I'm sure I read somewhere that there is a 7+ earthquake somewhere in the world about every 5 days. Most of them of course are under the oceans or so deep underground that they don't have an effect on the surface or they happen in uninhabited places. Makes earthquake prediction a bit like saying "there is a high probability that there will be a Friday this week".

Who cares if they (any of them) got it right as long as they keep trying they might eventually crack it!

If they all followed the same path and missed something vital they will definitely miss the boat, so I'm still open to even crackpot suggestions at least being looked at!

So far not many of the so called experts are making any headway on this subject but good on them for trying!

Earthquakes are something that you can't predict... but my guess is if the moon and its gravitational pull effects tides and such then it is possible that a side a effect of this extra gravatational pull could cause increased EQ's... but you would not be able to predict where and or what fault line... maybe only when as the moon is closer etc...

dunno... ???

No reports of any damage or injuries so far. I'm sure you all checked that out thoroughly before you laughed it up big. Especially with all the Japanese have done to help out in NZ recently.

I will go as far as saying that the moon MAY have a 'straw that broke the camel's back' effect on faults that are about to go anyway and just need that little tiny push to send them over the edge. If not the moon today then the first worm that farts tomorrow will do it. That's way different to causing earthquakes.

This phenomenon has reportedly heightened concerns about 'supermoons' being linked to extreme weather events - such as earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. The last time the moon passed close to the Earth was on 10 January 2005, around the time of the Indonesian earthquake that measured 9.0 on the Richter scale. Lol, you see the news doesn't usually report that many. But right now because NZ'ers are all hyped up on Earthquakes it's taking advantage by putting on any report to do with an earthquake, because that's what's on everyones minds.

And as our population increases at an alarming rate due to having no natural predators left and vaccines etc curing more and more ailments even more people will be killed due to 'natural disasters'. It's just nature doing it's job, keeping things in check.

I agree with the population increase leading to more people dying in natural disasters cos there's more people in an affected area so more people to die. However, I'm not sure I can believe that it's "nature's way" of population control due to man's ability to avoid dying in other ways

I'm not 'personifying' nature, I'm just saying that we can't ultimately beat it. If disease etc had kept our numbers in check then there would be less need for people to live in riskier areas. However we have defeated a lot of diseases etc so as our population has increased more people are moving to those more at prone areas, ending up in increased deaths. Either way, the planet we live on has the final say.

I see tonight that Japan has just been hit with a 8.8 earthquake, buildings still swaying 30mins after the shake. A 4m tsunarmi sent buildings, cars floating away.

Also China has been hit as well. Seems like the 'ring of fire' is warming up.

I'm not surprised the buildings were still swaying, look at the size of the after shocks (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php)... thoughts with the Japanese

You could tell how used to shakes the Japanese are by the way they reacted on some of the TV shots. Hiding under tables? No. Holding onto the computers to stop them hitting the floor! Even saw one guy carrying on pecking away at his keyboard through the shake.

As an aside, Nick Smith MP is having lunch with the Skeptics Society on March 20th, in Christchurchs highest, oldest stone building. Scientists will also be attending in the hope of strongly discrediting Ken Rings theories.

I've just read that one (http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/9001406/sceptics-reject-new-quake-prediction/)... now if there was ever a reason to want a Ring prediction to come true :innocent: (the second comment in the comments section, oddly enough, GOLD!). As a sidebar, i know it won't happen, the Wizard of Christchurch was in the same place as myself and family yesterday and assures us that it won't happen because he's cast a spell. Wonder what shrub's PJ has to say about that :)

If by some crazy coincidence it does happen, I wonder if he will charge an appropriate levy on the skeptic's membership fees?

Personally I think Ken Ring's prediction of an earthquake is no less likely than Nick Smith's prediction that I will have a serious harm injury on my motorcycle. The difference is Smith gets to enact the law.

But, if that's true, it would mean that "they" already know how to predict earthquakes? Why wouldn't "they" tell anyone that they could? Oh yeah, because people would panic... perhaps if "they" told us in the first place, then "we" would actually get used to the idea (earthquakes being unstoppable and all ), and we'd be better prepared and life would go on as normally as possible. Shows what "they" think of "us"!!!!!!!!!!!!! if of course "they" can predict earthquakes...

Dead right - biologically we've overloaded the world with faulty people.

All the fancy vacines, drugs and safety measures has allowed stupid diseased and geneticly (sp) defective people to be part of the population.

Here's a another fruitcake like Ring http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Berkland

Interviewed on Fox News, Berkland predicted an earthquake for sometime between March 19 and March 26 2011. He cited telling factors including the highest tides in 18 years, and the proximity of the moon, suggesting that the quake will most likely strike on Saturday March 19 2011. [4]

Just like Ring he failed to predict the Japanese one
