...starts tomorrow here in Bluff, I know, no compulsory gravel but still an adventure in my way of thinking!
Wondering if I am the only 'adv' inmate doing this? anyone know? There seems to be no mention of it this year on KB....have I missed something?
Carhnt start soon enough for me....bin in this hole since midday yesterday, with 11' and passing showers....nearly over it before it begins!!!!

Have done it a couple of times in years gone past, but not this year. Eh? no compulsory gravel, whaddabout East Cape & Cape Reinga; much of latter sealed now, izit? East Cape used to be the big in-joke due to it usually being a very long 24 hours with 40km of roughish gravel at the end, followed by a 30min walk up to the lighthouse itself... both suck if you are running late. To/from Cape Egmont via Whangamomona on a road bike was always neat. Must pencil it in for 2013 for 11 days of motorcycling pleasure.

A few years ago, 'mad dog' (from CHCH now) and myself were plotting to make it a bit more interesting by doing the Bruce carpark at Whakapapa and the Hermitage at Mt Cook, to add in the closest driveable points to the highest points on each island. 90 Mile Beach is often done, even by road bikes, but adding Waikaremoana starts to get intersting. Do you then add the Motu or go via Tolaga Bay??

The beaut thing about the Southern X is the route choice is free, make of it what you will. Have fun! :woohoo:

That sounds a lot like a fine Winter's day in Reporoa - you should be right at home.

Have a good run mate! According to the long range forecast you should have a pretty good week for it.

The Southern X is on my list to do one day. Maybe when I have a sensible touring bike.... nah... the 640'll do it.

Cheers

The 640 is a sensible touring bike.

More sensible than the touring bike I used for the last Rusty's epic I went on anyway :shit:

Clint

I seem to recall that, while having a BMW K1200R at his disposal, Jamie took the DR the last time he did the Sthn Cross and still says it was the correct choice.

Cheers Al.Different ride to this thread though. The Grand Challenge is 1000miles/1600km in 24 hours; the Southern Cross is all four compass points in a week, around 6,500km in 11 days with travel to/from start/finish. (and the GC is 2300km in 48 hours ex-wlg/akl if you don't take time off work.)

....after West Cape! Between the 'guilts' over work at the farm( seeing all the silage going in from Southland to Atiamuri = I should use this fine break to get my 40ha in?) and fatigue from the previous 5000km over the last 2 weeks touring down south with wifie, I capitulated.
Just waiting for the dew to dry and then the mower goes into the first of the 40ha soon!
My own bed and bitch was real nice! ( Neil will 'get' the bitch bit....hahaha)

Got stuck on the Southern Carpark due to that accident southbound about 7 ish.

One of the high points of a pretty ordinary day was the sight of the Southern X riders heading north for the CR checkpoint tomorrow. I counted about 20 or so, waving at the few I recognised.

Wanted to do this one again but sometimes family has to come first. Should be back for 2013 tho'.

Ride safe.

I hope there is a 2013 too. 2009, the KTM was already in the shop waiting for parts, from a ditch. 2011, I had to limp the BMW back to Auckland because of a field.

I'm going to be a bit of a nervous wreck in February 2013.

Was really looking forward to doing it too. Sucks sitting on the side line thinking about them lucky ones doing it.
Up for the Tiki tour in 2012?

Up for the Tiki tour in 2012?
It's going the wrong way, starting in the north... depending on when the TT sets dates tho. If it pans out, then yes, I'll do the Tiki tour then TT afterwards... otherwise, the TT wins, as I love the South Island roads, and most of the north island can be done in day trips or weekends :devil2:

"Mr" Okey Dokey is doing his first SX this year. As of Wed night (last contact) he was on track. He should be finished in 3-4 hours. I am so happy for him & can't wait to here about it when he gets home again :)

Almost. The Southern Cross is all four compass points in 96 hours. I've just arrived home after being away 9 days.

Well done you guys,Im sorry not to complete this, but the 5K km I did by the time I withdrew is still telling in my wrist. My motorcycling days are numbered - don't know if it is possible/practical to ride when the wrist has been 'fused' anyone have any experience of this procedure re motorcycling?
And, I am still 'plowing'(?) thru all the outstanding silage that was weighing on my mind:Oi:

Well!....Where's the bloody reports?

It seemed like slim pickin's for the TT Reports but apart from BanditRider's effort for the SX, I've seen nothing.

still no sign or word from PB Tech on the GPS
still no SX reports to read (although Toto’s tardiness offered a small respite last night)
the end of financial year is barrelling down with much to do and so little time
I couldn’t ride on the weekend because I was home alone…(with the moko’ doing my koroly duties)
……I think I need a jolly good fang….if I only had time, only time!

The Uly AGM is this weekend….maybe I’ll win a new bike. That would be nice. I’d have to run it in….and loosen it up before the GC! The economy on the current bike kept improving so it didn’t really loosen up until about 70,000Km.
Mmmmmm....... there are roads that I’d ride, if I’d time.

I knew I should have done the Southern Cross. Then I’d really be in the shit for time, but at least I wouldn’t be going stir crazy…..

Mmmmmmmm…..If I only had time, only time…..(and a shitload of cash)
