After seeing the bike at the end, I cant complain about how far my panniers stick out the side....bloody ell..
At some point they must have thought about getting her a bike to split the load?

I want this bike AND this trip

well you aint gonna have no trip and no bike if you don't get off your bum and go and put the gearbox back in (notice the double negatives - I'm practising my south island speak).

they looked like they'd be great guys to ride with but I'm not so sure about the soft sand and heat. Give me lotsa bush and 20 degrees heat any day.

Everything arrived Friday. I'll go out to the furnace that I joking call a garage :sweatdrop: once the 9 x 15 yr old girls descend on us for Katherine's party (& hopefully it cools down)..:wait:

Ready here! :scooter:

Unlike Steve some of us don't have garages to get too hot so we have to work under the blazing sun...

but at least I got the following done:
new handlebars
replaced rear shock (removed slop in top bush by inserting a rolled up bit of feeler gauge....)
replaced the sheared 12mm threaded rod that braced my footpegs (some serious garking going on down below)
replaced coolant
cleaned airfilter and removed all mud from airbox....
topped up battery and charged it
lubed chain etc etc etc

now if my new pivot pegs would hurry up and turn up I could fit them and then I'd be all set to go

roll on Friday :woohoo:

Replaced (as in a new one) or refitted? And how did the top mount get sloppy, you running it with loose bolt of summat?

You can see that it has cracked along side the weld underneath then continued over the top of the frame tube. Stick weld the HPN modded frame back together  no choice tho !

I had a top shock mount bolt come loose and damage the bolt and bush eye on my Ricor shock so I threw the standard shock back on while I waited for a new bolt to come from Japan (less than 2 weeks). An 8 thou feeler gauge wrapped around the bolt in the bush eye took up all the remaining slop quite nicely so hopefully it'll hang together.

makes you wonder why they'd bother. surely you couldn't have any fun riding loaded like that. High risk of shagging something subframe related you would think.

That luggage is insane-they appear to have missed the crate of chickens to top it off though! Possibly a good argument for leaving the missus at home?

Good luck with that Bart. Make sure that they are aware of the deadline.

Got the new clutch fitted, gearbox on, & airbox on. Spent a lot of time buggerising around with trying to remove a bear from the cluth pivot. In the end I've left it there...Still works. The new one can sit on the shelf for a couple of weeks.

Tomorrow I'll put the shaft, shock etc back on & a ton of other 'stuff'.

I was surprised, but then he does ride the bike fairly vigorously. See some of this other videos.

I guess one of the disadvantages of a braced frame is that it transfers the stresses to other areas.

I probably would have arranged other transport from there, but I think Altus is connected with the HPN workshop in Sth Africa. Not too much of an issue for him. Notice he braced /tacked top area, but didn't attempt to directly fix the break. My guess is he'll gusset this back at the workshop.

Altus Pienaar. Do a search on You Tube for his videos. He rode some with Metal Jockey. I think (but could stand to be corrected) he is also Dust Devil on ADVrider.

I could not believe the amount of bags and luggage on that BMW, WOW! :gob:There must be some really strong frames and cross members underneath all of that. It looked like one of those Nepalese sherpas I saw with the tump line and all of their belongings carried on the head. I didn't see the wide load sign, nor the Pilot vehicle...:)
The red Beemer looked cool, sounded nice too. Nice video.
