/event where 2riders had to ride together as a team. That way there was someone tohelp push on the worst places & to pick up the bikes.
Hmmmm maybe we could work one into a laidback trail ride???

Apart from the DR Big, there's too much mud to tell.
But as they'd be from the manufacturers they were riding the IOM TT for, I'd guess Yam, Honda, Kwakka, Suzuki...

Cool vid,
Love the homage to "on any sunday" at the end. Just like the final sequence in the original (and best) bike movie.
Love the idea of a 2 man "advenduro" - I'd be well up for that!

Fucken oath!
Team Wuckatoo will consist of Dino n me, (on Dinos BRP).
Can't think of a more delicious idea than thrashing someone else's bike, and they have to push me out of bog holes, while i'm killing their ride.

Hmmmm. I'll talk to Nordie & maybe we can get a course worked out. Could do a few laps around the forest, with the odd road section in to keep them road legal. Even a motard sectio ontheold whangamoa Rd (We'll have the videocamera set up on one very slippery corner but won't tell you which - actually no I wouldn't wishthat on anyone really)
Now all we need to find are steep loose rocky hills, muddy bits, gorsed no exit tracks, tree falled roads, sounds coool
Anyone interested in coming up or down for one?
It would of course be a 'disorganised event' with open forestry roads etc

2 options for this sort of "race".
2 people 1 bike or 2 people 2 bikes.
Actually I think that both would be about even. 2-2 would be quicker on transport sections and 2-1 quicker in the gnarly bits.
I played on a couple of sections that'd require pushing/pulling and significant lifting.
Arrows on corners and dazzle for the bits you need to "tag".
Or even a home made set of cards where at each dead end section, you take your card from the pile and the first one back with all their cards is teh winnerz.
Start point of Bottom of Steep Rd for the Steep and Middle Rd sections and then off to Mt Duppa and the Lost Highway with maybe even lifting the bikes over the ditches/rocks and onto SH6 and back...
2 people, 1 bike would be sooo cool :D

NADS & North Islanders (and that's not even mentioning the one eyes)- I reckon the chances of those piles not being "lost" or "hidden" for following riders may be quite small :devil2:- or am I just a cynical old bustard?

No def have tobe 2 different bikes. That waywe could evenhave 'factory' teams. Ilikethe idea of using parts of the xcountry in Hira as the tracks that follow the road up Bobs fern & Maitai face rd are parallel to the road in case it's too slippery for big bikes.
I was thinking fun& challenging but also big bike friendly as there are heaps of eventsfor pip squeak bikes.
Riding into a certain doom with gorse soon loses its appeal.

Bikes must weigh no less than 150kg fully fuelled, and have dot tyres fitted.
Maybe extra points or no time penalties for getting the bikes up / through the really gnarly bits, no matter how you manage to get up / through.
Yeah

Yeah
I am keen but this weight ruling would count me out. :crybaby: Can we have an "light weight" or dual sport class as well?
Do it orienteering styles. Have a topomap with a bunch of points marked, people find their own way to each of the points and can do them in any order. Routes to each point would generally be pretty obvious as they will be on roads. At each point you stamp your card with the stamp. Each point has a different stamp on a string. Have an ice cream container at each point in an obvious location so you know when you are there. No GPS's allowed.

Was thinking of the orienteering(ish) angle too.
GPS waypoints with no background maps allowed and offroad routing turned on.
Knowing you're only 50m away but there's a bluff there
That way it's much easier to set up and no having to rush around on the morning of the ride making sure everything is still in place.
Looking at the GPS track later we can see if you got them all.
If the course is set up on a DR650 with road tyres then anything should be able to get around.
2 on 2: One bike has to be over 150kg wet.
2 on 1: If bike <150kg wet then one rider has to be over 90kg wet.
No machetes/chainsaws/slashers allowed.
Bribery will be appreciated.

No I'm against orienteering events due to the obvious (Ialwaysget fricking lost- and I have had a lot of experience doing & organising orienteering events etc).
I'm going for arrows & possibly a rollchart mappish thing. An easy to find circuit. That way it's about riding & having fun.
3 categories
liteweight powderpuff boys
Men & boys - one big bike one small
Granite men- 2 big bikes.
Prize for the heaviest duo.
I DONT want it to become a race for little bikes going really fast, but an opportunity for those with real adventure bikes to have fun & be able to laugh at themselves & others. I was intending it to be in the spirit of the video.
The whole idea of the two personteams is that when it comes to the knarly stuff team work & thinking will overcome the obstacles.
Also some guys with olderbikes don'treally wantto get them damaged due to replacement plastics etc so nana line would be a kinder option.
NordieBoy
19th February 2011, 10:34
The nana lines would need signs saying "wait 5 minutes before proceeding"
A circuit up Ben Nevis would be do-able.
2 min start gaps between teams.
We could look at the tracks we've done up there on Google Earth and layout a track from that.
Staplegun, arrows...
We'll have to start planning :D
But I still like the 2 on 1, GPS orienteering idea too

If its a race, how are you going to sort all the usual BS involved with a competion event ? A Navigation event wouldn't require getting involved in that.
Have you ever looked at the ALCAN 5000 ?

Race?
No start or finish line, just a mustering area.
Navigation by arrows stapled to trees.
Al Can 5000?
Collecting beer cans just doesn't have the same appeal really.

How about a roll chart route - grass roots, DIY, lo-tech and cheap.
In some fun enduro's I 've ridden they've used the "poker hand" method to avoid racing:- at each checkpoint you randomly select a playing card. At the end of the event the rider/team with the best hand wins. No special tests needed, just need to be 'on time' between the checks. Small bikes have tight times, big bikes are given more time.
Another option is to make the times between checks unimportant - then add in challenges at 2 or 3 points along the way to score the results for those that care ie. a slow bike race, or weaving in and out of cones, or even a mini mx type special test.

KISS pricipal is best, not too complicated, but just some very challenging sections, e.g. nigh on impossible. We can bench race afterwards down t pub.

For the first one, it looks like it'd be a 2 person team multi-lap circuit with no dead ends and arrows marking the course.
Out Mt Duppa or Wairoa Gorge way.
The second one will be 2-2 and 2-1 person-bike teams with gps waypoints, orienteering style. Dead ends and maybe even river crossings, highway transport sections and everything.
Out Mt Duppa way.

Hand helds still best for geocaching. Legend HCX was ok but any with a magnetic compass are better and currently gone paperless with the map62s.
Paperless rocks, much better than carting paper or special phones/laptops etc around as well as the gps to keep the cache info on. Map62s holds all the needed info. The Dekotas and colorados do paperless too. Garmin all the way for me so far.
