Went to order some tyres today for the DR. Had decided on some Pirelli MT21's. Guess what, no stock, front or rear:angry: Ok, how about some Michelin T63"s, guess what, no stock. See a pattern forming. Apart from Mitas (I havent checked on stock) the only tyres available are Dunlop 606's. General concensus is they're bloody noisy on the road. Howl like a Beemer rider getting his monthly account !!
Anyone tried a Mitas E09 front. ?

I am running an E09 on the rear and an E10 on the front. From what I have been told the 21" E10 has a stiffer casing sides than the the 21" E09 and is the better option for bigger bikes and/or fully laden bikes.

I have utmost confidence in them on-road (fully laden), and as for off-road they are absolutely superb. I have just come off E07's, they are a great dry terrain tyre but the EO9/E10 set has just as much grip on-road and is leagues ahead of the E07 off-road on greasy tracks, mud, slippery rocks, steep hill climbs, and general gnarly stuff

A fresh E09 on the rear for this trip last weekend (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/77/3-day-rainbow.php?admin=sing-art-access-8286765-1123)which had a wide range of terrain over 900km and it performed faultlessly

I use DAS (http://dasmoto.co.nz/), Linton has a good knowledge base on the tyres plus a lot of feedback from guys on light adv/enduro bikes right through to big beemers, and freights NZ wide

Solo or 2-up?

Solo, Kenda 760 rear and something knobby on the front.
Less than $200 all up.

I just got some cheapie tyres for the TT yesterday.
KiwiX front with some reinforcing at the base of the side knobs and an Innova rear for $130.
Thought I'd go cheap to see how I liked knotholes for general use before getting better ones.

I too was going to order a set of E09s for my DR650. Ordered through Red Baron in Auckland, they had a 130 rear on the shelf but bo fronts and importer has no stock front or rear. Rang the importer and he has had a container go missing in Singapore so right before an event he is sponsoring - no tyres. If you can find a front the rear might still be at Red Baron. I broke out the credit card and ordered a pair of TKC80s from AJ at Motohaus who offers a good price 09 815 8384.

E09's howl nearly as bad as D606's
take the baffle out of your muffler as it eliminates the howling

D606 front and E07 rear is my personal favourite combo on the klr. E07 is great in everything but mud & wet grass.

E07 rear lasts 7000k E09 rear last 5000k D606 rear lasts 3000k (all one up on KLR)

As Vale Rossi is quoted as saying - " put a goot tyre you trust on the FRONT and something round and black on the back" !

I'm a fan of the Dunlop D606 front too. I reckon the Pirelli MT21 howels worst of all I've used.
Man you must be rough on your tyres, my E07 rears go 16000km at least, but my E09s go about the same as yours.

Wow. You must be the Michelin Man or something.
I've never noticed an MT21 font howling at all?

E-09's on the rear rock, I'd get 7000km out of one on the PD. I've heard stories that they aren't much good on the front though.

There may be a reason he's loaned it to you.
Does he carry a camera perchance?

I found these disappointing - tread depth when new appeared less than a comparable Pirelli MT21 or the popular D606. Found the E09 front didn't offer sufficient 'bite' in gravel for me - washed out very easily

As others have said - hard to beat the E07 rear in all conditions cept mud and wet grass - if I new it was going to remain dry I'd be leaving my worn E07 rear on for the Pukemanu will prolly replace with a used E09 I have

Cheers Aslan

Totally agree. 606 front & E07 rear are my all time best. I've got a tyre on the rear (can't remember what it is but E09 like) of the KLR & is superb for knarlyoff road stuff.
