I want the cheapest internet connection package I can find. Currently, I am with Telecom. Dial up. about 29.95 a month for internet, plus home phone around $40 a month. I hardly use my landline for calls so, all up its about $70 a month.

I want to know about a cheaper option!! with any ISP.

If you pay less than me for internet. Please let me know, who are you with?

Then you can look at the naked DSL options from the likes of Sling Shot and World Xchange.
How important is helpdesk support or are you happy with the KB helpdesk support option (although this doesn't work when your interweb is down) ?
How much data you looking the shift, if you are still on dial-up I guess not a lot but this could be the reason you are looking to change.

I use my internet for emails/browsin websites like Kb facebook and the like. Dont really download movies and other large files. went off the internet porn after picking up a virus lol
so really, I dont download alot at all. The only reason I like dial up is because its unlimited and I can stay on as long as I like.

but there's another point, do they tie in with a cell plan and what cell comp do you use? Hope you didn't think this was going to be easy :nono:
they (Telcos/ISPs) don't do straight pricing as that would make comparison too easy for the public.

vodafone ISP business is seperate from cellphones

naked options wont necessarily be cheaper but you should get better internet service for the same money (assuming you dont want a landline)

Orcon could be worth a look

Try a vodafone or 2degrees prepay mobile broadband, top it up as you need it, they start with either 2 or 3 gigs included.

All ADSL plans require you to have a landline except the "naked" deals.

ADSL is just another name for broadband. The term Naked DSL means you don't have to have the landline part. Telecom are wankers for not offering naked DSL

I'll probably look to move to slingshot then once my telecom contract finishes unless vodafone does me a better deal - I have mobile with voda

DSL = digital subscriber line
ADSL = Asymmetric DSL which basically means you can download faster than upload.

I had one in a tractor once. Was good.
How fast will my Mass Feg go with this ADSL?

But even so you usually only save 10$ buy going naked & for me the 10$ isn't enough to make me want to be without a phone line (especially with all these earthquakes & the world ending next year )

Vodafone naked DSL is much cheaper if you have a Vodafone on account cell plan, and put both on the same bill. There is a big bundling discount. That's what I have.

as you are in glenfield, try out orcon - they have there own network in glenfield so SHOULD be more reliable than telecon.

Telescum are terrible, they are always screwing things up and are very slow.

word of warning, youtube eats a lot of bandwith, you could easily blow the best chunk of 10gig in a few solid hours of youtube. (ask my friend who was watching heaps on his phone..!)

Yep orcon in Glenfield is pretty good, no issues over the 2 years we had it, to be fair though slingshot and Xtra/telecom were equally good (within 10% of our orcon speeds too). We would be happy to stick with any of them, only reason we change is related to employment.

Have a go at Compassnet. Get the wireless setup. that's what i got and it gives me phone and fast as internet speed for around $69 a month. No need for phone lines.
Need to be inline with the towers though. worth checking it out.

Best advice in the thread so far, if you are a low volume user. 2 degrees also has great customer service.

Mine was $90 preloaded with 1G but I saw them on special for $69 with 2G I think.
Major city data is $20/1G, lasts 30 days. Outside of the three big cities it's $6/50MB - q bit pricey.

That's interesting to know. I'll look at it again later in the year when my contract ends. I was under the impression that 2 Degrees was better for calls and txting but shite for data. Is it really slow? 2 degrees still isn't 3G is it?

It's pretty fast, although I haven't done a speed test or anything, and I'm usually just checking email/doing some basic browsing or ssh/ftp. Usually get a HDSPA connection, and good coverage.

I heard that some of the ISPs are trying to block bittorrent clients from being used with their services. Just as well Telstra ain't in on it. For now.

the 2 degrees 3gb for $50, lasts for 90 days, no other charges

i tether my mobile to my laptop and use it as a modem

a bit slowish but still wireless broadband

easy to move your address with no penalty or obstacle

can take it almost anywhere that has coverage

This isn't relevant, exactly, for your query, but I offer it up for comparisons sake. Also, others may be interested in what a non-city dweller has chosen. I am with paradise, independent of my landline. Dial-up to a maximum 150 hours for $15 per month.

My only option for broadband is to install a satellite dish and pay $60 per month. So I am happy on my slow cheap one, but can't do youtube and stuff because of dial-up speed.

No cell phone coverage here, either. How the other half lives :)

How much does your 3Gb last you? presumably you would use it all up within the 90 days?

If I dont watch video it easily lasts for 2 months (my bad its actually 60 days not 90 days as I first thought).
http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/prepay/mobilebroadband

I can also use my phone to connect to the net, as well as my laptop. As well, he phone works as a modem, so you dont need to buy a vodem thingy.

Because I'm all set up mobile, i can take my phone and or laptop to mcdonalds and use their free broadband
