View Full Version : Did motorcycling cost him an arm and a leg?

Well it doesn't effing matter, because even if it did it's not holding him back. Makes me feel decidedly average now. Riding with one arm? So 2010. 2011 it's all about only one arm and leg.

that is amazing. He can lean a bike over further than what i can and he only has 1 arm and leg. wonder how his throttle and brake set up is.

he probably just crazy enough to wind the idle screw up to redline and not worry about the brakes. that is nuts!

Cornering to the side of the good leg must be interesting, he can't exactly grip the tank with his knees! Respect.

After the way you lot carried on about the earthquake jokes which were just generalised and some were posted by those effected, you make comments like this, oh sorry I didn't see it was a human being but he lives overseas so that doesn't matter - nice one

Provide me and the forum with evidence where I personally (guess im lumped in with ''you lot'' seen you quoted me) have made a joke pertaining to the Christchurch Earthquake and I will personally give $500 to the charity of your choice.

He's not dead though. I've only got one arm, and even without knowing about this guy I considered myself fucking lucky. The accident only took my arm, not my life. So I'm the first to make light of my situation, fuck if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at. And I bet he's the same as well, considering he's out making a go of it, I'd say he's got the right mental approach to his situation. And believe me, when people take the piss about my arm I don't give a damn, I'll carry on the joke or just remind them a one armed guy just kicked their arse.
When the jokes about the 'quake were being posted there where members here who had family trapped in buildings, and they are still waiting for the bodies to come home.

remember these posts, you seem to think its OK to make fun about a chap that has a disability but not generalised jokes about the earthquake, I just find that curious, but I guess its because the chap is not a NZer and wasn't involved in the earthquake, or perhaps you are on a different hobbyhorse at present

What an inspiration to us all aye? Found this about him on an Australian mx site (he's an Aussie btw):
"We all like to whinge about our lot and how tough we have it. Well let me introduce you to Alan Kempster, while out riding had a coming together with a truck driven by a drunk driver. Alan lost his right arm and leg in the accident, instead of feeling sorry for himself he decides water skiing would be fun and goes on to win many disabled WC and then moves on to teaches the US disabled water skiing team. Despite never water skiing before the accident. Alan then decides he wants to ride again , rigs up a LH everything and off he goes. He racing now in Formula 400 with race number 1/2.
ALAN KEMPSTER you are indeed a living legend. Me dips me lid many many times"
I too dips me lid, many times, to all those riders who despite facing personal adversity of whatever sort, still get out there and keep on riding, keep their dreams alive.

Any response to my post? I have a disability and I'm fine with cracks about my situation. People who are waiting to hear news about loved ones possibly aren't fine with that.
And to be honest, it wasn't the jokes. It was the timing.

As I don't know you I wouldn't make fun of your disability, however humour has a way of closing gaps, healing, lifting spirits and if you are ok with that, thats great.
I was not the author nor did I personally post any of the EQ jokes, but I defended the person who did post them on the grounds that the post was made in jokes and humour and clearly head EQ jokes, those that took offence seemed to target myself with their vitriol, doesn't worry me but I find it interesting that those same people will make fun of someone who has a disability, but is not personally known to them.
Personally I don't really give a rats arse about it but there you go.

There's a guy in the UK I've seen a few times at track days with no right arm. Consistently leads the fast group.... very rapid rider. Doesnt seem to affect his riding at all...I wish I was that quick.

What an Amazing Racer, that is truely Awesome to see someone like himself who has lost an arm and a leg still doing what it is he loves.
Thats dedication for you.
Fantastic to see.
I remember when l went to the Wanganui Street Races and saw a Motard Rider who was Racing with 1 arm and l thought to myself how fantastic it was that someone with only 1 arm wasn't going to let Racing a bike stop them.
Full Respect to people like that who keep on living their life the way they want to.

The guy in post #1 was racing at Eastern Creek on the weekend.
If youre impressed with that video, he got up at riders briefing & asked the guys to take it a bit easy on him because he was riding with a broken collarbone.

Not shy, no. What he has overcome physically is far greater than what I have, but I have an idea of what it's like for him. People say we're inspirational etc, but for us it's just about moving on with life. We don't do it to inspire, we do what we do to live still.
However in saying that, if people are inspired by what we do then that's great. Life can change dramatically in an instant, so enjoy what you have while you have it.
Thanks for your compliments too.

That is why you and those like you are inspirational. You have been through stuff that sitting here, safe and sound behind my (work's) keyboard I could imagine in those circumstances thinking I would have to change what I do. However people like you show it is possible to overcome and without the help and bullshit of some celeb support and promo org. :niceone:
