Christchurch Quake Appeal Ride
SUPPORTED BY
KIWIBIKER.CO.NZ
KIWIRIDER
WIMA
DATE: Saturday March 19th.
LEAVE TIME: 10:30am from Dairy Flat BP on the Northern Motorway.
ARRIVAL TIME: 11:30 am at the Muddy Waters Tavern in Mercer
DONATION: $10 per Bike
With tributes and support coming in from around the world, now is the time to show how much we care about our own.
There are thousands of Kiwis in Christchurch that need assistance now more than ever.
A cash donation from bikers in the North Island will indeed help some of those who are going through desperate times.
All we are asking for is a $10 donation from each Bike.
Donations to made on the day but if you cant make it or would prefer, a bank account number is avaliable below.
The Appeal funds collected will be forwarded to the Salvation Army Earthquake appeal.
In true Kiwibiker tradition, we urge bikers from the Waikato/BOP/ King Country and everywhere in between and beyond to get in and show your support and generosity for those devastated by the Christchurch Earthquake.

Ride Rules:
The ride speed will be controlled by the four bikes at the front.
We will get to the Silverdale off ramp/on ramp at 50 kph using the outside lane only.
Once back on the motorway heading towards the city, Get into the fast lane southbound asap.
We will increase to 80kph.
We will stay in the fast lane which takes us onto lane 4 on the bridge.
Once off the Bridge we will move out into the fast lane.
Staying in the fast lane leaves the offramps free for other road users.
There wont be a lane change until after the SH2 turnoff at the bottom of the Bombays.
We will then merge to the outside lane giving us time to exit at Mercer.
There will be no overtaking.
Stay alert and watch your following distances. (cant emphasize that enough)
Do not ride directly behind the bike in front. (once again, be very conscious of this point)
Once at Mercer, park where ever you can, there is heaps of room, its also a truckstop.
If the ride is big enough, we may to get some help at the Silverdale turn around.

While some of us are unscathed, large parts of our community have been unbelievably hammered.
Thanks again for your support, you all rock

Pleasure....
While day to day stuff continues as normal for those outside the affected area, and the rest of NZ, there are many who for now, life is anything but normal.

From Kiwibiker email...
Maha,
I heard of the devastation just yesterday in the news here in the central United States. I wish I could be there to ride in support of my Kiwi friends!
Can I make a donation on behalf of my wife and myself although we cannot be there to ride along with our biker brothers and sisters?
...and another.
Hey there, due to bad times last year i had to sell my bike. I would love to take part in this ride as its such a worthy cause, I honestly find it upsetting as it affects soooooo many people.
My point is.....although i wont be there in body i sure as hell will be in spirit & thoughts. If you can send me some details i will be more than happy to donate the $10 to help your numbers.
Cheers & hope you all stay safe.

That will be happening, Anne has an extensive media contacts list. There are offers coming in on a daily bases. A stunt rider offered a show for free on the day, I declinded that offer for now. I want to keep this simple as possible. There could room for such and event at another time though.

Thank you Doug, yes I will need a hand with ride control at the front.
I have it quite clear in my mind how the ride will pan out (speed/lane choice/where to change lanes etc) so perhaps if yourself and Kelvin/Al or whoever is coming down from the north can help with that?
I had six ride controllers on the last one (360 bikes) but we were going through the City and needed that amount. Not so much on this ride.

For anybody looking at coming through to the Waikato.
The Cock n Bull, Maui Street, Te Rapa, will be open from 9-30am for tea, coffee and toilets. May be hot chips or something for brekky if needed (not 100% sure on this brekky tho), but at the moment I am greatfull to Cock n Bull management for opening early for us. They have said anything for a good cause.
Damn good reason to go back later for a brew and a bite to eat I say.

Hi guys,
I'll be there to support you on the day and I'd like to donate my services as a"tail end charlie".
If anyone has any issues, I'll happily take them to the end of the route at no cost.
From there I can negotiate to take them home if needed. Unfortunately I won't be able to cater for the Can Ams or trikes on this one. Contact me on 0211569448 in regards to the ride.

From there I can negotiate to take them home if needed. Unfortunately I won't be able to cater for the Can Ams or trikes on this one. Contact me on 0211569448 in regards to the ride.
Cheers Kevin

Post #2 now has the Ride Rules.
It spells out how I want the ride to go.
We got 360 bikes around the Auckland Motorway and into the Domain in 09' using a similar system.
I will read the main points out on the day.
Hi Maha
Just wondered how the ride went, and how much was raised through this event :)

Thank you to Motorcycle recovery too, though we never hope to have to use your services the bloke you picked up when he broke down on the motorway will be plesed you attended today. To all the on the spot helpers that pitched in today, thank you.
Oh, thank you to the woman that made those patches! She sold 150 of them making $750 donated to the Red Cross from our ride today too! I will post her contact details up here when I have them, she will take orders for them, a really cool dated momento of the days events.
Kiwirider and Big Dave for the filming, and to another guy who also took huge amounts of film. Be watching Prime news and Maori News tonight too, they both covered the event. Cant wait to see pics, so load them up those that took them, I was too busy counting to 10 to take any.

