So i have recently discovered the beef and bacon pie at the local pie shop.
I must say it is quite a pie .... the bakery around the corner from home also does a mean butter chicken pie.
This got me thinking ... what is the best pie?

In all cases, IF it is well made...

Whadya mean you don't know about a mutton pie? McGreggors in Palmerston (by Dunedin) was my favourite haunt but I can't get them here in AK. Round pie with awesome crust and pastry and a spicey minced mutton... Bloody delicious.
My local bakery in Pakuranga does a nice steak and cracked pepper... but it's not a McGreggors mutton pie!

Agree with Jim, ingredients mean nothing - it's all in the making.
I found the world's best chicken pie once and only once. It was a small delicatessen at Paraparaumu Beach about 7 or 8 years ago and appeared to be run by a couple of homosexual gentlemen. The next time I went back the place had closed down :shit: It had a creamy peppery sauce with no sign of gelatine and a smattering of prime cooked & diced chicken breast. Simply exquisite!
I'm hungry now.

ingredients do play some part for instance I don't care how well made a mussel or fish pie is I still don't like it. Mix your fav flavor with best maker you got a winner.

It is possible to overdo a pie.
IMHO I think a pie is good working kai. It's not delicatessen food. Too many chefs bugger about with a pie trying to get 1001 flavours into it.
The best is simple pastry, Good quality meat, cheese and not too much. You've got to have gravy. Not too salty or peppery.

There is an awesome bakery on Old Taupo Rd in Roto-Vegas that does a Steak, Bacon, Mushroom and Cheese number! Has to be the best I have ever had - and I have had quite a few in my 33 years... Have the gut to prove it!
When I was down in Otago, you couldn't beat a Jimmys pie (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/103017-Pies-power-food-of-the-gas-station?p=1129298510#post1129298510). The Mince option was almost better than the M&C, now that has to say something... :msn-wink:

Fuck I love pies.
Sadly I have had to cut back as I have been getting fatter and fatter every year.
So, instead of 3 pies a day (or 6 pies a day if I was hungrey+cream cakes) I have only had a single pie in the last month.
And fuck it was good.
I wanted to lick it all over before taking a bite, maybe rub a bit on my nipples, But I had already freaked out the pie lady so I played it cool:bleh:
Anyhow, Steak and Cheese is a safe option if you don't know the shop, Only real useless or tight cunts can fuck it up, if the shop is any good I like to sample the entire range and pick a few favorites.
Every so often a shop has a single pie that is a stunner, The Mince and Cheese pie at the Kuripuni bakery is a stunner.

I have road tested a number of pies from a number of locations made by a number of people from a number of countries with a number of fillings wrapped on a number of pastry recipies......
I have to say that the ultimate pie for me, the one that you can count on to get you through the day, that rises to meet your expectations, ultimate comfort food, the pie that reminds you of home, your first beer, your favorite pet, your best mate and your filthiest root.....
The pie that makes you smile during the bad times, stay staunch at funerals and completeley piss yourself when yer granny pisses her bloomers...
It has to be, it must be, without doubt
the one, and only
Mince and cheese....

Sigh.
OK. If you can pull this off you can name your price.
2-3 tbsp olive oil
500 g fillet steak
1 tbsp butter
5 whole shallots
200 g smoked bacon, (chunks is good)
2 onions, finely chopped
900 ml Guinness
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
250 ml red wine
One doz oysters
375 g ready-to-roll puff pastry
1 egg, lightly beaten
Heat the oil in large casserole dish and fry the whole fillet over a medium heat until lightly browned. Remove the beef and set aside to cool a bit.
Melt the butter in the pan and add the shallots. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
Add the bacon and onions and cook for 3-4 minutes more. Remove and set aside.
Cut the fillet into 1” cubes
Add the Guinness to the pan and stir in the cooked bacon and onion mixture. Cook for 3-4 minutes and then add the steak.
Stir in the garlic and red wine. Cover and cook slowly for 1 hour. Remove from the heat and stir in the oysters.
Set the oven to 200°C. Roll the pastry out to cover the top of the casserole dish and crimp the edges. Brush with beaten egg and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the pastry is risen and golden. Serve immediately.
Which reminds me, I've been meaning to work up a recipie for a dish I found in a wee place in Petone. It's a single serving Beef Wellington, with oysters. Pâté de foie under the pastry shell.

