View Full Version : You should be required to wear more than just a helmet...

why is it only required to wear a helmet when riding? If ACC were so concerned about us hurting ourselves, then why can you ride round on a R1 with shorts jandels and a helmet on?
SURELY there should be some sort of requirement to wear protective gear more than a helmet anyway.... I mean it's similer to sitting on the roof of a car driving down the motorway.
Or at least you could choose a option where you ride in proper motorcycle attire, then you pay less? But if you get pulled over and your reg states you should and your not... then you get fined...
I dunno endless arguement i guess, like i always thought if you crash your car/bike whilst pissed then fuck you, you aint getting any acc or special medical shit, the government will keep you alive like it humanitarily has to do, but at the end of the day, you fucked up =, why should we all have to pay extra for that?

Right, so make gear mandatory. This gear must be defined and must meet a particular NZ standard. Who decides the standard? The government? ACC?
Who pays for the committee who decides the standard? Tax? ACC?
Who checks that the gear remains up to standard? WOF testers? ACC? Government officials?
Man, I've got deja vu today

As you pointed out, you only need a helmet to ride, the law also states that you have to cover your dangly bits if your a male, females don't even have to do that:woohoo:
you can choose the option of wearing 'proper motorcycle attire'.... the question is, what is it?
A full leather suit on an R1 makes some kind of sense, but to a farmer riding his bike around it makes no sense @ all. The girl riding her scooter to work in the city has little need for a full leather suit either.:scooter:
What would happen if we suddenly had to comply with yet another compulsory regulation from those that would try to protect us from ourselves??? We live in a nanny state now, don't make it worse by telling others what they should be wearing to ride. If someone wants to nip up the shop on his R1 in a helmet & thong then let them,I'll be the first to laugh when they fall off & have road rash:yes:

The law that states that leaving your dangly bits to wave in the breeze is indecent exposure . As wimmin don't have said dangly bits (well most anyway) they can ride totally naked apart from the helmet:sunny:

ohh good idea & why their legislating what gear to wear they can also legislate all bikes must be fitted with no-less than 4 wheels, a steel "cage", seatbelts, crumple zones to protect the occupants, & hell why we're at it well throw in a requirement for airbags, side intrusion bars, & anti-roll bars too

Yes, this is turning into a big fuckin nanny police nation, like most of the rest of the world. Sure you should be able to ride without protective gear, but fuck why cant you ride without a helmet then?
Just if you come of and smash your face on the curb, then tough luck. Hope your titanium oakleys gave your face enough protection. But why should we have to pay super high levies for fuckwits that decide to not use common sense, and come off their bikes leaving a 100meter trail of meaty gayness leading up to a crashed bike?

Fair question and one I have asked many times, usually after seeing some fat bastard riding in jandals.
Once I saw a photograph of a motorcyclist who had been wearing jandals and had a crash, the part of the jandal that goes between his toes was lodged in his ankle - split his foot apart when he hit the deck when the jandal stopped but the foot kept going forward at 100 or so!
Oh bla bla bla free choice bla bla argument.
The thing is ACC also pays out for the utterly stupid - if you are dirty dancing on your desk at work and the desk collapses and you get hurt then ACC will pay.
So basically if you are stupid enough not to wear any form of protective gear other then the legal requirement then ACC will cover you and probably add it to the motorcycle statistics so they may charge more on our collective regos.
Also consider cars - does ACC still pay out if you crash and are NOT wearing a seat belt? IMO they should not.
But even if you are wearing one you can be naked with a newspaper over your dick parked outside a school and have a truck run up the back of your car and ACC will cover your injuries.
And if they made some form of clothing compulsory in cars then you'll never get to see another mini-skirted young lady bending over getting her handbag from the passenger seat again.
Just what the fuck was my point? I lost myself at miniskirt .......

In most states in the United States of America, the only mandatory apparel is eye protection. Exposure of genitalia is subject to laws that apply to all members of the population, whether riding motorcycles or not.
While that is not how I choose to ride I accept that others have different values.

2) you are making sensible suggestions on KB.

I am continuously amased how some people find it so hard to grasp the basic principles of ACC. It exists to:
1. Ensure that people return to as great a level of productivity as possible as soon as possible after an accident.
2. Leave the courts to deal with their primary function - crimes.
3. Preserve freedom of thought. Hence the "NO FAULT" policy.
ACC benefits everybody, whether you're prone to accidents or not. Therefore we all should bare an equitable share of the cost. It is a public good.
Remember also that the levies that are currently being charge are artificially inflated.
The fact that even a helmet is compulsary sticks in my craw. Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY, has the right to protect me from myself. My head, my body, my decision! End of story.

I disagree with all the comments made.
ACC has no increased due to people wearing the wrong gear. It has increased due to them surviving crashes these days.
Now if we made helmets non-compulsory. The ACC levy would decrease and gene pool would get a bit brighter.
All your going to do by making ATGATT compulsory is make our ACC levy worse and bubble wrap morons so they live/ride longer. I would rather they just learnt the lesson or died.
