View Full Version : Clown drives 400km in unsafe vehicle

Why wasn't he stopped? Fairfax want us to believe these self centred moron was a hero. He didn't have visibility, thank the stars or whatever he didn't hit a motorbike. His precious Lexus was unsafe and he was blind. He did even go straight home but detoured via Nelson!
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-earthquake/4715068/Roadtrip-from-Christchurch-in-a-lump-of-earthquake-wreckage
Where were the cops when they could have done something for road safety.
Yes I understand the quake terrified him as it did thousands of others but the others didn't believe they had the right to drive blind on NZ roads, he didn't even kick out the front windscreen so he could see where he was going.
As night fell, it began to rain, making it difficult to see cars braking on the winding roads in front of them. "When it started raining I could not put the wipers on and lights coming towards us went in all directions," Mr Vendt said
Just glad he didn't hit anything. Cry me a river, he shouldn't have been driving it. :crybaby:
In Wellington, a police officer was waiting to follow up a complaint the vehicle should not be on the road. Also sympathetic, she let the Vendts drive on to Waikanae. "She inspected the car, understood the situation." :violin:
He could have got a rental from Nelson before he got to her, could have gone direct to Picton and picked up a rental on the way. I do pity the cop though as she was on a hiding to nothing, if she had of booked him some bleeding heart would have said "how mean" but what if he had of hit someone with his lack of vision?

Good thing he didn't park it in the Wellington CBD, the parking wardens would have plastered it in tickets. Can you imagine the look on the parking wardens face on seeing it.
Take a look at it

Inaghahua. I don't blame them for being scared, their actions were wrong and not driven just by fear as they chose the long way home. Why didn't they at least kick out the windscreen.
BTW how safe would you feel with him driving towards you over the hope or spooners saddle?

I'd just lay a acomplaint with the police since they let a wreck go on its way when clearly it was a major safety issue to other road users. Especialy when the drive said he couldn't see when it was a raining.
An earthqauke is no excuss to put other peoples lives as risk.
When you have experienced what they had then come back to us and tell us what you would've done.
Other road users lives should not be put on the line for the sake of some peoples "fear"

Str8 Jacket did make me think a bit more about this action.
1/ A hero is shit scared but still does the right thing.
2/A coward is shit scared and runs like a rabbit no matter what or who is in the way.
Fairfax want us to believe this guy and his wife are some sort of heros. Which of the above two actions best describe them?
BTW Many SUV drivers put their vehicles to use transporting the injured to hospital when St Johns ran out of ambulances.

WHY the necessity to drive all the way home in that wreck?:weird:

They are only for boy racers, as he was the shirt and tie type from the photo they wouldn't dare!
It would be so funny if his insurance turned around and told him he had increased the damage to the Lexus by driving it and they were therefore only liable for half pay out

Yeah, I wonder how much longer he could get away with driving it before the cops realised he was taking the piss.
If one were to purchase this vehicle from the insurance company, would it be ok to drive on the road as is (providing rego was up to date)?

He should be disqualified from driving. What they went through gives them no excuse to add to the danger of other road users.
The article said as it began to rain, it reduced visibility through the already dismal windscreen where the wiper blades weren't working either.
If they were that traumatised - I don't think even jumping in a perfectly good vehicle and driving 400kms is a wise idea.
He should have had the book thrown at him.

But to drive that distance with no visibility...as scummy said, he should have at least kicked out the windscreen....and the cops on the way should have told him to do that too!!!

I read the title and was expecting and actual clown car, with funny paper mache and comical horn etc. Seems to be a typical attitude among too many these days, as long as I get where I want to go, I don't care who else I put at risk. Also, I've driven paddock hacks with munted windscreens, it's not too bad, so he may be overstating how bad it was to drive. either way he seems like a bit of an ass. And I would have expected better from the cops that pulled them over, it clearly isn't up to snuff, so telling them to pull in at the nearest motel is the least they could have done I reckon.

