I don't think they'll send 'the bomb' over. Japan should be able to buy america over to their side. Allthough does america even care about insignificant whales or the ocean for that matter, with all the crap their factories are pumping into the water-ways?

No species "deserves" to live. The whales' best chance of surviving is if humans want to eat them, as that means that humans will work out a way to eventually form stable population. Like other domesticated animals, fish, plants, etc.
On the other hand if we leave them alone eventually they will all die. There will be a mass extinction and they are unlikely to survive, as large animals are usually the first to go. In 10 million years humans will probably still be around, a lot of other species won't though. The most genetically weak will be the first to go (it's not survival of the fittest, it's death of the weekest which aren't the same thing). We'll probably see the cheetah go extinct in our lifetime and there's nothing we can do to stop it unless we resort to genetic engineering. The gene stock there is so interbred that cheetahs will accept skin grafts from nearly any other cheetah. You can't do that in nearly any other animal even with relatives.

Not to mention what they did to the world sword fish population.
The Japs are just as likely to do what ever they like an the rest of the world will sit back an watch.

Good post mate.
Hunters saved the african elephant by making them worth something.
Once the local poachers that were killing them to sell their body parts so they could feed their familys realised they could get ten times the bucks by selling just one to rich hunters, they became a resource worth saving.
The locals that had been the poachers got jobs protecting them, thus feeding their familys. The countrys involed got more tourists.BUT, now they have a problem with to many elephants for the available range so they now cull them.
Weird buggers us humans.

Here's a man who knows what he's talking about.
All the anti-science,ignorant hippies of today, for all their professed love of nature, think that evolution and change has stopped. There is nothing special about secies alive today that won't see nature extinguish them if they can't adapt.Man is just another cause of change and is just as susceptable to extinction as any other species. If we continue to over populate we will become another of nature's failed experiments.

If I had access to a nuke, I'd happily nuke a bunch of people I didnt like. A nuke is just a large efficient weapon.. Its a shame about the enviromnental side effects.. Someoen really needs to invent a weapon that can wipe out all life on a continent without causing a nuclear winter :-)

...... In 10 million years humans will probably still be around....
I don't think so. If we haven't bombed our self to death then I'm sure we'll have more or less ruined this planet. Global warming, ozone layer, land fills....dumping and burning every thing and nothing can go against the mighty $ no mater what. Recycling can only be done when it pays and who can be bothered to put things in the bin anyway. Go on get a Greenpeace sticker for your car/bike and pay them 5$ pr month but just keep chucking the bottles in the bin and don't worry at all about the buy and throw away mentality.
...and if that doesn't do it then in 10 mil years we'll all have to be hooked op to machines. These days everybody is surviving everything and gene defects are carried on and combined with other defects making for a grim future for our combined gene pool.
...or maybe an asteroid will hit us, or we'll manage to create a deadly disease to wipe us ....
In any case I'm quite sure we humans will kill our self's and most of the rest of the living creatures on this planet. Maybe the cockroach will rule the world next

Whales have done fine so far. How many million years?

Actually there is/was one - the neutron bomb. The benefit of this nuclear device is that it kills biological organisms (people) but leaves bridges, buildings etc intact. Thus the conquering heroes can stroll in afterwards and not have to worry about rebuilding.
Strangely enough, the American people were a bit appalled and didn't like that sort of bomb so told President Reagan to put it back on the shelf.

yeah BUT...
they're just a little less discriminating than... well... any other weapon I can think of really.
IF you could get all the people in one place
AND exclude all the other people
AND keep them out of the fallout zone
AND you'd exhausted all other non fatal measures to get them to change their minds or incarcerate them
THEN, yes - a nuke would be a good solution
ELSE do summat else, dismantle the nuke and use one or more of the methods detailed above
(END IF?)
I guess that's why they didn't just nuke the mountains the bin Laden was supposedly hiding. The destruction would have (probably) killed him, and 1'000s of others.
Then the Americans would have even fewer friends in the international community...
Yeah - nukes are the answer... to a very very very specific question - and one that doesn't get asked very often... if at all.