A glorious autumn day today saw several hundred motorcyclists turn out to raise money for the victims of the Earthquake in Christchurch. There were riders from Whangarei, Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland that converged on the Muddy Waters Tavern at Mercer, and in Wellington 150 odd riders rode to the Parrot and Jigger for the same cause, the grand sum of $1200 was raised there.
The Auckland ride saw 275 riders gather at the BP at Dairy Flat. The gals from WIMA were standout collectors of donations in their pink jackets. After the rider briefing, we geared up and made our way down the motorway in convoy to Mercer. Watching the bikes stream to the parking area at Mercer, were dozens of riders from other areas.
More donations were gathered and counted and the organisers were able to announce that $4000 had been raised in Auckland for the cause. This money will be donated to the Salvation Army for use at ground level in Christchurch. The organisers, Mark & Anne James in Auckland and Iain Cook in Wellington, would like to thank everyone for their support and help today.
A brilliant day, with a fantastic turn out, and a wonderful amount of money raised.

Yet another awesome well run event guys, I just wanted to say that the feedback I have been getting from customers, friends and family alike, includes comments like "WOW!!!, Impressive turnout, absolutely astounded by the sight and sound of so many well polished machines travelling down the motorway..." and the list just goes on.
Unfortunately for us we couldn't make it to the finish, after one jumpstart and a tow from just before Oteha Valley Road, our vehicle decided to reconsider exactly how many cylinders it should have active. Thus forcing our own retirement from the run (didn't see that one coming!) and an afternoon of sourcing a replacement vehicle for the coming week.
But the good news is we were able to see Steve safely on his way home.
Thankyou to the NZ Police for the rolling block they put in place to see us safely off the motorway and I especially want to thank Mom and Maha for once again allowing us to attend the event and look forward to seeing you all again real soon.

Cheers Mark, It was good to get help at the Sliverdale off/on ramp by the HP and from there it went really well to be honest. The four lead bikes got away later than the other 53 lead bikes. Bit of catching up to do at the start. Several went on a got to the front (RIB/Colonel and Karl) while two of us sat back and slowed the rest of pack down.
I said at the ride brief that we would head out in ten minutes.
Then a cop said ''so ten minutes''?
Yip, ten minutes, and by the time I got back to bike the cops had the bikes heading out the door. Then just as we were about the leave the Sky News Chick shoved a mic under my helmet.. all good in the end.
The videos prove what blast it was.
I managed to slip the CD's into a couple of bike bags while walking to the ride brief.
Both Honda's so they will love em'.
Pressure was on in the last 20 minutes, we just called for everyone to gather for the ride brief. The megaphone wouldn't work, Sky News chick rang three times, patch lady wanted me to announce for her, as did recovery guy, other people were asking questions...I find it hard to retain details at a moments notice so had the people concerned on the hill with me...easy that wy.
Really truely had an awesome day.

Great event, good to see so many being generous with their time and money to help our fellow Kiwi's in Christchurch.
Just gutted someone knocked my helmet of its (stable) position on my bike breaking an $800 helmet. Had to turn around after it started falling to bits on the motorway and go home early.
On the bright side.... time for a new helmet I guess. Just a rather expensive day.

I would have loved to catch up mate... was out polishing the bike beforehand too. Hey, no matter, a small loss compared to what others lost in CHCH. I am just pleased to see so many turn up and get stuck in. It would give me warm fuzzies if I actually had feelings ;)

...and the money keeps coming in.
I have the Wellington money..Thanks Iain.
That will be transferred today into the account along with the Auckland money.
Plus a couple more donations have come in.
The total so far is $5337.
We have an emial from James Partridge (Salvation Army) in response to what we did on Saturday.
''The result on the weekend was amazing, and just shows how strong New
Zealand is as a family and how we have come together in this time of
crisis.
Thanks again for all you have done. If you have any photos from the event
you like to send through, we are going to acknowledge all the events that
have happened around the country on our website (when things calm down a
bit) and if possible put photos up''.
May have to send through a video or two.

I carry a jar lid for that very purpose, you can buy a disc made for the job but why? when you have something that will do the same job in your pantry.
