My dilemma
My Band new bike I bought a x-mas ,was back at shop about 10 day after i bought it for warranty work, it has been there since early jan, now quake has been through its stuck in a Yellow Stickered building that could be red stickered at any stage , with aftershock etc and further inspection may mean nothing comes out and get demolished with everything inside.
This would be fine if i had insured it , but i hadn't.
As i hadn't had the chance to use it, so i was not insuring it till i got it back, ( no point insuring it while sitting around in pieces i thought ) this be very wrong now. i find out, I'm fucked if this happens . I kiss goodbye 18k.
i can’t upgrade the insurance it has to cover it fully now , as i rolled over another bikes 3rd party to it b4 i took it in the shop. There insurance will not cover it as it’s an act of god, not something in there control. act of nature.
I cant get it covered till its back in my possession (not sitting at shop) even though i can prove it not damaged (yet ) it was was worth a try
I'm sure this is not the only bike in this situation.

I really feel for these guys & other businesses in the CBD.
regarding the yellow stickers, it's my understanding that you can access these buildings to remove property, you just can't live in or work in them. Red stickers are the only ones you cannot access.

Isn't it yellow stickered from the original quake and now needs to be reassessed before anyone can do anything?

Yeah I'm a builder and my van is in the Lichfield street carpark along with all my tools. It would be so easy to move the cordon 100metres up the road beyond the carpark entrance. There are no highrises near the carpark and the carpark appears to be fine but trying to ring the council and other authorities is hopeless as they don't have any information. I thought I had plenty of insurance with both my van and builders indemnity insurance but the insurance company want proof the van and tools are damaged before opening their wallets. Damn another decent sized earthquake just hit. Not as big as last nights but still enough to get the hairs on the neck sticking up.

The shops insurance should cover it fine. The whole insurance not covering act of god thing is completely false. One of those dumb ideas perpetuated by Hollywood that people think is true.
Most insurance policies cover loss in one of two ways, either by accidental loss unless specifically excluded, or by specified loss.
The first kind is the most common, it basically says you're covered for loss that is accidental to you (you didn't cause the loss on purpose) unless the policy specifically excludes the type of loss. Exclusions being things like acts of terrorism, loss occuring during breaking the law and stuff like that. An earthquake causing loss is accidental to the insured as they didn't cause it on purpose. So unless the shop has a very specific policy stating that quake loss isn't covered then you're golden.
The second kind of policy is the usual catastrophy cover; fire, flood theft & natural disaster are the usual things these policies cover. Very few policies exclude natural disaster loss.
Call the shop, ask them about their insurance cover, if they're not sure ask who their broker or underwriter (insurance co) is and call them directly to enquire.

let's hope Imdying says your bike is fucked because he's wrong most of the time about most things, and when he said mine was gone for good that was the best news I'd heard all week.
Seriously, if your bike is in a yellow stickered building the odds are good you'll get it back sooner or later, and BMW would have full insurance, so even if it's fucked their insurance will pay out. It's a pain in the arse, but you'll get it out. DOn't whatever you do try and get it out yourself because the constabulary will have your nuts in a nano second.

The reality is that I'm happy for you, and quite stoked that you got your bike back from what has been quite rightly described as 'munted' or a 'warzone'. But if that was to happen, it was always going to have happened in good time. Basically, your bike being trapped was a minor thing of little concern to anyone but yourself.

Thanks mate, once I got the word that it was safe I was kind of relaxed about getting it as and when I could, but was mighty pleased when I got a call from a guy asking if I'd like him to get it out for me. A complete stranger and not even a biker, but he said he realised looking at it that it was something a little special and quite obviously someone's pride and joy.
I think that's one of the things that has amazed me about this, the way complete strangers want to help each other out and it seems everyone who can wants to do something.

Do the dead worry about things like that? Thought that would be the missing :innocent:
Nothing is black and white, its all multi-coloured. Worrying about the dead and people recovering property can be done at the same time in different places/circumstances.
The crack about the dead just belittles a real and personal concern but is actually irrelevant to that concern. It is a cheap grab at the moral high-ground.
It is a shame about the dead, we may morn with those that loved them. However life goes on and why should life be made harder by having the bike at risk when it could so easily be rescued?

Ah wisdom from Auckland. Which part of National Disaster was not clear?
It is tough until they allow you in. Bloody unfortunate but the area is closed off for a reason and one bike is not a priority to the workers within that area. Unless you can get escorted in there you will have to wait with the other businesses and vehicle owners.