I would draw attention to one factor that seems to have been overlooked in this thread - so far anyway.
Whilst I agree that Oxford make a decent pie, as do many other piemen, they can vary enormously from outlet to outlet.
F'rinstance. There is a dairy in the same block as my shop. They sell Oxford pies. But I won't buy 'em from there, nor any other brand of pie either, because they heat 'em up in the microwave and then stick 'em in the pie warmer. Microwaved pastry has the texture of smegma and never recovers its proper consistency. Trouble is the dairy owners are Indian and vegetarian to boot, so they wouldn't know what the hell to do with a pie anyway.
I have tried to explain what should happen but I may as well talk to the wall...
Mind you, it stops me gobbling pies all day and getting enormously fat...

I can't believe that the favourite pie in the poll is "steak and cheese"... since most of the cheese versions I've tried have the consistency of smegma and a flavour to match. Might be different if they used "real" cheese instead of that emulsified soap you get in most of them...
Anything and cheese simply doesn't do it for me.

Yeah mate I agree entirely.Cheese to me just dumbs down the flavour.
A good example is a maccas cheeseburger, have one of those then a maccas hamburger, the hamburger has HEAPS more flavour.

Yes folks, it’s time to stand up for what is right, time to make our voices heard, time to make those responsible step up and prove themselves worthy of our custom.
The Pie International Standards Society (P.I.S.S) are fed up of being offered sub-standard product. How many times have we been sat on our bikes listening to our guts bubble, urgle and gurgle an hour or so after paying good money for our pastry wrapped delight, only to find it makes you shite through the eye of a needle.
And how many times have we unwrapped what is ticketed as a mince and cheese pie, only to find a gaping hole where the filling should be occupied by nothing more than a spiders cock and half a toenail.
And who has fallen victim to the dreaded ‘unexpected and unplanned’ fart following a day in the saddle and that servo pie for lunch, just as you are snuggling up for a night in front on the TV…..it’s even worse when it’s the guys who are botty burping.
But never fear pie lovers, P.I.S S is here to fight your corner. We want pie people to be educated and thus be able to educate those purveyors of pies across the country. You don’t have to put up with crap pies anymore, together we can bring this fight to the very heart of the industry.
Check out this link, it’s the low down on who’s who and what’s what….
http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/scienceandeducation/factsheets/factsheets1999/proposedmeatstandard21.cfm
Together, we can take the P.I.S.S as far as necessary to win our fight.
Lets get moving people, time and pastry wait for noone…

Eves do great deserts, but I don't think their pies are much better than average. It's a shame they use that processed cheese sauce as well, I stay away from those ones.
The dinky bakery at Shell triangle Mt Wellington does great Steak & Cheese, Steak & Curry, Pepper Steak, Steak Potato top and Mince Potato top pies. The B&E is ok. The chicken, as always, is questionable. Their pies are decent sized and cost less than $3 each.
Mt Richmond food bar, which does a whole range of things, has a better than average chilly beef pie, again for less than $3.
Avoid the pies at Commissariat Rd bakery on the cnr of Commissariat and Ruawai.
Greenwoods Cnr does a good B&E - no pissing around with those waste of time fillers like peas and carrots (ewww), just a no-nonsense Bacon and Egg pie. Full to the brim and a dash of pepper. Their sausage rolls have a much better quality sausage meat than most bakeries too (but that's another thread). Price is about $4 IIRC.
They did have a few other good ones there too, but I can't recall off hand any specifics.

