View Full Version : The ride back to Aucks from Paeroa

I went down to the Battle of the Streets with a fellow biker (a less experienced L-plater), we were exhausted after the ride to Paeroa (went via Maraetae, Miranda) + all day scorching in the sun, so we opted for the easy ride back to Aucks via SH2+SH1.

After 30 mins of overheating, waiting in traffic (the other rider wasn't comfortable lane splitting) pulled over, explained I couldn't stand waiting in the traffic and I was heading back towards where we came from to go back via Miranda. Had an awesome ride back and stopped in Kaiaua for Fish + chips.

Anyone else do the same, or end up in a whole lot of traffic?

Leaving we cut west through some back roads and ended up near gordonton, then decided to go cross the river at ngaruawahia<sp> and head up that way. Did miranda and waihi on the way down. Good day :D

Did I pass you both ways? (I was on a silver/black Fireblade, the other rider was on a Red Ninja 250)

I gave a couple of bikers a "Do a U-Turn" hand gesture, but not sure if anyone picked up on it.

Before getting stuck there, we had an awesome ride out to Waihi->Whakatane->Kopu

I rode back to Wellington last night. Started off hot at 5pm, but had to layer up after dark as it got fricken COLD! And going through the Desert Road the heavens opened up and heavy rain made me wet in minutes (decided to tempt fate on that beautiful weekend and leave the wet weathers behind... I sure asked for it!). Came across a flipped truck on desert road in the rain about 8.30pm and had to wait for about 20 minutes in the rain for them to clear it. But, it was crystal clear from that point on, just cooooold. Burnt my hands with the hot grips up too high. Egg!

Took some of the back roads down and had a blast... nearly had the road to myself the whole way... AWESOME ride. Slow back to Auckland huh? Should have come south with me

What time did you get home?....
Hot day all round really, thats why I tried to start a wet t shirt comp in the pits...
We had a northland chap call in here at about 9.30pm on his way home, all he was wearing was a singlet and hoodie...gave him a coffee and news paper to shove down his front and he was on his way.

Question is Maha... did you WIN the wet t-shirt comp? I'd vote for you!

I stoppped for half and hour to have some dinner and V so got home at 11.45pm. And it certainly wasn't a slow ride home, I was a girl on a mission and I SAFELY made it home in good time :innocent:

When is it ever a slow ride for you Katie.

Glad you had a good last ride on the baby. Just wish I could have joined you up there.

Now get that house sold and let's see you out there on the R1...

(and the offer still stands....)

Yeah - i rode solo Paeroa to Martinborough last night as well. Virtually had the road to myself going South. Was a great ride apart from the wetting on the Desert road, chilling me right off (like you KP - no wets, dont need those wherre we live aye:yes:), got escorted out of Tokoroa by the 61ers, then had a great ride through to Taupo, tucked in behind a fellow rider who was cruising along at a VERY nice pace.
Vinegar Hill was just what I needed to feather my tyres nicely, then I got tired and dropped my pace, and home, when i got there, never looked so good.
I was a Paeroa virgin and loved it all, but especially the great company. Friends, and riding friends especially, are what its all about

Yep, I got really sore on the Bully and ended up tucking my feet up on the back pegs with knees up high for comfort (looked like a right dick I might mention, but it was dark - phew!). Think I'm going to thoroughly going to enjoy the new riding position one day. M50 goes on trade me tonight.. :bye: If I'm bikeless for a few months can I still be cheeky on KB?

and thanks Hawkeye.. might just be taking you up on that offer on a few rides every now and then. Feel empty already - have an interested buyer for mine already

I left him in Tokoroa on Friday afternoon waiting for you guys. I had thought about taking him toward Coro but figured you guys would cover it on Saturday. He was really looking forward to Paeroa on Sunday.

I didn't go home till next day! We ended up at prizegving at the rugby club as pit crew, then we stopped at the Waikino Hotel in the Karangahake Gorge on the way back to Waihi!