Of course the better question is, why is a brand new BMW motorbike (what with their reputation for Teutonic reliablility, andbeing designed by Ze Chermans and all) doing in for warranty work month after month? Has chasing and beating the Japanese at their own game in every market segment they enter had a detrimental effect on the reliability of the marque? Enquiring minds....

My understanding is that the zones that were opened for a small period where to enable people to get cars and businesses to retrieve important items. All while under the supervision of specialised personal. So not a general walk through.

That's a VERY good question.
We've got excellent coverage and I'm waiting to find out that question on our policy RE earthquake cover.....whose insurance should cover it?
Completely agree.....If a customer's bike is damaged in my shop by something we did, we cover it always....earthquake? waiting to find out.....whether best under our cover(if covered) or theirs.....I'm sure we'll find a way thru.
We just gained access today.....for 30 minutes.....only after waiting 3 days at the Art Museum HQ.
The CD/CCC folks are doing their best, but there's room for improvement on every side in getting business jumpstarted again.
So we are starting to operate offsite until we achieve some clarity.....quite nebulous and opaque at the moment for our patch.....do we stay on Manchester St. or do we shift to inner suburbs? Not sure yet.

Correct...Zones 1 + 2 are open-ish
Zones 3 + 4 will be opening shortly
Red Zone.....TBD...limited escorted access only...even though I was there on the Tuesday Night with USAR, back with USAR again a few days later to gain entry for a few minutes....today it was like we were defusing a bomb to enter......VERY safety conscious.....as am I, but the approach is one of extreme caution.
It's going to be slow going unless they allow a bit more latitude in terms of people allowed to take personal responsibility for their own actions with their own property.

You mean the 100 odd families who at the time were worried whether they'd ever seen their loved ones again? Yeah fuck 'em and their faux problems.
Most people in this town have problems and losses of some form and of differing severity. Saying "there are people worse off than you, so suck it up; your failing business, shattered home, lost motorcycle, wet stamp collection, distressed cat don't matter". I didn't want to lose my bike and was keen to find out if I could get it out because (a) it's my main form of transport, (b) is something I have invested a lot of time and effort personalising it and getting it the way I like it and (c) it's my bike and a bike is more than just a possession (to some people). My car, fridge, washing machine and BBQ I really don't care about; but to me a bike is a different category of thing.
And if getting my bike out would cause any risk to anyone, interfere with rescuing anyone or cause emotional pain to anyone who has lost a loved one, then I would be delighted for iit to stay where it was; but it didn't. The only people working in that area now are demolition workers, so they're probably quite glad that there is one less thing to worry about/move/bulldoze.
As for the OP - I can fully understand not insuring his bike while it's unrideable - if the bike is sitting in a workshop not being ridden on the Queen's highways it (normally) faces few risks, so why insure it against Mary Pajero hitting it or overcooking a corner? he had just bought a new bike, and that's a pretty cool thing to do. My guess is he's hanging out for a ride, and has been for a while. The thought that his dream toy is likely to end up under a pile of rubble must really rankle. He's probably saved for a long time for that bike and more than likely didn't sleep a lot the night before he picked it up.
Personally I really hope he gets it out.

That's cool for you. My bike is my pride and joy, which has been extensively personalised, and is entirely unique and represents thousands of dollars in mods and improvements and hundreds of hours, but I wouldn't have given two hoots about it's condition while I knew they were still trying to rescue people from a collapsed building next door.

What if the building had been 2 blocks away? Or 2 kms away? And they stopped rescuing people nearly 2 weeks ago.

On behalf of myself and the guys I worked with and supported during the first two weeks......something like getting a beautiful bike to safety or into it's owner's hands without a scratch amidst such chaos during brief breaks is a REAL morale booster.
On my last shift I brought a 2011 Fatboy into the cordon for use as a "messenger bike". It served a valid purpose for one last shift in looking after the guys on and in the cordon...and acted as a bit of a morale booster.
To be honest...seeing someone get something of value out......whether it be tangible or intangible ....made the days go by a bit faster and better.
People took absolute priority and if that bike was in the way it would have been f'n flattened.....fortunately it wasn't....and I'm sure gave the guys inside a little lift and a small win during an infrequent break.
Saving lives is impossible to beat, but saving something beautiful still counts as one in the "W" column

But it wasn't two blocks away, nor 2km away, nor had they stopped rescuing people. I'm not referring to any other scenario here than the one your bike was in. Otherwise we could debate an infinite number of possibilities.