Bloody hell. All this talk of pies got me into baking one last night. Got to eat it around midnight...(started baking about 11.00pm).
One of my customers gave me a huge container of blackberries and told me to "get the wife to bake you a blackberry pie!"
Being as how I don't have such a commodity (wife that is) I figured I had to bake it myself.
A visit to the super to get pastry - had to thaw it out first - and then into the kitchen. Eventually got it sorted and into the oven it went.
Once the pastry was nice and brown out it came.
Not the best pie I ever tasted to be honest...all that friggin work for an indifferent result!
I'll make me own pastry next time...

The Aussies in general still don't know how to make pies. You feel extra let down as they cost about twice as much over there as they do here, so they score poorly on value for money.
There is, however, at least one exception in the state of Queensland. About half way between Gold Coast City and Brisbane is Yatala (Yat'la) and the Yatala Pie Shop. Famous for it's pies, the conveniently located by the motorway (and well signposted) store had a queue almost out the door yesterday afternoon.
There is a big selection, but I went with the "beef, cheese and bacon" and "jalapeno chilli" for my comparison test. These pies are big, hard to tell without scales, but I'd say definitely another 25-30% bigger on the standard radius at least. Filling was of reasonably good quality (compared to home, so well above average compared to the shit you normally get there). Filling beef is not as chunky as you'd expect, and the filling seems quite salty. Pastry was good, nicely flaky on top and the base was not too sweet or chewy. Grilled cheese and bacon chunks on the top are a nice touch, but really I expected them to be inside the pie, not outside. Jalapeno chilli pie was basically a mince/steak combo with some sliced jalapeno peppers in it, I would personally like more as I'm a real chilli head, but I think to be fair a reasonable amount of chilli for the average person. For Australia the value for money (around AU$4-5 per pie) was about as good as you're going to get there (but not by standards here). Pies are served in a box.
The chain store alternative is Pie Face. Pricing is around AU$4 per pie, they are about the same size as a decent pie shop pie in NZ and also served in a box instead of a paper bag. Pastry, slightly better than average (good flake, ok base), filling was average though. As often found here, "beef" is neither big steak chunks, nor just mince, but a combo of mince and small steak chunks. Value for money, in relation again to pies from home, was poor. I'd say they're ok in a pinch when you really miss pies and don't want something random - the chain store delivery gives a consistent pie service between stores.
One standout at both places is the ability to add peas, mash and gravy (or any variation thereof) to your pie. For those who like to float their pie or like to make a 'proper' meal out of one, this is an attractive option. This can add an extra $1.50 to your pie though.
Pics to come.

Finally got around to uploading the pic of the Yatala pie shop pie. Thinking back, I should have got a photo of every pie I ate. Oh well, there's always a next time...

I visited the Yatala pie shop a few years back,I expected greatness, I got another terrible aussie pie.
Luckily I'm still in NZ (for now) and have feasted on a couple stunning pies in the last few days.
Dads Bakery, Masterton-Steak and cheese-Full to bursting with huge chunks of awesome steak, Just when I thought there could be no more in there a few chunks of delicious steak came tumbling out to be devoured. A little light on the cheese but there was enough, Pasty was excellent, pie temp was good, meat filling perfect.
I give here a 9.6 out of 10. Nearly perfect.
The second pie was from that shitty little town north of Masterton with the plane in the center of town, Bakey was run by asians and it was late afternoon, so perfect conditions for a pie full of suck.
I selected the steak, bacon, and creamy mushroom pie.
Fuck me, so fuckin fine, chock full with delicious filling, all seeming in the perfect balance for taste. She was hot, tender, full of flavour.
10 out of 10.

Lesson: Never expect greatness from an Aussie pie.

Ah you see, I went in expecting typical aussie garbage, but got something that was slightly better than average. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they make great pies either, but if you're stuck over there and have a hankering for pie, you could do a lot worse.
In short, pies are better here, no doubt.
Still, I like to float my ones. Sometimes I take 'em home and serve it on mash & mushy peas. Don't have the option to do so over the counter here.

