According to the Census.

That grate anyone else a little bit?

Is it also naughty to put Jupiter as my country, my address is a N.Z one so it seems like a more than a slightly pointless question. It's tempting.

Cool. Means we don't need motor vehicle licences or pay motor vehicle registration fees.

:woohoo:

Haven't got my census yet, but that doesn't sound right; a motorcycle is a device designed to transport people or cargo, and has an internal combustion engine. So it's definitely a motor vehicle. Whats the penalty for scrawling 'get fucked' on that page of the census and sending it back?

Dunno, I erm......may have counted it as a vehicle anyway......

'It says not including motorcycles', so to clarify it does'nt say they are'nt motor vehicles, maybe that they could'nt give a bloody fucks. Seems a bit off to me. What if you only own a bike? Would be a bit mis-leading to say you don't own a vehicle, a bit of a survey error if you ask me.

Yeah I noticed that.

Census says:

DONT count:

Vehicles that belong visitors
Vehicles this household borrows occasionally......
vehicles that can be used only for work or only on the farm
motorbikes or scooters

So trucks, tractors (towing the boat), jet skis, trikes etc must all be included but not bikes!??!?!?!?!?!?!

+1 for the get fucked option.

24th February 2011, 11:44
Disregarding the last one, it just sounds like they are after vehicles you own that are used on the road for personal transportation, which is fair enough. But why say disregard bikes as well, I'm a bit

Umm, so....well, what exactly is it doing when i'm riding it? I'd have thought it was transporting me.

Anyone in an "official" capacity (mag, bronz etc) want to ask the question or should we all do it?

WTF??? In our household we have 6 times the amount of bikes then motorvehicles.....

I myself only own motorbikes, no car licence. Would be interested to understand the reasoning!

Question sent...

Why are motorcycles not a valid choice in this question? They are a legitimate form of transport, and are indeed often the only means of personal transport for some.

I was a bit perplexed at the imaginary friend question.
What religion are you?
Admittedly, the top answer is none.

But surely the initial question should be a tad less assuming.

It has been that ways for decades. Each time I add motorcycles - sometimes I write a rude comment - I have never had any response.

I highly recommend each and every one of you add a comment.

I'm tempted to write in the income section MYOB.

I presume the census is an exception to the privacy laws - sorry sir under the privacy act I cannot supply any information.

Here's one - when you register a vehicle online why do you have to fill in your name and license number first. Surely it is irrelevant who is paying for the individual vehicles rego.

Apparently it's 500 bucks court costs plus 20 per day after if you don't fill it out. Would image fucking with it may be similar.

The most famous individual to stand up against the census was the Christchurch Wizard, who fought the requirement for several decades. He took the battle to court, traveled outside the 12-mile limit and cast a "disappearing spell" in 1986.

I have only ever written my name, address and DOB on the census form. I then put a line through every question, sign it and send it back. No response ever.

I will not be part of a statistic for some overfed beauracratic bullshit

I like the bit where it says

It might be seen as prying, but the census is used to help determine how billions of dollars of government funding is spent in the community, in areas such as hospitals, schools, roads, public transport and recreational facilities.

 shouldn't they have budgets to figure that out. Or is there some guy just spraying money around, oops, best see where that went, order a census, they don't cost much

What?

Yep.
And they asked the exact same thing last time.
And it's a dumb question anyway, as the motor registry already has that information.

Question sent...

I have often quoted the fact that people generally, encouraged by officials in positions of "authority", do not regard motorcycles as a serious and legitimate form of transport!

This is surely proof of exactly that problem!

I also believe that this is the basis of public "perception" (their reality) and a major contributor to their subconsciously switching off and "not seeing us", we don't officially count and therefore should be disregarded! .... I.E. I didn't see him officer!

Fantasy? ... it is written in the census ... and it's written in our historic statistics!

Time to wake them up people and nobody else will do it but "US'!

24th February 2011, 19:45
fuckwits indeed. The household sheet excludes motorcycles as vehicles but the personal one includes them as a form of transport to work. Your guess as to which group of figures they look at when deciding on roading policies etc. As we don't count in census and a separate thread today the AA don't represent us its no wonder we get WRB with balance tipping rumble strips right next to them

Actually there is. However most changes have not occurred due to govt but private organizations.

But then again that is the same as everything else in this country.
So i would put what happens in census higher than actually voting for Beehive Idol

Apart from being canned...
This is their reasoning behind not including motorcycles in the dwelling form.

With regard to your question on why motorbikes and scooters are excluded as motor vehicles, the standard and classification are designed for collecting data by private dwelling or household rather than from individual people.
The assumption is that the vehicle or vehicles are available for use by all members of the household and/or on behalf of all members of the household.
This specifically excludes motorbikes and scooters because:

A motorbike is typically a personal rather than a household transport option
In the event of an emergency, or a specific need to transport others, a motorbike is not a good option
There are barriers to the use of motorcycles because you need a more specialised skill set, and indeed license, to ride a motorcycle.

Makes sense in general terms, but still assumes 1 size fits all.

In a way yes.... However I would imagine that in the case of an emergency that I am not going to be allowed to get away with driving a car with no licence to drive it; "just cause it's safer"? Secondly, where the fuck am I gonna get this magical car from if I don't own one, steal it?

Sounds like at least one government department realises we're more skilled than car drivers.

Our household has used a bike as its only means of transport.

Not a good option also includes Prius things too. I'd expect they'd be covered by 'car'.

Bullshit. :angry2:

All the people (of legal age) in our house are licensed to ride motorcycles and we have a motorcycle which we share between us!

Our motorcycle is a legal and legitimate form of transport capable of carrying one passenger if required.

Motorcycles should be included to signify their legitimate existence and right to use the road!

At least then other drivers might stop knocking us off the road because subconsciously they think we don't legitimately exist!

Now that they have canned the census we should try to get this changed before they set the next census date!