So that explains some of the aftershocks then!!!!! :shit:
Nah just kidding - it would have been rather surreal seeing a new bike cruising around the rubble.

And bloody ell mate - $18k bike in Christchurch and no insurance! Were you out of town in September & Boxing Day and late January and any of the thousands of significant aftershocks in between!
said it in first post , has 3rd party , i had a quote for it full and was shopping around as it was double what i was paying for my aprillia, at same value and 1/2 the cc . and was going to finalising it when it returns back from warranty work.
I had the option to go in today but i had no way into the building, the red zone opens up on monday , so tues ill try to obtain it , and hope for no more big after shocks over the weekend , to red sticker the old buildings behind the old lonestar where it is.
Yes it just a bike, and falls on fuck all importance to what's happened, and others have lost,
But on a single income family with kids i wont bounce back from a big financial loss if i loose it, i had sold 3 other bike i had to buy it, and was going to be the bike i was to keep till my kids are of age , hence buying a BMW.

Of course recovering a bike is less important than saving people, but at no point did getting my bike out have the slightest impact on saving people or even recovering the dead - in fact getting another obstacle out of the way of USAR workers and vehicles may even have made things easier.

The day of the September earthquake I was to pick up a new bike I'd paid for on the Friday. Street and Sport kept in touch the entire time and finally called me on the Thursday saying "get here within the hour". Probably the strangest handover they'd ever done (until Feb).
I'm sure you'll get looked after.

Yep, boosting morale is a really important thing these days. The guy who got my bike out said it was awesome to be able to do something positive and help someone out because it made a change from dealing with loss and devastation. Your Fatboy would have given a grin to guys that haven't had a lot to smile about.

There has been a very effective clean-up of the abandoned cars on the city's streets, but this won't include vehicles inside of businesses that are still yellow or red stickered.

I've literally seen truck loads of them over the past couple days - a sad looking bunch of cars too - roofs crushed into the floors in some cases.

Yeah mate, all good. One of the emergency workers saw it and recognised it was a little special so rode it out for me. He's a complete stranger, not a biker (I had to talk him through starting it!) and has refused to accept even a beer in return.

Only one bike....you were lucky (Think Monty python and the 4 welshmen)
I share your pain, my bikes are stored at Casbolts and I pick them up when I return to NZ for a holiday 3 weeks 2 or 3 time a year...I arrived in Chch 2 days after the quake and only got to see 2 of the 3 bikes as I was heading to the airport to fly back here.
However I was booked in to do the TT2000 and was not going to miss out on that....so a quick call to Te Waiponamu rentals and I had a VFR 800 arranged for 3 days rental :woohoo:(and 4000km)....I think I may have set some rental bike record....
All three of my bikes in Casbolts fell over and were damaged to some degree.:crybaby:
Some good news however...a couple of days before the quake, I checked that the insurances were paid up and up to date, and recieved acknowledment that the insurance was all good...the morning of the quake...Talk about timing
Claims were lodged with Kiwibike insurance who promptly responded advising the claims were accepted...If the insurance was the shops responsibility, I expect my insurance co would have advised me to approach the shop for cover.
Kiwibike Insurance have been very good and prompt and without going into details, have been more generous than I would have expected from an insurance company.:gob:
Next trip home is July...maybe I will get to see and ride my new MTS that trip home.
Now....lets see how long it takes to get a new 1098S tricolore fairing.......:corn:

I was in town on Saturday, and the cordon has been moved north from Manchester/Moorhouse intersection, up to Cokers and next to Street and Sport. So Street and Sport are still in the cordon.
But Rolling Thunder, Casbolts, and what was Sportzone Suzuki are not. Chris and the boys were in RT, it looks fine, and doesnt seem to have copped liquefaction or structural damage.
Acorn Models had people in it too.
The piece of shit building (where MDU was) next to Street and Sport and Pitlane appears to have totally fallen down. Presumably they just need to clear the site (Civil Defence should do it and send the fucktard owner the bill: they have the power to) and Street and Sport and Pitlane can open.
A lot of the buildings have signs in "no power on" so presumably the services are down.
My favourite bike shop (Cycle Trading) is utterly fucked: the front's fallen off it. Hopefully Keith got some of his cool old bikes out.

Talking to Don before the 22nd and he reckoned the owner of the offending building owner had no insurance, hence his unwillingness to bowl the bloody thing. I hope Don gets back in business, but I wonder whether he or Street and Sport will be able to weather this storm. I understand Street and Sport were right on a knife edge and Glenn has had enough.
