time again for the annual Waikaretu Beach Run,
for those that have not been to this run before, it is a bit different to our normal rides, there is only one loop but it is approx 80km long, we have a lunch/fuel stop in the middle, with added attactions incl Sand Dunes, and a run down a west coast beach,
no kids or family loop on this one, and you do not return to your cars for lunch, you need to be signed in by 9.30am or else you miss the first part of the ride, if not the whole thing,
its not everyones cup of tea, but you get to see some places you never would else where, and enjoy the beauty of this area,
all funds raised go to the Waikaretu School,
Will be signposted from the Mercer and Rangairi Bridges

Had a great first half of the day, favourite part of the ride was the clay bush track as it was so tacky - is that what people refer to as Limestone hill?
Went up the big dune a couple of times and was enjoying the view, a couple of guys were on the beach, not sure if they were part of the ride though...? A quad was also down there hauling ass, turned away, looked back and he was in a heap on the ground with his bike a good 50+ metres away. Hope the guy was ok. The other couple of guys on the beach were on the scene pretty quickly.
After lunch I lost all compression when trying to kickstart my bike so could only roll start. Was getting fuel and spark but didn't feel normal when tring to kick it. Managed to roll start from the lunch stop and had a nice flowing ride without a stop back to the carpark.
Thanks to Scott, the Whitfords, other land owners, marshalls etc.

WTF is a .kmz file
SeppoDave

Very good question!
It's a Google Earth layer file. If you save the file, and then open it with google earth, it will show a line representing where we went yesterday, overlayed on the map of the area.
Try it, it's cool! (if you're a geek)

Nope. Using a GoPro HD Hero, and an old Garmin GPS in the bumbag as a datalogger.
Here's a screenshot from the video where some guy just laid down in front of me. I'll put some hilights up on Youtube tomorrow.

That google earth file was seriously cool. I zoomed in on the lunch break - looks like you did a few laps looking for your mates? :bleh:
Amazing the area we covered considering that was only half the ride. Can't wait to get home and watch your HD clip.

no we have not gone past there in a couple of years, we continue further up the coast and onto another farm now,
however if people had seen random warratars in teh paddocks, they are proposed sites of turbines for a new windfarm

Thanks guys.
@oldguy - I am sold on the GoPro camera. I've had it over a year now (got one of the first ones out of the states) and it hasn't let me down once. I've crashed on it a few times, one time landing the helmet right on top of it and the ground, it didn't even flinch. That was at a MR Motorcycles ride at Maramarua last year. There's a vid of it on my Youtube page.
