View Full Version : Most desirable Harley Davidson?

Okay..before I get flamed with "WTF is this sort of question...??",..there is a method to my madness.
I'm going to do a CNC machined clock from my PC with a CAD programme of a H-D Cruiser to be raffled out as a fund-raiser for my fellow Cantabrians. Probably donate it to the Brotherhood guys to handle.
Started doing a Fat-Boy then asked myself, "is this the best Harley to be doing?"
I'm not right up with Harleys as such and thought there would be others who could help me here.
(showing a pic of an 1198 here that I've done previously for reference, may even get another machined to be raffled off also).
Any opinions appreciated..Scumdog, Crasher..??

What kinda cost is usually associated with that kinda work?
A Street Triple clock for the garage could be in order if the proceeds are heading for Chch.

An early Dyna-glide, like a 1971 FX Superglide (aka 'disc-glide') would be my choice, has the red/white/blue paint and duck-tail rear fender.
(Bbut I'm biased!)

Usually sell them around $300-350 mark. They're anodised and black line infilled.
Thanks Scumdog..def worthy of consideration.

I thought all XRs had a reversed rear cylinder head so the induction could be on the right and exhaust on the left? I could be wrong and likely am but that looks to have a streetbike motor in it to my untrained eye*.
XRs got two front cylinder heads so they could have dual carbs, among other things. Part of the AMA opening up competition to any 750 regardless of where the valves were (or even no valves at all). Previously the 750s were side valve to the 500s overhead valve.
The first XRs were basically a short stroke 883 Sportster with iron heads and barrels and overheated badly, later XRs got alloy heads and barrels and became very successful on the dirt, less so on the pavement.

Shell Thuet was building Kenny's bikes, they were 750,and even with a special one off head they were hard pressed to catch the XR's on a mile.Kel Caruthers built the TZ750 just for the last race of the season,it was win or lose for Kenny. One of the most famous rides in history.Hard to ride at the time, but unsorted and on Pirelli MT53 tyres, these days with 30 years to sort it and on K180 tyres, even an old man can ride it....if that old man is Kenny Roberts.Multi cyl bikes were banned after that,a good thing at the time because a multi is very hard to control sideways at 160kph on a loose surface.
The narrow crank V twin has advantages on the dirt track, and until Honda built a 45 degree aircooled dry sump V twin with the same bore and stroke as the XR750 no bike could really get near it.Now a Ninja 650 can beat them on the Mile....but built by the best XR750 tuner there has ever been.

I thought all XRs had a reversed rear cylinder head so the induction could be on the right and exhaust on the left? I could be wrong and likely am but that looks to have a streetbike motor in it to my untrained eye*
*and mods, thats why I quoted the picture, because if I didnt that comment is completely pointless. Just so you know.
that was one of the earlier XR750 before they started playing around with twin carbs

You mean the Captain America bike from Easy Rider?
He didn't create that Ben Hardy did

Much as it saddens me to say, that is actually far less gay than it could have been. Testament to what cn be done with a little thought and a modest budget. Shame there aren't more of the same sorts of things running around.

Alrighties...
CAD completed on the XR750....been a bit slow lately on it due to other commitments.
Normally I would do a lot more detail in ones I've made in the past but I have 2-3 others to do yet and it all takes time.
This file will now get sent down south for machining out in 3mm alloy anodised silver and sent back to me for an anologue clock to be fitted.

An early Dyna-glide, like a 1971 FX Superglide (aka 'disc-glide') would be my choice, has the red/white/blue paint and duck-tail rear fender.
(Bbut I'm biased!)

Unfort my person I use to get them machined lives in ChCh and some of his equipment was wrecked.
But seems to be okay now so I'm working on getting one or two completed for the Wgtn Toy Run in December.
