View Full Version : Jake the Bus goes to Christchurch. Contacts on ferries needed.

Hans
22nd February 2011, 20:06
I am in the middle of organising a Bedford bus with about 8 able bodied men and a shitload of supplies to go down from Welly hopefully this weekend. I will be needing a decent contact down there to coordinate with (Where are we needed, where are the supplies needed and what supplies?). Also, if anyone knows anyone on either of the boats, then a discount or even gratis passage would be a nice gesture. We're not mega rich and all of us are taking time off work on short notice, so we'll need a bit of a hand getting across the water...

Will be talking to both while at work tomorrow (truckie) but the people I know are possibly too low to be able to swing anything...

so call and ask to speak to manager or like, you have a genuine request ask who you can speak to & keep climbing the ladder til you get someone up top

Don't worry I'll try that too, but nepotism is nepotism...

Most likely to be a night sailing on Sat Sun or Mon. In the throes of organising at the moment. Will update on this thread...

Cheers, but don't want to be handling other people's money. Send that the way of the Red Cross or someone. We will be hitting up Hutt/Wellington businesses for stuff though. Anyone work at/is the boss of a Chemist/Outdoors store/Hardware store?

I seem to recall Shaun trying to do exactly the same after the first big shake - the emergency support services in Ch-ch told him to naff off...?

a) They were coping reasonably well then...

b) He went and dealt with them. There is always the option that we'll just go and help a neighbourhood without asking the Red Cross for "permission".

c ) We are all pros of one sort or another, ex soldiers, builders etc... Some of us have seen disasters on this scale before, therefore we speak the correct language and actually know how we could help, and where.

Also if you get stuck with whom to contact down there - I know my old man is doing much rescuing. But due to that he is quite difficult to contact.

But if the rescue fella's down there tell you go piss off - you could try sending him a txt like "I have a bus full of strong guys, tools etc.....what street can I help?" and he might get back to you.

His number is 027 549 2221, and his name is Peter.

I have visions of Rambo lookalikes jumping off the bus, all snarling "We're coming to help YOU...!".

Seriously though, it sounds like you guys know what you're doing.

But I'm aware of others who are determined to get to Christchurch to "help", who can only patrol the cordons desperately looking for someone to give a blanket to. These people are simply a drain on Christchurch's resources (food, fuel, etc).

If you're going well prepared and self-sufficient, good luck to you.

Water purification definitely. We'll post up a list after we have our meeting at 1800. Until then it's going to be a bit chaotic. Haven't had a decent chance to coordinate all day. Plus we're still all at work... You know the deal.

Hans

Until then:

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (RESPIRATORS, HELMETS ETC)
HAND TOOLS - SHOVELS, PICKS, HAMMERS, SAWS ETC
SOME FIRST AID KITS
THIS STUFF WILL BE REQUIRED IN THE HUTT BY THIS SATURDAY.

BIG THANKS TO ALL

SOME FIRST AID KITS

Do you have qualified medical people going?

If not I'd suggest keeping the kits simple and large.

Right, knowing fully well that I will look like a right arsehole:

5 of the 8 people who promised to take part yesterday, have called the whole thing off. Usual excuses, boss changed his mind, wife won't let me go etc. This includes the principal owner of the bus. So, unfortunately, it isn't happening. Trust me, I'm not happy about this, and I'm sorry for all of you, who've done their bit to help.
The only good thing to come out of this is about 2.5 tonnes of supplies that will make their way to PBT an CHCH respectively.

Once again, I'm sorry for making it look like I can pull this off when, in fact, I clearly can't. Looks like I'll have to rethink who my friends are.

Sorry folks.

Fella, don't be too hard on yourself, your effort has meant that 2.5 tonnes of supplies are on the way. That's commendable and not to be sniffed at.

I'm fucking frustrated that's all. Not just my effort either. The other two who were gonna go through with it helped too.

Don't be too hard on yourself mate - it is shitty down here and I fully understand anyone with kids opting to keep out of town and the associated risks involved in any form of CBD help. Even many suburbs are severely affected.

100% credit to you for having a crack at it.

The reason why is because they don't have the logistics to actually deal with incoming equipment like this that isn't through the normal channels.

Best thing you can do is contact the student army down in chch who are helping out and work through them, therefore getting in to the correct channels that are already setup.

Just seen on the telly, offers of help can be emailed to earthquakehelp@msd.govt.nz , might help with pointing whatever you've got in the right direction.
