I'm looking at organising an event next year taking in the best back roads of the North Island, preferably below Auckland. Can anyone recommend any great roads? The event will be over 3 days with the main purpose of riding along with some great partying and extra's like .............well, you have to wait and see. The evnt will be aimed at the man who LOVES his machine.
I'm no Kiwi and thus i don't know all the good back roads yet.
All and any help appreciated.
PS: Please let me know if you would be keen to as spaces will be limited to about 100 bikes (Preferbaly single riders) Costs will include accomodation, breakie, dinner and drinks on arrival. The route will be a mixture of some nicer cruising roads along with some speed patches(obviously within the law) Gear will also be transported by us, so no need to carry it on your bike.:scooter::scooter:

It's for a road bikes preferably 250cc plus though i'm looking at sports bikes(though any are welcome). The aim is some great riding roads with a few tasks to spice it up followed by a nice parties/get togethers every night. I'm thinking of starting the event at Taupo and getting people from everywhere in the North Island(Though South are always welcomed) to join. Plans are stil to be finalised. I hoping to get a big turn out

In no particular order
SH22 to Ngaruawahia
Kihikihi to Mangakino via Waipapa rd.
Parts of 32 and 41 down the west side of Lake Taupo
SH4 between Te Kuiti and Taumaruni
THE FORGOTTEN HIGHWAY!
SH 4 from Raetihi to W(h)anganui
SH2 from Opotiki to Gisborne
The road from Gisborne to Wairoa
Don't be fooled by the SH designation. Many of our state highways are little more than goat tracks - particularly 22 and 43.
There's plenty of others around down Wellington and Palmerston North area. Problem is getting there can be pretty mind numbing - you get to choose from SH1 or long boring straights.

Suggested route....
Day one - Taupo-Napier-Gisborne- Waioeka/Opotiki.
Day two - Opotiki-Rotorua-Atiamuri-Mangakino-Benneydale-Taumaranui
Day three - Taumaranui-Stratford-Wanganui-Raetihi-National Park-Tokaanu/Turangi-Taupo
Still reckon 100 is too many.
And 3 days is only scratching the surface of what is available...

The best roads that stick out in my mind are:
SH29, towards Tauranga over the Kaimai's
Paekakariki Hill
and a little closer to home, SH16, the part before the lookout.

100 is too many, accommodation for that many in out of the way places is limited to say the least. Wont even go into the other risks involved.

i would be real keen for a ride like this. It would be good to do it over a few more days though. Maybe to eliminate the risk of 100 bikers racing off together you could release them in groups of 3 or 4 at a time. Accomadation would be a tricky part but we could just stay in cabins and tents in camp grounds. I am definatly keen on this though and am willing to help out with route planning and accomadation if required.

I know i said a 100 bikers, but thats a rough number. Saying that, i'm not looking at everyone shooting off at once(For obvious reasons) though i was looking at doing it at intervals like in Rally sessions. So maybe 1 minute gaps:eek: As for accommodation, well, 100 seems to be a problem as i was thinking of people sharing rooms (Either with a friend or fellow biker) to cut costs along with being able to find rooms. Anyway, that seems to be a problem, so i might have to reconsider numbers.
Now, this is not a GROUP ride at all. It's riders enjoying the open road meeting up at places to chat and party. This is NO toy run and i'm not planning on roughing it (NO camping and so forth) There's no age limit though the key is for a braod mix of people to get together:rolleyes:
Any help is welcomed.

After investigation, i think 100 causes a few problems.
Only looking at 3 days as i don't want it to be to long along with only needing one day off work :) The key is to leave some roads open for next year also which will be down south ...:chase:

That's a hell of a big group.
The Ducati Tourismo is usually restricted to about 70 I think. The group tour I was on for the last two weeks was 25 strong.
In neither case do they travel en masse. People find two or three other riders that travel at similar pace and ride in small groups. It was the same when I went on a trip organised by Northwest Motorcycles. No reason for this to be any different?
Finding sleeping quarters for 100 might be another matter...

Its called a tent. Strapping a tent to the back of a sportsbike doesn't make the bike handle like a sports tourer. Or does it. I don't actually know :bleh:

I didn't want to go there, but yes...
There's a big risk in a large group of mainly strangers to each other, riding back roads they are not necessarily familiar with. Mix that with long-ish riding days, 'partying' nights and a succession of possibly makeshift accommodation.
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that recipe.

I do get what you say about strangers, new roads and partying being an issue.
Now part of the fun is riding new roads and thus that means being more cautious than usual. This is no different from normal riding. Now your concerns for the partying is justified and clamping down on pissed or exhausted riders the next day will be done and those not in the right state will be thrown out. Accommodation will be pre booked and thus all you need to do will be enjoy the ride and an grap some lunch.
This is a social get together with people wanting to spend some quality time with there machines on the road with like minded people though you ride at your pace and enjoy the company of others at the overnight stops or chill out on your own
I DON'T WANT ANY FATALITIES!