The Aussies in general still don't know how to make pies. You feel extra let down as they cost about twice as much over there as they do here, so they score poorly on value for money..
I can certainly vouch for that, having spent 2 weeks there working and trying to find a decent pastry covered treat. My travels took me to The suburbs of Sydney, the Legoland that is the outskirts of canberra, the ghetto of Coolangatta on the Gold Coast and a very nice place full of blond tanned chicks with huge knockers called Hervey Bay.......
Yep, any pie that I did sample was, well, crap. There are apparently good ones about but 10 days, 3 states and 12 bakeries / servos / takeaway bars later, I could not find anything that would even come close to a Countdown Makatu mincer.
So, Australians of the world rejoice but you cant make a fucking pie......

Patricks pies at Bethlehem - I think they call themselves "Pattricks Gold Star Bakery" has won the Bakels Supreme Pie awards several years in succession. Pretty sure their Creamy Bacon Mushroom and Cheese pie was the one that one the award in 2009 - well worth a stop in your travels.

For those of us living in these parts of the world the date on friday will be July 22nd.
otherwise written 22/7 which has to be a more mathmatically correct aproximation of Pi than the Americanised 3.14 (March 14th).
So by the power estd in me (by the pie shop down the road) I declare
FRIDAY PIE DAY
As for the poll that stated this thread, I challenge you to not pick one pie above all others, but try the lot.

Since this thread has revived, I ought to mention a most unusual little pie I had as part of a meal in a local cafe...
The dish was essentially an aged eye fillet, rare, with a reduced beef stock jus accompanied by some potato thingy and - the best bit - a spinach and blue cheese pie. Just a little one - individual thing.
Now on its own, I doubt it would work, but as part of the overall dish, it was sensational - set the steak off a treat. Very nice.
Available at Grace on Braid Road, The Tron.

Sounds like a bloody good idea Highlander, - perhaps all card carrying pie afficianados should submit a pic of themaelves. with pie in hand on that day....
As for myself, we left the Middle East (forever) on Tuesday and transitted thru Heathrow, during which I caught the distinct wiff of a meat pie, but alas no time to investigate, I was gutted.
In Washington DC now, so it will be a fruit pie for me!

Get yourself down to New World and buy a tin of Batchelors chip shop style. Not as good as the real thing but for a change heat them up and drop a pie on top.

Agree with Jim, ingredients mean nothing - it's all in the making.
I found the world's best chicken pie once and only once. It was a small delicatessen at Paraparaumu Beach about 7 or 8 years ago and appeared to be run by a couple of homosexual gentlemen. The next time I went back the place had closed down :shit: It had a creamy peppery semen sauce with no sign of anus cheese and a smattering of prime cooked & diced pork sword. Simply exquisite!

You want a pork pie you do. With extra lard.
I gave up making the best pork pies in New Zealand exactly five years ago so the day off tomorrow is to be spent in the kitchen for old times sake banging some herbs in the pork and hand raising the pastry. And would you believe it there is a lard shortage in Dunedin. Has Fatt Max been on a road trip this week?

Mmmmmmm, pork pies...
I hear MacDonalds is thinking of bringing back Georgie Pie (they closed them down after buying GP out). GP was a good peddler of cheap pies... Jesters pies are bloody expensive!
I used to like mnce and cheese the most, but these days, there's hardly any cheese in the MnC pies, so I just go for the Mince Pie. Must try the steak n bacon if I can find it...

I think there's some time limit on the Brand (any brand) that means if you (or Maccas) don't use it for a certain time, then it's up for grabs again.

It's a small, petty world that lets matters of such huge moment as the provenance of a good basic pie slip by unremarked for this long.
Alas, the news isn't good. On one hand I can report to have enjoyed the best pie I've ever encountered: the Ida Valley Kitchen's Beef Bourguignon pie is, quite simply the best pie ever constructed.
Tragically, the girls are about to close the door for the last time, so unless you can nip in this week you'll probably die unfulfilled.
Sigh... http://www.trademe.co.nz/property/commercial-property-for-sale/auction-595947693.htm