That's true .. but driving that wreck to Nelson and then Waikanae was even more dangerous than being in the earthquake ... I sincerely hope that none of us would react like that and put so many other people at risk.

What a couple of fuckwits.
Probably fair enough driving the thing to somewhere safe, although it would have been nice to stop and check if there was anyone that needed help rather than just getting in and fucking off. But carrying on to nelson for a couple of days holiday with friends and then home to the north island is just retarded.
I sincerely hope someone somewhere can find something in the law books that they can send them a summons for, seeing has they have already confessed to whatever crime is applicable.

Its a Lexus and that's a Toyota so he was only doing what Top Gear would have done, like they did with their Hi Lux. Now maybe he just needs to drop the Lexus off a tall building or something and drive it into the ocean.

I have experienced it. As have many KBers.
I understand the initial fleeing as does anyone in Christchurch. What I don't understand is many hours later after the initial panic is over, and the buggers were way out of town, why he/she did not stop and consider the possibility of them causing more deaths. FFS driving it in the rain!
Nope - after the point where they were 100's of KM's clear of Christchurch they turned into a pair of irresponsible fools. They had many options available to them that most of Christchurch City did not - they could have dumped their car in Nelson (or earlier) and got a rental, or flown out of the South Island.
I can't believe the police in Wellington letting them drive on - surely they should have escorted them to a rental car company or airport.
Pop a mono on your bike and you're in the shit.
Maybe I have a good excuse now in Christchurch to ride my bike like a dork - I'll just claim I'm still in shock.

Kicking the screen out would have ben an excellent idea!!! The risk wasn't because the vehicle doesn't appear inherently dangerous, but because the fuckwit driver couldn't see - he even admits that at night he was blinded by the staring of lights across the screen ...

Then as you well know, the story has probably been dramatised by the person writing it, wanting to sell themselves as a journo maybe and have a few easily led fools start some threads in the burn him colums of their favourite web site ... just maybe ?
Does that sort of shit have hit talleys ?
Now let me think back to when i used to ride motorcycles.... ummmm oh haha yep now i remember them times, when my visor gets all stary from old age and wiping the grime off don't seem to help no more, what do ya do ? Rip the visor off and take the chance of a bug or stone taking out an eye ? Put up with it if it ain't that bad really and it's only the last 10/15 minutes after sunset that are gonna be an issue (with being within a knats cock of my destination at sunset) with light reflection on the munted visor ?

Big difference and more mug you if you do put up with a scratched visor but at least its easy lifted if you need to check something. Also a car or SUV without a front windscreen is still rather weather tight and the rain, stones, bugs etc don't hit the driver in the face.
Oh and don't forget the 2 day stop in Nelson.

Posing with big smiles like 'hey look, life is wonderful to us' was totally insensitive and in bad taste.
So they found themselves with a working vehicle surrounded by injured and dying people and thought. Wow! These poor people. Hope someone else stops to help them. Lets go for a long drive so we can ignore the suffering.

Compared to BMW and their ilk, Lexus haven't been around long enough to have gathered such branding. Maybe because they are Japanese they never will achieve that true 'snob' branding, or maybe it's just a matter of time.

I think the vehicle would/should have been ordered off due to it being unwarrantable, the damage to the front window would be impeding the drivers vision and is over the 5 mm limit, Smith and Smith could have been called and Raji could have injected his special rasin per the telly add.
These folks did not run from bodies in the streets, they had a few bricks fall on their car, they are claiming they panicked and that lasted for the next what 3-4 days? BS.

True but the police and all the other observers of that vehicle and their behaviour by using it on the road could have corrected the situation.
As some have said they took the long road home so their panic claim doesn't ring true!
The news report did try to make them out as hero's in my opinion too!
Compared to the hysteria over how "dangerous" roadworthy motorcycles are ACC should be seen to publicly condemn these peoples unlawful actions and those of police observers who did nothing too!
