I'm starting this thread to gauge the interest and support and what be involved/cost of running a Bucket only riding/marshaling training day at Kaitoke.

I for one am still getting my head around getting around the track. So if more people, like Hamish has done, offer to help I would very much appreciate it.

Tentatively would it be possible to run it the day before the Easter meet?

Wouldn't a 5 minute chat after riders briefing about flags surfice? Or maybe a handout that briefly spells it out. It's not that complicated really.
If you want tuition, ask someone with a key if they will let you go with them next time they go and show you some lines etc or get your own key and invite someone to come out and spend a few hours with you, or maybe even get to the track early before next race day and ask someone if they'll walk the track with you. There's ways to do things without having to spend $1000 to hire the track for a day.

Get a membership at the club (and get a key even) and it will make the racing we do there $10 cheaper each time... that's $120 saved a year if you race every month. Ask someone to join you at the club one day for some riding and go practice.

I am willing to go to the track and help out/get some practice riding in. You don't need flag marshals if you aren't racing, and there would only be 1 or 2 bikes out there. So getting a membership almost pays for itself if you intend to ride every month and you are allowed to go practice at the club.

If you can find other bucketers that are keen to improve their lap times, tell them to get a membership at the club (and a key maybe) and go do some thinking laps around Kaitoke.

I think we just need to do as has been done at Slipway.
A quick run down on the flags and when they need to be shown.
A reminder that flaggies are there to flag...not just watch the racing and to watch, in particular, the traffic going away from you as that is the area you need to watch and alert other racers to if there is a hazard.

Of course these things can be said again and again but you can't make people listen.

Dave and I went to the track a while back and he spent some time showing me lines and giving me tip. Some I am doing and some I keep forgetting in the heat of the race (sorry Dave)
Also walking the track and discussing lines is a huge help. Craig did that with us early on and it made a massive difference, before that every lap I rode in a sometimes random spot for each corner wondering why I struggled to get round the next corner some laps and not others.

Your right to want to learn from others. Hiring the track is expensive so the others suggestions are spot on.

My advice (for what it's worth), slow down to speed up. Riding smooth is fast.
Rather than diving into a corner on the brakes, then trying to power out with a fast engine on the other side. Try going a little slower into the corner and accelerating smoothly all the way round going to full throttle as early as possible on the exit.

Thanks for the suggestions, which I will take up given the opportunity.

i was thinking more of a group training session. And with Easter being a two day meet, having a group session on could attract riders coming in from out of town for the meet.

I'm all in favour of the Wellington mob giving up as much of their home track advantage as possible :) Sure I'll return the favour if you ever make it up here.

If you're training juniors the MNZ permit fee is ZERO.
Well worth it at that cost! Don't forget to remind the office when you apply.

Also if you want to try something a bit different, read the book "A Twist of the Wrist".

And 'Twist the wrist 2', which I hear is better.

I reckon read the book. And then read it again. Then look at your bike and make sure it is as comfortable for racing as it can be and everything is working well. Then get on it and go scare yourself. Push the limits of breaking and corner speed. Ask yourself every time you get on the gas could I have done that sooner. All it takes is going to the track with ONE of these things in mind. Get it nailed and move to the next thing. Worked for me.

I can get on the gas sooner, off the gas and on the brakes later. I know this. Every corner I try, every corner I fail.

Don't try every corner, this will seem a little overwhelming. Pick a corner you are comfortable with and focus on that lap after lap, when you feel better/faster in that corner pick another corner and do the same thing.

There will be a talk on flags their meaning and how to use them and flag points on the track after riders briefing at round 3 of the TSS RED BARON KING OF KAITOKE. this month