Funny as hell man! There where about 8 people left at the Waikino when the three of us rolled in! The owner was pissed as but managed to get us some drinks then we went out the back to see what was up!!
Jeepers what a diverse bunch!
one was the local drunk, old as with a huge cauliflower drinkers nose and waisted as
one was the owner pissed as with Tank top on and tats Nice guy gave us the run down on the Axes etc hangin on the walls.
one was a biker type but rode a nice SV1000 but looked like a real bearded harley rider
A Big farmer lookin guy
A chick that looked like she'd been around a bit
and another young chick that was really nice and normal compared the the rest LOL!!
And an up market, well dressed sorta guy with an english type hat on??
And the whole lot where well past it!!

So more drinks all round, the Waikino weed went round and it all got a bit out hand!
Big Marty on our crew was telling bullshit stories about how he worked at Arohata Womens Prison to the locals, you can imagine what that entailed! He never has by the way!!

Then the biker guy took the hard lookin chick home on the back of his SV with no helmet, no gear, High shoes and a thin dress to the cries of our don't do it you fools! Some of the locals even joined in but to no avail! There where to many of them for us to push the point??

Then the mandatory late night KFC! Why does POP corn chicken taste sooo good when your hammered and back to the beach house to party till I knew the traveller that had left us to go home had arrived home safely!

A great days racing! I'd never seen or heard the Briton going! That was the highlight of the day for me, ferkin awesome I thought!! Apart from we won our class on Fastest lap in the end after a couple of back markers really held up the final two laps! The old Z900 looked the part out front on the day I reckon!!

Great company Sat night, Great sunny Raceday Sunday and Sunday night man what a night with the locals!!

The ride back today was good traffic was light, radar detector only went off twice so Mr Plod had stopped bombing the area. Stayed on the main road till the Red Fox Tavern then Marinda, Clevdon When the light rain started.
But all in all better to have time to enjoy the local entertainment that night and then get to work at lunchtime next day I reckon!!!

So pleased I finally got to see and hear one of the greatest Kiwi works of art (the Britton) going!

I gave a couple of bikers a "Do a U-Turn" hand gesture, but not sure if anyone picked up on it.
Pffft, as if I would listen to a Honda rider. Thought about doing a u-turn, couldn't be arsed. Was interesting going through the passing lane section fully loaded with pillion, panniers, etc. The bike is about 2/3 the width of a car

Dawdled through to Maramarua, as there was no way in hell I could fit between cars and yellow lines, then used Monument Rd to head north, got onto SH2 at Mangatawhiri, then got stuck in more traffic juuuust north of Pukekohe, because a boat wasn't on a trailer (which doesn't work too good on a motorway). Couple of cruisers passed, and I figured I could use them to spread the traffic, so followed them, exited at Ramarama, then realised the motorway ahead of the interchange was clear.

Jumped back on, relatively pain free after that. Dropped off pillion in West Auckland, got home after 9pm. Since I was up at 0530, that was a long day...

Had a good ride from Tauranga to Paeroa and home again. Sorry to anyone that got stuck behind me, still slower on the open rode than other riders.

Yep did almost exactly that, escaped north via Puriri-Kopu-Miranda-Kaiaua-Hunua. No cars, no jams, no popos, no hassle. Even Kopu bridge wasnt an issue. Hope fush n chups were good too, mine were.

After 12 hr shift and finishing at 6 am on Sunday I took my 5yo son with me to Paeroa, ride down and all walking got my boy tired, so he follow sleep since we left Paeroa, I try strapping him to my self but that didn't work as his had was going from left to right so at Natea I put him on front of me with his helmet resting on my jeans and tank of bike , his hands on side and his legs on side of me, he was like Superman and ride like that to Auckland. So if you seeing black ST with little boy sleeping on front going pass you, that was us.

Ditto. Out of respect to our pillions we rode back on Monday & squeezed in the Kaipara loop, mostly wet, to remind ourselves why we ride bikes.

The Z900 looked & went like the dogs danglies but the Moto Guzzi Le Mans was flying! Also that wee RS 125 in the pre 89's had a couple of awesome races when you consider what it was up against.

Bloody marvellous, just 1 more year & I can go down again!