On the subject of 'eating whales will save them'...erm... been fishing in the Marlborough Sounds lately? Most people motor right out to D'urville Island or other points right out at the northern end, because the rest of the sounds has been fished out. Been white baiting? Heaps of them left in Chch- not.
And oil- we're all working hard to conserve oil aren't we? Every year cars typically get more and more powerful, 'cause thats what WE want. A few years back the average fuel consumption for an SS Comode was 6k per litre... now its more powerful and has a 6 litre engine. Not many of us really gives a shit about the environment. We create waste at an alarming rate, and then just use it to fill in holes. We all ride around on motorbikes that use tyres- there still isn't an economic solution to getting rid of old tyres. Some of us can destroy a set in 2000k's... but hey, it's fun so who gives a fuck?
Human nature and economic pressure ensures that we only ever decide to save something we have been using heavily when there are almost none left. The whale meat gathered for 'scientific purposes' by the Japanese must sell for a hell of a premium- if whaling is allowed we will decimate their numbers in short order, simply because it's worth so much and the population base that wants to eat it is huge. Hell we nearly wiped them out when the only way of finding them was by sight ("THAR SHE BLOWS")- imagine what we'll be able to do with sonar, high tech directional microphones, spotter choppers etc etc.
Scientists have for the last few years been gathering info on migration paths etc...won't that come in handy...
Sorry for the rant. I'm not actually a greenie. I love destroying tyres, and I will keep doing so because I like it. I will continue eating meat, throwing away paper, using disposable nappies on my son and all the other environmentally unfreindly things that I currently do because it's easy. In a few years time the pine plantation on my parents farm will be chopped down, there'll be a hell of a mess, probably accelerated erosion and flash floods in the creeks- but what the hell, I'll be able to buy a faster bike that will kill tyres faster than the one I have now...
I doubt there has ever been a species on earth that is as capable of changing eco systems and causing the extinction of other species as rapidly as we can. The difference between humans and the Tyranosaurus Rex that killed and ate the last (insert extinct species here) is that WE understand that there will be no more of them. WE understand that this impacts on the ecosystem in highly complex ways and can create serious imbalances. Hasn't the El Ninio/ La Nina weather pattern been linked to algae that congregate in the Atlantic or something? Think about it- bloody Algae can control the weather! If we kill off all the krill eating whales- who's going to keep the krill numbers down? What will happen if they can breed unchecked... I wonder if they can fuck the world up as efficiently as we can.

Penguins. Penguin numbers have been booming as we've been killing the whales.
The thing is we don't have to worry about running out of oil. You can always make it out of coal, and we got so much of that even at an exponential increase in population it'd still take 200 years to run out. And 200 years is a long time, considering how far we came in the past 100.
Also humans have got a rather self-centered view that they believe they can wipe out life. We probably couldn't. We might manage to wipe out the larger lifeforms, however the current modern bacteria that are around are just as evolved as us. Give it another 500 million years and it'll all come back.

There is only one threat to the environment from Man.Over population and ecosystem destruction. But you can't force people not to breed like bacteria,It's not PC.
And for the Hippies... if we all went "organic" the ecosystem destruction would be even worse because the amount of land needed to grow the same amount of food would be far greater.

Is the neutron bomb the one that causes internal hemorrhaging? There's the option of using infrasound weaponry - but they can't make it directional yet. The people that invented it inadvertently killed a fellow researcher, by testing the thing. It's basically the idea of a tuning fork that vibrates at such a low/high frequency, it causes sound waves to get trapped in the cavities of your body (ie. most of your body...inc. sinuses etc), and people die.
Not good. And so on the shelf for a wee while.
Me? I'm up for biological weapons. Only cos I'm interested in the field via work! :)
